Take it how you want, you get to have an opinion, too.
Go ahead, what’s your advice?

For my D25, she has two more decisions coming this Fri. If one of them accepts her, then, she won’t bother with the 250 word LOCI for UMich. We figure it’s a long long shot with so many postponed students as well as RD. I highly doubt if the LOCI will be a game changer.
Sounds like you’re ok with not being accepted, that’s fine.
But if Fall semester was a good one, 250 words is a cheap Lottery ticket
While getting denied is emotionally difficult, please celebrate your accomplishments. It is very exciting that you have Purdue as an option; it has always been competitive, but it is even more so this year with the growth in applicants and tightening of offers. not to mention Purdue is amazing for MechE. ditto to the recommendation to go visit. My nephew is there now and loving it. It was not one of his top choices before the visit, but he was so excited during the visit that sent in his deposit on the car ride home.
lottery ticket? you have to pay for 4 years.
UMich admission itself is a lottery… paying for it OOS is just another home mortgage… not a big deal
This question is not solely related to UMich. If a student withdraws an application before the result comes, does it not impact the yield of rate of that college?
Yield is based on the percentage of students that enroll after being offered admission. If a student withdraws before a decision comes, that isn’t included in the yield numbers.
Y’all are so sweet. Thank for your kind words
So the ECI or LOCI is optional. Some students get in without it and some think it’s the reason they finally got it. Some of course still write one and don’t get in.
As I stated up thread, it’s the choice of living with “what if”… Don’t live with the expectation that maybe if you did write one, things would of gone differently.
I taught both of my kids to "bet on themselves ". In other words if you want that internship or job or the last attempt to get into your university of choice then “go for it”. Go out of your comfort zone.
This simple advice made their college year’s very fruitful and active. They both made a name for themselves on campus, which led to internships and jobs and just a more fun experience.
But it’s a decision. I don’t think optional things when applying to college are really optional.
Is it worth spending another hour to come up with 250 word’s??
You want to use this as an update. You’re most likely sending in grades. Colleges like Michigan love students that are active on campus. So… Tell them how you will use their resources to make that happen and be specific.
They also want to hear that you want to be on campus. Tell them why. If you can’t figure out the “why” without repeating your “why” essay, then maybe you really don’t want to be at Michigan??
As far as cost and worth. Let’s please just put that to rest. In reality, all colleges are expensive. But for some like us it was totally worth sending my son here from Chicago. Others will say the extra money isn’t worth it. Both parties are correct for their personal family situation. I can easily argue both sides of the coin on this one.
My only advice is it’s probably not worth it if you have to touch your retirement or home equity but than again, these are personal choices.
One last thing. Once this is all done we do ask those that didn’t get into Michigan where they are heading to. It’s a chance to celebrate them. It’s a who’s who of great universities. There is truly a college experience for everyone.
Do you work in admissions? I am trying to understand your comment.
My son toured UM last year as an international student and was told to expect to be deferred and to not get discouraged. Not because his application “is not strong enough” as you put it, but because UM admits in state students before OOS and international.
You are correct. There are some internationals and oos that get accepted in EA but some that don’t. Just hold on tight. Everyone will see the stats will be similar. It’s definitely a process.
That is what our college counselor told us, EA is more weighted towards in state. And looking at our school history a lot of deferred / accepted.
Any AO will tell you they could easily fill the freshman class x2-3 with talented applicants, it usually comes down to institutional priorities. Not sure why they would lie about that and since I have heard it again and again from top admissions people I believe it’s true. And admissions is also a subjective process as those of us who have done any case study process can tell you.
Lots of discussion about who gets in EA and who doesn’t. With around (estimate) 65,000 EA applications no one can predict. We know they favor in state during EA but not sure by how much. Also many, many qualified students, get deferred but later get accepted. A few year’s ago this was done in waves and it could be a few day’s /week’s later. No, there aren’t waves like this anymore. When my oos son and his friends got accepted year’s ago he and his friend’s felt “Lucky”. They were all deserving. Many deserving students with the same essays, grades, ECs don’t get accepted. It’s holistic.
Students getting accepted to Stanford and Penn get accepted and denied at Michigan. Some get into Northwestern and UChicago but don’t get accepted at Michigan and yes some do.
There is a bit of luck in all of this.
Anyone getting accepted to Michigan or any school is deserving. Many that don’t are also. There will be over 90,000 applications for around 7300 spots or so… Trust me. We all need a bit of luck these days.
Please show grace when posting. This is a very “long” process.
I appreciate this post about the cost being “worth” it. We are out of state and didn’t expect an engineering EA admission for our daughter. We assumed she would get deferred and then if she did get in later, she would already have mentally been set on somewhere else (hopefully Illinois which is in state for us).
So we now have this dilemma about how to pay twice what we have saved for her.
I am assuming there is no letter coming with any merit aid? Is this fair assumption?
We will go visit for her admitted student day and I guess hope she doesn’t like it? That’s a joke, I’m sure she’s going to love it
I live in Chicago by Wrigley. UIUC was a very real possibility. But It’s not an inexpensive in-state school also. At the time Michigan was $63,000. Still not cheap. But we felt it was worth the difference for us. Every family has different things in their life that make it worth it or not. Good luck.
Just an n of 1 (and no shade to Michigan at all!), my D did not like her visit. She thought the campus was way too big, and didn’t want to have to take a bus to class and/or activities ever (student guide said busses are necessary for most students.) Her feeling was that in cold weather (which is much of the school year in Ann Arbor) was that she would just skip class rather than go catch the bus.
Is it true that tuition goes up for junior and senior year? We definitely need to facfor that in as well.
Yes. Just look up the cost of admission on the website.
