Chance me question for LSA OOS EA. If my dd has an unweighted 4.0, 6 APs plus 2 Dual Enrollments (APs can only begin junior year), including AP Lang, AP Stats, AP Macro, AP Calc, AP Government, AP Physics 1, College Composition (DE), does she have any chance test optional? She submitted EA test optional and her essays were excellent. Her ECs are great (2 varsity sports, lots of volunteering).
Of course she does. Many get in test optional. You can go back to her high school and see how many got in the last few years with her GPA and not sending in Act /Sats. This would be a more effective way to judge.
I concur. There’s just something about 100,000 frenzied people gathering that hits different than just about anything else.
Thank you. Many many kids get in from her HS (10 a year on average), and many have lower GPAs. But it seems that everyone who has been admitted (save one) has very high scores. But thank you for the words of encouragement.
They view you holistically. So highest GPA /Stats doesn’t win. Or get in
Lol. It’s the whole person and application. It’s their ecs, teacher recs etc and what they bring to the table to add to the community at Michigan so essays help set students apart if written well.
Good luck and Go Blue!
My personal anecdotal experience with Michigan is that they don’t love the California kids - it’s really, really hard to get in from CA. Bc the UC system is so strong, they assume most CA kids will go there for a fraction of the price. Maybe make it extremely clear if it is your first choice - that might help. (DD 22 knows tons of CA kids who were declined at UM and ended up at Ivies.) Good luck!
California sends the 4th most students to Michigan at about 1900 students. After students from Michigan, only New York and Illinois send more students but the numbers are close. It’s just a hard school to get into especially out of state. My son actually knew many students from California.
I so miss the days of hearing in December EA.
Yeah definitely will save me some effort and $$ to submit to some RDs
Just some deadlines to put in your calendars.
I have the opposite anecdotal experience using the Bay Area suburbs as a frame of reference. I have seen many kids opt for Michigan if they do not get into Cal or UCLA, maybe more kids are now going for Irvine now as well. This is mainly for CS / Engineering. My S24 has applied to Ross and I have not heard too many Bay Area kids at Ross, they may be opting for NYU over Ross if they do not get into Cal or UCLA.
Just reading the requirements and deadlines link above…to me it sounds like they won’t be deferring ea this year. They say those ‘who don’t meet deadlines or submission requirements’ will be pushed to RD, but that others are guaranteed an answer in late January. Am I reading it right? Would love a definitive answer in January
, I’ve got a reach kid and I’d rather they just tell her no so we can move on if need be.
If you didn’t meet the deadline or forget to submit something = AUTO move to RD pool which = postpone for final decision by early April = Deferal.
For everyone applying EA it states: The Early Action decision will be one of three: admit; postpone for a final decision by early April; or deny.
Deferal = postpone for a final decision by early April
Thanks,I only see the “update for 2023-24” page which doesn’t mention deferral as a possibility, any chance that this has been changed? I know that historically they deferred a ton of oos kids. But they are specific about ‘changes for 2023-24’.
I see that info from previous years and third party sites, do you see it on Michigan admissions site?
Yes
So if you applied EA you will know your fate by end of January. The decisions are admit, postpone, deny. Yes some get denied.
If you are postponed, then you go into the RD pool with everyone else. There are many theories about this. It seems lots of students including OOS are postponed. Now you get to wait with everyone else till April to get your decision even if you originally applied EA. Once your postponed your no longer EA.
So now in April you are either accepted, denied or wait listed. Lots of people get wait listed.
If applying to Ross, you still have to be accepted to your home school first (ie:LSA, Engineering etc). So if your postponed in January you still have a good shot at Ross. Decisions are made from January to April. They haven’t released the schedule for next year yet. But it’s usually monthly after January.
Certain schools like Stamps have their own dates and requirements as above link.
My only advice is hang in there if your not notified in January. It’s a great school and worth the wait.
Thanks, so nothing has changed. Not sure why they created messaging around “what’s new for 2023-24’” if it hasn’t changed .
Hi, I saw in the past that Michigan released early action decisions in waves and one of the waves was on December 15th. Any thoughts if they will do that again? I know it says by 1/31 but I’m hoping it’s still the same and maybe by the grace of god we will hear early because my DD is driving me bonkers waiting thanks all
Based on this forum last year, doesn’t sound like anyone heard until the last Friday of January.
(and a lot of those were “deferred”)
With the number of applications continuing to rise, DS is expecting to wait.
