Just spoke to Admissions and they stated we would hear no later than early April
Does anyone know if merit scholarships are sent out with your acceptance letter or if they are sent out at a later time?
@joliemorgan I was wondering the same.
The admissions office and the letter of deferral both say that decisions will be released by early April, but historically the last wave is on/around 4/19. It seems unfair to call the 19th “early” April. If I got into UM I would attend, but the longer I wait, the more opportunity slips away from me at other schools. Anyone else in the same boat? Less than two weeks to make a college decision after 4/19 is not very much time!
Soooooo, chances of a 3/22 wave? lmao
@Knowsstuff or @sushiritto hoping you can help me with this question
So D signed up for Campus Day at UMich Friday April 5. She has never been there, and we plan to fly out for just one day (leave Thursday night and back Friday night). The last flight to get out of Detroit is 6:30 PM. Do we have enough time to attend campus day? How long does the event takes? I imagine we would have to leave the campus around 3 or so. TIA.
I just hope that this “cheating scandal” doesn’t impact the timing of any “waves.”
“Dollars to donuts” (old betting terminology), every top university is probably having to review their accepted applicants, which actually could be good news for everyone here, if they find any.
@Nhatrang Are you taking the “Flyer” bus from the Blake Transit Center, rental car or an Uber? The ride either way is about 35-40 minutes, depending on evening traffic. But the bus has to be scheduled in advance.
The new Delta-side of the Detriot airport is typically quick and efficient, in terms of security, gates, boarding, etc. So leaving campus by 3:45-4:00 PM and getting to the airport by 4:30-5:00 PM ish for a 6:30 flight would be fine by me. Leaving at 3:00 PM would be very conservative IMO. The United-side of the airport is old(er) and, while I’ve only used it once, I would allow for additional 10-15 minutes.
Our Delta gate (I think you’re from CA too?) is always at the end of the terminal, but there’s an tram/train built inside the airport that can quickly get you down to the ends of the Delta terminal.
I can’t remember, what are the campus day activities? I think in the morning you register at East Hall and then have a big get-together at the Student Union, which is being completely remodeled now. Or maybe it’s vice versa. Then it’s a tour of campus (Law Quad, Ross, Central Campus, North Quad, The Hill, new Biological Sciences Bldg., etc.).
You probably won’t be able to go off on your own and visit North Campus (Engineering, CS) or the South State or South U areas, if you take off at 3 PM. And you’ll miss out on the IM, Big House, Yost and Crisler Center.
@Nhatrang… What he said… Lol. Call and get the schedule so you can see what your missing. Later in the day is usually not that important per se. There is traffic going back to the airport. Enjoy your visit.
4/19 decision decision decision!!!
The thing I’m trying to wrap my head around is how does one comfortably apply to get into honors that late in the game and know enough before May 1st to help decide. D18 is interested in a Major ( PPE ) that necessitates Honors.
I seriously doubt there is a grand scale of false applicants that should interrupt any given timeline at any one school outside the top ten schools identified already. Yes those schools with identified coaches and situational scam alerts will have to comb over applicants. Likely ED and EA especially in the athlete scenarios. Nothing they can’t do over time and Claw back if necessary and turn to any waitlists if necessary. The unfortunate thing is athletes who get bumped by this scam are harmed the most IMO as it’s not like there are a lot of opportunities to be on your dream team.
So colleges far down the list of this scam shouldn’t really miss a beat as far as decision day.
At least in LSA, a student can join the Honors program later, say sophomore year.
Regarding, the cheating scandal, we already know kinesiology transfer applicants received an email that stated decisions may be delayed. And the University of San Diego is not a top 10 school, nor is USC or UCLA. We’ll see, as I said, I hope not. UMich is proud top notch academic school with a clean reputation, but if I were in admissions, I’d be taking a 2nd look. But that’s me. Better safe than sorry.
Top Ten
As in the schools already identified. Not as in Bestest schools. My mistake. Guessing they were mentioned in particular because of the likely higher degree of infiltration.
Not to say student X had their eye set on school A but guessing to a lessor extent of frequency. No way of knowing the B schools on the list of hit schools.
My concern is any school that has announced a potential delay might have good cause for concern. Let’s indeed hope not.
Many Schools have continued with their planned release dates without hesitation.
MIT with pie… couldn’t see them missing pie. Notre Dame is actually surprising many by a few days of guesstimates… on Tue the 19th. On and on…
Thanks @sushiritto and @Knowsstuff
Good to know about the airport! We moved to NJ as soon as hubby and I graduated from Cal. So we will be flying with United. We plan to rent a car for the day so we can be flexible. You think walking around AA is out of the question bc we won’t have enough time? Hoping to see the town a little as I heard so much about how nice AA is!
Maybe we will try to stay for another night. This kid doesn’t want to play varsity soccer in college but god forbid we missed a soccer game on that Saturday. She may just have to suck it up
Can you also recommend the best hotel to stay there? Walking distance to the school would be perfect! Thanks a bunch!
If your serious about Michigan stay another night if you can. Personally when we visit my son and I don’t want to drive to my mother’s 45 minutes away… We just do an Arbnb. Much cheaper in general.
Anyone else still not have their grades updated in wolverine access for first semester grades ?
Downtown and Central Campus is all walkable depending on mobility and such. Also, just depends how much time the university gives you in terms of free time. I’d stay the extra day, if you really want to get very good feel for the town, dorm selection, off-campus housing, sports complex, Greek life, etc. I’m a runner, so it’s no big deal.
I like the newish downtown Marriott a lot. I’d say it’s the best, but it’s not the Ritz Carlton by any stretch. It’s about a 10-min walk to campus. And there’s a beautiful 4-story YMCA just a few blocks away. I’m going back to help move out, but this time I’m staying at the Graduate. A 5-min walk to campus. Very nice, reasonable. I’ve also done Airbnb, but for me, the place has to feel right. I’m picky. Definitely can be cheaper for sure.
United the airline is fine, but the DTW terminal is old and feels abandoned. Not many stores or places to eat, IIRC. I prefer Delta to DTW.
I screenshot your post…
Thanks for the insights on U of M and the surrounding area. Gives a good sense of the place for a maybe near future visit. D18 is still in the deferred pile… likely choose the Marriott you mentioned. Is it mostly safe all around the campus and to and from the Marriott? Any bad sectors that ought to be avoided on foot?
It’s a beautiful old town, with historic architecture. I’ve run most of the immediate areas around town and I’ve never felt unsafe. I’m not aware of any bad areas. I know my kid has walked back several blocks from the Blake Transit center bus stop to the dorm at 11 PM w/o issue.
And my freshman did some off-campus volunteer work for class credit last Fall several miles away from campus (well beyond North Campus) and took the bus back and forth. Great bus system BTW, which is free. Obviously you always take the necessary precautions and be aware of your surroundings just like you would anywhere.
The Marriott is just on the outskirts of the downtown area, but then Kerrytown is on the other side, which is a nice residential area. There are some nice looking newer office buildings around it. In fact, I think UMich owns one of them, a nice brick building.
I remember going to orientation last summer and we were walking from the Marriott to campus in the evening and discovered the whole area had been closed off to traffic for a summer car show. I didn’t know about the car show ahead of time, but I thought, walking around with all the sidewalk cafes, restaurants, etc. that the whole aura reminded me of Ron Howard’s movie American Graffiti.
Hi,
Do you guys think it is too late to send an LOCI? I hadn’t really thought of doing it but UMich is and has been my by far my top choice and if I end up getting rejected I’d regret not sending one.
If not, any recommendations on what to say in it?
