University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

hi thanks for your response! i havent been admitted to hopkins but looking for advice on whether i should switch my application round from ED2 to RD. i haven’t been admitted there yet so its not binding. it was originally my top choice bc i never expected i would get into u of michigan and im definitely not treating life like a game… i was asking whether the opportunities at michigan would be significantly different from hopkins. it seems like michigan aligns better with my goals after hearing some of these responses so i am updating my hopkins application and planning to withdraw or switch to RD depending on their response

yes, thank you! i havent received a decision from hopkins yet so the contract would not be binding if i withdrew the application. i am contacting them abt the process  i don’t think i would get repealed from michigan for withdrawing another app if i wasn’t admitted right?? is there something i am not understanding abt the process?

thank you! this makes me feel confident Michigan is the right choice for me. it seems like it has the research opportunities and social life i am looking for!!! i appreciate your response

i was under the same impression! my counselor recommended i do ED2 in the first place but when i got into Michigan i got that feeling and i just knew it was the right school for me. i have been wanting to put that deposit down since i got in so that was why i wanted some advice

Really sounds like you have your answer. Withdraw your ED2 and change to RD. If you do end up getting in JH in RD then you can revisit your choices then.

Sounds like you have some great options!

I would only say that you shouldn’t assume honors at UMICH. Plus the honors being offered for first years has its advantages, but it’s not the same as their program to graduate with honors, so keep that in mind when deciding. I guess whatever decision you make should be done with the knowledge that you won’t have a decision on honors prior to your ED date.

I understand.

My point is - you applied to JH hoping for a lift but as it turns out it’s not your favorite. No one should game ED. People should ED (if they must) to their top affordable choice.

Yes, some minds change.

Odd to me you were unsure you’d get into Michigan. Anecdotally, I’d think JHU is way harder a get. To back it up and I don’t know what they use but Wallethub rates JHU 8th most selective and Michigan 49th.

I think the opportunities at both will be immense - if you want them to be. But the experience day to day will not be the same.

I hope you factored that in when you applied to JHU.

If you didn’t, then you need to revisit and potentially withdraw.

Good luck.

I know - and it’s frustrating - because getting in is one thing. But now you are there four years, day after day after day.

And that’s too big a risk - but many kids don’t seem to care. They’d rather find high ranked than best fit.

I’m of the view that getting into most of these places is way more difficult than being an average if not above average student once in. I don’t think an ED or ED2 boost will somehow vault you into a school that you cannot handle or even thrive at.

My LSA droid just got an email saying that consideration for LSA Scholarships is now automatic. No need to apply. Up to $10k/year in state, up to $25k/year OOS. Decisions by April 15. Anyone know how many of these they give out?

Can’t answer and it’s now I guess two years old but if you look at H2A of the CDS, you’ll get some idea.

1037 who didn’t need aid - received $4,387 on average.

That’s of 10,998 enrollees.

Copy so about 10% thanks.

The colleges have created the process to indeed be something requiring a degree of gamesmanship. These 16- and 17-year-old students should not be flogged for strategizing.

Each student has a different risk/reward threshold. In the game theory parlance I learned in college decades ago, some students will have maximax, some will have maximin, and some will have minimax regret approaches to applying to college. It’s not as simple as saying that a student should only apply ED to his or her #1 college. Depending on the student’s chance at various colleges, that is not always the approach that makes sense – or leads to the highest probability of happiness – depending on the risk/reward profile.

Good point.

I might of read it incorrectly. So no. We get people that do pull out of ED for whatever reasons and then want to go to x schools etc.

Is college of engineering better for CS than LSA since you can take more CS courses

So I was looking at the curriculum for CS in both colleges. Besides the core curriculum, I noticed that in engineering you take 26 hours of technical electives and 15 hours of general electives in which u can take CS classes if you choose. In LSA, you take 16 hours of upper level CS electives. I applied LSA CS but this is making me think if I should transfer to engineering. Am I just overthinking or misunderstanding something? I plan to become a software engineer if it makes any difference.

Not really. Both will get you a job in your field and lots of times at the same companies with both. Some people like one approach vs the other. Talk to engineering admissions to answer your questions. They are very helpful. Also look at placements with both degrees if that helps.

Just a FYI… Michigan is a big school with a small school feel. It’s super easy to make this large school feel small. Just one such example if you identify as female is WISE .https://wise.umich.edu/

Many, many other groups, clubs, activities on campus besides the 1600 clubs. My son started his own student org. If you get involved, it becomes small quickly. Hope that makes sense.
