University of Michigan Class of 2028 Official RD Thread

They fill institutional needs. If they lose out on an engineer from North Dakota or a marching band member from Chicago (it’s far more complicated, but you get the idea), they backfill with a waitlisted applicant with a similar profile.

Waitlisted. I was able to sign up for the tour

WL but booked a tour, now what do I do with that?

Yeah, I don’t really buy the whole “we don’t rank” line.

I don’t know how Michigan does it, but I asked Wisconsin that exact question. They said they conduct a brand new review for available spaces. So if there are 10 open spots in Accounting, they pull everyone off the waitlist who applied to Accounting and select from that pool.

That was due to the fall out of covid actually. All schools had larger wait lists last year. May 1st will be telling.

They offer it by institutional priority

Good luck to everybody, regardless of the result!

Daughter WaItlisted from OOS. SHE TRIED TO SIGN UO FOR admitted students tour and got the message that admitted students day is only for admitted students. How are others signing up for the day? Or are y’all just signing up for a tour? My daughter hasn’t been to campus so would like to peek in case she gets in although maybe it makes sense to not spend the $ on a trip until she does. Does anyone know how soon they start moving kids off waitlist and how many are moved? Thanks

OOS admitted after being deferred from EA!!! He’s admitted into the LSA Residential College so we’re not totally sure what the difference might be?

Hmm…so can every rower who also applied to do astrophysics decline their spot? Please? hahaha

Yes. They took 5% last year. 983 admitted off the waitlist.

Is there any reason to assume they may have a similar rate (or potentially bigger one) this year? I’m not banking on getting off the waitlist by any means but I’m wondering if it’s worth it to take a tour of campus when I can so that if an admission hits me by surprise I can make the decision as quickly as possible.

You would be able to do a regular admissions office tour, but not an admitted student tour.

The Common Data Set for 2022-23 shows 15k placed on WL and 77 admitted from it.

Yeah, I know. I’m just wondering if it is worth it to plan up a quick visit just to get a feel so that if a miraculous offer comes later in the summer I can make the decision quickly without having to plan a trip to decide.

My guess is that with the momentum from winning the national championship, yield will be higher, not lower so possibly less movement.

That said, FAFSA uncertainty overall may throw a wrench into everything at all schools.

So…hard to say.

Question. When does this waitlist drama play out? Is it an avalanche on may 1 or a leaking drip drop until May 1st and through out.? Obviously, other schools my daughter has have set deadlines since they offered scholarships. So they want an answer.

In the letter they said we’d hear back late June

In the decision letter I got (or the FAQ I can’t remember) it said that most offers would come out late June…which is annoyingly late, but I understand it takes time to evaluate the large volume of waitlisted kids. But, I assume they probably start thinking about reevaluation come May 1st, so maybe a painfully slow trickle starts then.
