Can someone explain what people mean by “overqualified” for a school. Just because your stats might be above they middle 50% certainly does not mean you are overqualified.

So You Got Deferred… A Quick Q&A

I was deferred - can I send in my first semester grades to help my chances?
Yep! Have your school send them to us (preferably through the CommonApp, but however they were sent originally would work as well).

What if my grades weren’t that great?
(That’s a judgement call you’re going to have to make. )

Can I write to someone to express my burning desire to attend the University of Michigan?
Yep! Find your territory counselor here and shoot that person an email:
admissions.umich.edu/undergraduate-admissions-team

How long do I have to submit materials?
If we specifically asked for something, you should submit it by the requested deadline. Any supplemental materials you’re submitting on your own can be submitted at any time (but the sooner the better)!

Is there anything else I can do!?
If you’ve sent in your first semester grades and your letter of burning desire, that’s pretty much all we can add into the mix at this point. Try and relax - go for a walk or read a great book or go on a multi-hour Netflix binge to take your mind off things! #nojudgement

Are there official statistics for the number of deferred students who got accepted?
Nope. We won’t know that until we’re completely done with admitting this year’s class.

How often are decisions sent out before mid-April?
It’s a secret to everyone. (Even us)

Really. It’s a “secret” how often decisions are sent out before mid April. What kind of nonsense is that? They keep records. Why would they even say something like this? Do they think it’s funny?

analysis: prior to this I was rejected from johns hopkins and deferred from both Tulane and Northeastern. There is definitely an element of randomness to this process. before last friday I was super down because I had not gotten in anywhere, and i totally thought I was in at tulane an NE. clearly, I was wrong. Defferals suck, but you’ll probably get in RD. anyways, to those who have been admitted… CONGRATS… and to those deferred or denied try your hardest to not get down because one amazing school is bound to admit you because they see your merits, and at that school you will be the most happy. When I got denied from JHU i was devastated. I thought it was the school i was meant to go to. But after a bit of time and an acceptance letter you realize that you can be happy at a lot of places as long as you make it you interest to be happy. Good luck to all.

@ariboy32 Congratulations on your acceptance to michigan
I applied to U.mich, purdue and Northeastern EA. I got accepted at Northeastern and Purdue but deferred from Michigan. So I guess it really is random!
All the best to you

Thankfully my son was accepted. He is absolutely crazy about UMich. There is absolutely no other place he wants to go to. What is it about UMich that has kids so hooked.

Folks, here’s an article that explains this year’s huge deferral. The EA admission rate has been dramatically and deliberately reduced.

http://www.examiner.com/article/why-thousands-were-deferred-this-year-by-the-university-of-michigan

@anxious. I think that’s very helpful and helps explain as you’ve said that this is NOT a normal year.

If they are satisfied with the final results it’ll probably become normality though.

I’ll say it again, if you’ve been accepted ED or EA to your top pick and money isn’t an issue: withdraw your application asap. It doesn’t matter if you were deferred or accepted, if you don’t withdraw you are taking up a spot someone else could have.

Yes please do, it’s unfair for people who really care about attending UMich.

@maya54 the next wave will probably come in late January like last year.

@kellz10 yes, write a statement of continuing interest to your territory admissions officer.

@ryan33 I didn’t apply here, but glancing over this thread, it is obvious that Umich deferred many over qualified applicants. Yes, at a competitice school like Michigan, it is expected that many high scorers will not be accepted. High scores are only one part of the hollistic process. But you can’t seriously tell me that all the high scorers who were deferred were seriously lacking in other areas. There is obvious yield protection at play and many(more than usual at a top college) less qualified applicants were admitted, probably for the sake of yield. I’m quite glad I didn’t apply because this is absurd.
