Yes, and? That would not change the fact that there’s no way they could have released all results prior to all 20,000+ HS in the US going on break.
thy don’t care about anyone’s break - that’s my point
Yes but you seem to be complaining about this fact.
you seem to misunderstand how my clearly poor attempt to console previous posters that the school would actually take ones feelings into consideration with regard to potentially timing decision release with spring break timing.
Agreed.
There is no debate on these sites. Answer /counter and move on… Unless I do it …
I would be shocked if it came out this Friday. I will hold on that it will come out on the 3/29. It’s a holiday weekend and won’t have to take the calls from parents wanting to know why their kid didn’t get accepted. With close to 98,000 applications, might as well flip a coin if your getting in. Your all qualified and worth the acceptance. But if they are doing their normal things each app gets 3 looks. Not every school goes into this detail on each applicant. But historically, the students that land there are great kids that are academically inclined to take on the work. I say this often. Michigan is a very difficult school for the best students. Use every resource they have (they have a ton), until you don’t need it anymore. Some of the best students I know there currently use most of the resources
They feel it keeps them on top of their game.
It’s almost here. There should of been some server maintenence by now anyway. That should happen like next Monday or Tuesday. Unless, I am completely wrong
I’m just using round numbers here. The specifics are located within the CDS.
Anyway, I just wanted to point out that UMich historically has offered the waitlist to roughly 20,000 applicants, which is ALOT. And roughly 15,000 accept their place on the WL. Yes, that’s crazy.
And typically less than a 100 +/- are offered enrollment from that WL. I only mention it, because the wait may be much longer for some of you.
If you’re offered a WL position, then I’d treat it almost like a lottery ticket.
Best of luck everyone.
Last year actually 27000 - that’s almost Case Western like
18.3K on and 5% got off.
That’s obviously way more WL spots than they will ever need. Is it done more as a soft rejection? Nicer to offer students a WL position they will never fill vs a rejection?
Well when I explain it as a top public in the mid-Atlantic explained it to my daughter, people here get offended.
But they explained that they are not able to accept you. You can interpret that as you want - but that’s a rejection. That doesn’t mean a student isn’t worthy or anything else - it simply means they could accept so many based on whatever their requirements were - and that’s what they did and you weren’t one they chose.
However, these are businesses - and they are not set up to handle revenue shortfalls. So they use the WL as a hedge or insurance policy…for them, not for you. And that’s how it was explained to us by this school - that the school needed insurance to fill a full class. It’s that simple.
If they guess poorly, then they pull more off the wait list - and at some schools it happens.
Is it silly that schools put multiples of how many they accept onto the Wait List??
I think so but I’m not them - and they don’t seem to have a problem doing it. And others get giddy by it - and some will even have success.
U of M put 171% of the people they accepted on the WL. They admitted 15,722 but offered WL spots to 26,898. Others can be 200% or more.
I suppose WLs have low yields because by the time someone gets off, they likely have moved on, found a roommate, etc. and committed elsewhere. Perhaps that’s why they’re so big - so they have enough names that if they don’t have success convincing people to attend, they can offer a spot to more.
I can’t speak for why they do what they do - but the #s when you review them are pretty astounding. And huge wait lists as a percentage of students accepted don’t seem to be abnormal.
And look as a % of overall applicants - it’s pretty high.
Emory, in the last CDS, WL 19% of applicants, Case Western 30%, etc. Syracuse a similar 30%.
So - the truth is, while it might seem special to be WL and yes, that means you’re still in the running, the truth is at some schools - a huge proportion are WL.
Soft rejection - for many - but there are some victors if they’re willing to hang on.
I read an anecdote from a parent the other day - their kid got off two at NESAC schools - so there definitely will be some WL celebrations - but mostly heartache for those who don’t emotionally detach.
That’s how I see it anyway.
So Rick Clark is the expert and he’s the admissions officer from Georgia Tech. He writes a fantastic blog on Admissions.
Here are some thoughts on wait lists.
I think Rick Clark is brilliant! Well worth the read. Glad to see his perspective on waitlists.
Yes, he acknowledges it’s an insurance policy for the benefit of the school. All I’ve ever said - and I didn’t come up with the analogy - an admission officer did.
Every university has an enrollment goal they are expected to meet, and the admissions and enrollment teams are charged with bringing in that class–both in overall size and particular composition.
If yield drops (as it has most places in recent years), the college needs to be able to make additional offers to hit stated targets. Voila- The Waitlist!
He’s my favorite. In a podcast recently he talks about how since the pandemic, every schools wait list increased but it’s getting back to somewhat normal. They can just slow trickle till they get to the number they need.
So it’s funny since my son got wait listed for engineering at GT. We thought of it as a win. But once my son accepted Michigan and he started to flourish I reached out to Rick to actually thank him for not accepting him since Michigan was where he was meant to be.
Thank you for this posting! My son was WL on Friday to GT as we await our answer to UofM for Engineering. I hope we have the same fate!
So it’s really funny since I see kids wait listed or denied from certain schools and then accepted to Michigan. Nothing scientific. Of course someone else will come on and say they were accepted to both. Lol. Good luck.
Does anyone know if we think Thursday will be the day or Friday? No changes in my portal yet
Michigan has a penchant for releasing on Fridays.
For those who were accepted EA, what kind of portal astrology did you guys see? Anything in particular if you hit view page source?
