Basically top 10 cs

if someone could help me make a decision between Umich and Carnegie Mellon for CS please. pros and cons. I’m OOS anyway so fees for both is almost same

Size, city, etc.

Have you been to both?

Which feels best?

Career stats?

CMU - Median $135K.

I can’t find U Michigan - but you can ask.

Best of luck.

First Destination (Post Graduation) Outcomes - Career & Professional Development Center - Student Affairs - Carnegie Mellon University (cmu.edu)

I agree. It’s fit and feel time. Both are highly ranked and respected in the industry. Both will get you interviews, internships, job’s. What you have to answer is what do you want your 4 years to look like? Different campus feels.

Also look at the curriculums side by side. Look at club, activity opportunities that you might enjoy doing. You might start to see differences that help you decide. Congratulations on two excellent programs.

I went to Carnegie Mellon and my daughter is at the University of Michigan. Both are excellent schools for computer science, but they are extremely different environments.

Carnegie Mellon doesn’t have early acceptance, though, so do you even have an acceptance there?

haven’t been to either, though I feel more vibe with Umich.
the link is very insightful. thanks

i have ED 2 so not much wiggle room but for financial aid they can offer

If you applied ED you obviously had a preference.

honestly i was swimming in the dark with a few Nos from what i perceived as excellent choices. and was trying to cling on something. then came the ED2 application option.

You can study CS at a million schools. You don’t apply ED unless it’s your top choice and you can afford the price listed on the NPC.

it’s not a game.

That said, get there quick and validate your interest.

But with ED you committed.

Good luck.

CMU’s ED2 is binding and you signed an agreement to withdraw other applications when accepted to CMU. There is even language about understanding the financial commitment.

Not trying to sound harsh but this is exactly what the “binding” in a binding round means. You don’t get to play it both ways since there is a statistical admissions advantage to the early rounds

@LuckilyClover @tsbna44 she is likely asking so she can withdraw her ED2 application before decisions are released.

Ohhhh. I took it as she is in. It comes ‘early Feb’.

Only the student can’t answer. Don’t know where they live but if Pittsburgh is remotely reachable I’d be there this weekend.

If not and they get in, assuming affordable the choice is made.

If CMU not affordable than neither bcuz UM won’t be either.

Should they pull ED now - may be too late.

Only they can truly decide which is better but again kids shouldn’t ED to game a better acceptance. They shouldn’t but they do.

ED isnt gaming the system, especially if you withdraw ur app before receiving the decision. people can change their mind, a lot changes in 6 months. colleges put a lot of pressure on young people and parents who don’t fully understand the process. my counselor pressured me to apply ED2 even tho the school was not my top choice. and schools have institutional priorities so any boost helps  just my 2 cents…
