University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

I’d wait until after the holidays. There’s no sure answers here. There are so many factors at play and so many lurking variables than any suggestions can’t be very accurate at all.

I personally would wait a bit, just so the admissions people aren’t that much more overloaded.

How does the deferral process work? I know your application is given another review, but who is doing the review? In the EA cycle, I know they look at your application 3 times. 1 random admissions staff reads it, then your admissions counselor, and finally a higher ranking staff makes the final decision. Does anyone know if the same thing once again occurs with deferred apps? It seems like it would be a ton of work to reevaluate thousand of deferred apps 3 times again, plus 20,000+ RD apps.

Here’s the difference between the two deferral letters:

If additional information has specifically been requested, such as first semester grades from senior year, it’s because one of the people reviewing your file thought it was necessary to best assess your application. There was either a concern with your grades through 11th, or perhaps the bulk of your most rigorous classes are in senior year. Either way, they weren’t confident that you would be admitted with what they currently saw in your file. Your application has been “set aside” and will continue on for further review once the additional information has been submitted. Once received, your application will be marked as complete and go back to the reviewer that had requested the information.

For students that received the other deferral letter, their application has gone through a complete review and received a final evaluation. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Since U-M sends minimal, if any, denies during EA, students that just missed being admitted or are among the weaker candidates all received this letter. Here’s an important distinction for students that received this letter. Sending in an updated transcript will NOT automatically generate an additional look at your application. It will just be added to your file and your territory counselor will not necessarily know it’s there unless they happen to look for it or you alert them. If Michigan is still your top choice, my advice is to write your territory counselor now and let them know that you are still very interested and plan to send in updated grades once they are available. Then once your updated transcript has been sent in, wait a couple of days for it to work it’s way through the system and then follow up with another email to let them know it should now be ready for them to review.

For either group, new test scores that are submitted will automatically generate an email to your admissions rep to alert them that new scores are in the system. Sending in additional letters of recommendation, new awards, etc. will rarely have any impact. At this point, strong grades, improved test scores, and continued interest are going to be the most influential in improving your standing.

@danloeb. Thanks for the explanation on the different deferred letters. Mine says the following:
Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

Here is my question… My school grades in 4 quarters, and quarters 1 and 2 make up my first semester grade (or semester 7). Our first semester is over at the end of January, and the earliest this grade would reach UM is mid Feb. so, should I send them my first quarter grades now? And then my semester grade in Feb?

@erockets You should hold off until your second quarter (seventh semester) grades are in.

Does Michigan superscore for the SAT?

Hi guys. I was recently deferred but just got my SAT II Math 2 back and am awaiting new ACT results from December 14, 2013. Can I send these scores to Michigan and will they consider them? Also, how does a very strong senior year along with improved test scores look after being deferred?

ACT 29
UW GPA 3.83 Weighted GPA 4.2
out of state, deferred from CoE. I’m probably going to switch to LSA though.
Umich is my first choice ):
Got the good deferral letter, soooooo i’m still hoping

@ethanking New test scores can be submitted and will be considered, as will strong grades from the first semester or second trimester of your senior year.

Does anyone know how to find out who is our admissions counselor?

^ that’s what I’m wondering too. I can’t seem to find out who my admissions counselor is.

What are you guys going to do to help your application now?

Just focusing on grades, they really only need the midyear report to make a decision.

Will retaking the SAT in January help?

they would probably have been doing better in this bowl game if they accepted me…

was wondering if anyone who got the supposedly 'bad letter" would share who the letter was signed by, please.

Are decisions “rolling” for deferred students, or do we all find out “No later than early April 2014” like the letter said?

You find out the same time Regular Decision applicants find out - so early April.

I heard last year deferrals were rolling. Is that right?
