University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

Randon question, if i am OOS having lived abroad for the past 10 yrs and i join UMich, can i apply for instate tuition after the first year? Also my parents would still be living abroad

No. They are very strict in claiming residency. Residency | Office of the Registrar

I am really surprised by this deferral for your daughter. It seems they have taken mostly 4.0 uw, even with the CNA license and medical job…? What is TO? Good luck! Do you know how many seats are offered in the program. i am not sure if we spoke already in the other nursing thread.

I really wish they were more consistent with rigor being such a large part of the equation.

My DS (OOs) took 21 of the 25 APs avails at his school ( the 4 he didn’t take were languages he did not takes ) getting an A in all and a 5 on every test but one with a 4 in 10th grade. 4.0 uw gpa , 1580 SAT ( 800 m 780 L ), NMSF and has won Best & Brightness for Language Arts so a strong solid writer. Michigan was his top choice so a well written why Michigan essay. He was Postponed to RD last week and just has been questioning what else he even could do to show them he wants to be there ( he has done two tours coming from FL) .

It appears that our school ( one of the top 10 AP schools In The state ) just doesn’t have a lot of history with UMichigan — so is he really not appealing to them simply for that reason :woman_shrugging:.

Keeping all our fingers crossed for that RD to be different— he already has 4 amazing choices ( 3 full rides and ND) but he really loved UMichigan

Does anyone have any data regarding the Stamps School of Art and Design? (applications, acceptance rate, yield) It has been difficult finding any info except for random stuff on the internet.

Cases like that of your son are certainly head scratchers. I know some people on this thread have stated that they are of the firm view that UMich does not yield protect. But a case like yours - extreme academic achievement, from a HS where he’s apparently not one of many applying, and from where he’s had many other acceptances with full rides - seems to say yield protection more than anything else.

Hoping for good things for him in RD at UMich.

The school is small about 600 students and 50% of the admissions decision is the portfolio, so an admissions profile and stats might look strange.

At any rate, I’ve seen an admissions rate of 10% +/- and since the program is ranked #8 in the US, I’m assuming the yield is high.

@DroidsLookingFor thank you . Yeah someone suggested that maybe they thought he would go ivy or something . He didn’t even apply to ivy — his top ranked schools he applied were Michigan and Notre Dame.

We will never understand the why — will just chalk it up to a wild ride someday - I just really felt for him when he was seriously down about how much he has achieved and it wasn’t enough. I just told him - it was enough and it wasn’t over just yet but April is a long way away for the generation of instant information

Thank you!! I have seen those stats as well. Had found some obscure stats on the internet that the mfa acceptance rate was 10% and the bfa was over 50%. Stamps indicated in an application review session that applications were expected to be about 1100.

love the program! small but within a larger university

I am an out of stater and am pleased to be postponed An indication that I had a worthy portfolio (grades are not spectacular) Just being inpatient and trying to gauge my chances

Have to say the process could be very random.

I hear you. S24 has similar stats, less AP’s but strong rigor, excellent EC’s, spent a lot of time on the Michigan essay, visited from OOS. We have pretty much let Michigan go, he applied to Ross and with a LSA postponment there is almost zero chance he will land Ross. It is baffling. I will add that from what I have noticed on this forum, others and schools in our area, majority of those who got in had stats that were within the 25-75% and very few with stats ABOVE the 75th percentile.

So sometimes amazing kids get looked over. In theory it could be to see if he really wants to go here. The school is building a class or equally amazing kids. Maybe they needed more of X and not Y this go around?? Tons of people get accepted in RD. Just let him know it’s not a reflection on him. I am sure his acceptances so far are equally amazing. But with close to 60,000(my estimate) applications. How does one choose?

School history does have some impact. They actually do follow the results of other students from your school /district.

seems odd. saw in-state case 1580SAT/4.0GPA, IB, good activity list… similar result… maybe something in the application not coherent? anyway, with this kind stats, it will find nice school ultimately in addition to RD.

“amazing” can be applied to most of applicants… reality, every applicant is rated category from 1-15, 1-3 immediately admitted… the rest…

I got deferred from UMICH and I have already completed the interest from found in the portal, is there anything else I can do? or was the form the only thing they will further consider. (It’s my top school so i’m really hoping for an acceptance)

I think it is more about yield protection than anything. They assume you won’t attend if you apply with 1550+ SAT because they think you will get into a private school of a higher caliber. I am glad I did not retake the SAT as someone with a 1510 because I might not have been accepted otherwise

Michigan has both accepted, deferred and rejected many, many 1,600/4.0 EA applicants over the years.

Of course, Michigan practices “yield management.” Most colleges do.

There’s a “secret sauce” to it, but to outsiders, like us, there appears to be no rhyme or reason.

That notion might be not true. there are lots of over 1550SAT admitted.
