University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

I got a 15k/yr “Victor Award” but I didn’t hear about the three that I applied for lol

Aw congrats! I’ll take it that it means I didn’t get anything then

Did you get that in your estimated cost or earlier?

Yeah, it was under scholarships and grants. I am super happy, but I am OOS so its still in excess of 50k/yr

congrats! was it need-based or merit?

it says the Victors Award is both merit and need based so idk lol

Depends on what you want and how picky. I have two kids in houses near Yost ice arena (so close to central campus) and the last two years have been a madhouse. Need to start very early and be aggressive to secure the house you want.

Be careful to understand the leases because landlords are adapting to tenant friendly city ordinances by restructuring leases in unique ways to benefit them at renewal time.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about housing. No personal experience but it sounds like there is plenty of off-campus housing, and not much on campus through UMich housing for second year and beyond. More of a matter of what you want to pay. Although you can find some stuff cheaper, I’m seeing people say $1500-$2000/month per person is not unusual. It’s definitely an expensive area and you don’t necessarily get much for that price either. Not ideal by any means. I was a little shocked when I saw some of the apartments for $2000/month. Again, no personal experience just reading online and looking at housing in the area through the UMich housing site.

You can find housing for around $900-1,000/month. Usually sharing with others. It’s usually an apartment for multiple students per apartment . If your in a luxury building you can spend a lot of money per room. All depends on what you want to pay for. Price is realitve to where you live now. For us in Chicago it’s about average. Sometimes a realtor can be useful also for the first time. @sushiritto what was your daughter paying with multiple girls?

Hi, when do financial aid packages come out?

I don’t think this is accurate, especially at the higher end. While there are $2,000/month apartments, most students live in shared houses and pay less. My daughter lives with 3 others in a nice house. Each has her own bedroom (my daughter’s is very large) and they share two bathrooms. Like most AA houses, it came furnished. They split $4,400/month. This house was not at all the cheapest they considered.

That’s good to hear, thank you. $2k/month for a college kid in what is not a major city seemed a bit ridiculous.

wow this is So helpful… my son is thinking he has a near perfect SAT and a 4.0UW GPA and lot of good awards and extra curriculars, I need to show him your post
Thank you so much for the insights

Back in the Spring of 2022, D18 paid $960 for her own bedroom and bath, including utilities in a newer townhome a few blocks from Central Campus.

Keep something in mind. Ann Arbor is one of the most sought after places to live. It makes the best retirement and best places to live in the US yearly and one of the best campuses out there lists University of Michigan is on their turf. Lots of young Profesionals and established families live in Ann Arbor.

Just popping into the thread to say that my oldest is a senior at UMich and has never had a problem getting housing, BUT it is something the kids have to stay on top of because there is fierce competition for good locations, etc. We pay 1300/mo right now and last year it was around 1K/mo, both of which are pretty reasonable, I think.

It sounds like the popular study abroad session is winter (aka what other schools may refer to as their spring semester).

  • how does that impact students getting housing since it is already competitive when you would be there a full school year?
  • does anyone know if study abroad tends to be a less expensive semester for the OOS student? I’m assuming the student pays the cost for the UM study abroad program cost and not the OOS tuition that semester.

Keep in mind Michigan gets out relatively early compared to some schools. My son was able to do a summer study abroad and an internship the same summer.

Winter is the most popular semester for study abroad since people tend to want to be on campus for fall (football, etc).

Basically, people either rent a place for an entire year and try to find someone to sublease in winter (which is hard because there are so many people who are doing the same). Or they try to find a place to sublease in the fall (again, challenging because this is the time when most people want to be on campus). Or they try to get a dorm room for fall semester only … which is also difficult (they just had housing selection for returning students and had 1100 spots for 2400 applicants).

One great solution for study abroad housing is if your student is planning to go Greek. Many houses will allow members to have a room for one semester, so they have no housing obligation for their study abroad semester.

Greek life isn’t for everyone, for sure, and it’s definitely not necessary to having a full and rich social life at Michigan. But, it can help with housing in another way, by providing sophomore housing without the need for early organization to find it. Sororities currently rush during the winter semester, so girls planning to do so often don’t worry about housing until they see if they will have a spot in their new house.
