University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

Decision: Accepted

Applied to which school/college: CoE

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (760 M, 720 W, 800 CR)
ACT: Didn’t take
SAT II: 800 Math Level 2, 800 Chemistry, 800 Physics, 760 Literature (sent all)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.98
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Our school doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): I don’t take AP
IB (place score in parenthesis): Predicted 42 on 42
Senior Year Course Load: IB Math HL, Physics HL, Chem HL and English SL, Spanish SL, History SL
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Monash Prize 2013

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Vocal music, three engineering internships, Student Government, Math Club President, Editor and sports reporter of school paper, head of prom committee, two jobs, Piano (distinction from Trinity college of music), 5 engineering clubs, MUNs, science fairs, bunch of math/science competitions I won or placed second at, Vice President of Student Budget committee, two writing (newspaper) internships, etc.
Volunteer/Community service: 500 hours, went to Pakistan, President of a club of medical volunteers, habitat for humanity
Summer Activities: Musical training for 2015 activities, community service, reviewed books for school paper
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8 ish, I think they were pretty good. I talked about singing for the activity one, about my identity as an Indian American for the cultural one and how UMich has been my dream ever since I visited campus when I was 14, and how advanced the research facilities are, and how as an IB and research oriented student that appeals to me for the last essay. Common app essay was about the lab, and about being a girl in a traditionally male dominated field (engineering)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): These are really, really good. Probably 9.8. I got it from the math, history and physics teachers and one from my music teacher.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, good grades, test scores, engineering related ECs, recommendations
Weaknesses: Lack of sports
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I’m pretty well rounded, so that helped. I’m President of 6 clubs, and I think colleges look particularly for leadership.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted (Rutgers, Ohio State, UPenn)

General Comments:
I don’t think anything really set me apart, except that I have gone through a lot of trouble and bullying as a girl in science. Overall I think I got in because UMich has a holistic review and I tried my best through high school to be as well rounded as possible, and not just do science things, as hard as it was.

Good luck to everyone who was deferred!

A deferral is a decision if the school admits say 20% of EAs, defers another 10%, and rejects 70%.
The deferrals in such a case are the applicants who are marginal and without the deferral option would most likely be rejected. It is in the applicants’ interest to have a deferral option in this case.

UM admits some number (no one really knows how many, but let’s say 20%) of EAs and defers everyone else (say 80%), with no rejections.

Effectively, what UM does is it turns the vast majority of EA applicants into RDs.
There is very little information in the fact that someone was deferred.
Some of these deferrals are clear rejects, others it seems UM would actually love to have.

Such an approach is deceptive, considering that UM does not give the relevant stats.

Applicants need to be given those numbers so that they understand that there is a very high chance that an EA application to UM is really an RD.
Then those applicants can judge UM on a “holistic” basis and make informed decisions.

I’d guess that UM would have significantly fewer EA applications, especially OOS.

@michiganman2019 my son has the same stats as you, same interests, golf and hockey, in fact, on paper you look like the same person! He was also deferred from CoE. I wish you the best of luck. He was accepted to Purdue and a few other schools.

What evidence does anyone have that UM is deferring lots of outstanding people just to look better? All we have are the comments of people on this board who weren’t accepted. But thousands applied. From my perspective, these theories are nonsense. I’m OOS and was accepted, along with three classmates. I also got in EA to University of Chicago while several classmates were rejected with better grades and scores.

Lots of sour grapes here. And lots of parents commenting. Sorry if your kid wasn’t accepted. That doesn’t mean that Michigan’s methodology was flawed or the process wasn’t rigorous. It simply means that Michigan said “no”. Same thing happens at many universities. I’d add that if you child was rejected or deferred, they couldn’t be overqualified as, by definition, they didn’t qualify for early admission.

I’m a commenting parent who’s kid was accepted. ( she’s thrilled!). No sour grapes at all. But Because I help out at our school with college admissions stuff from time to time I’m trying to get a good handle on what occurred this year and help the counseling office provide advice. They were told on advance there would be many deferals but they were surprised at how many lower stats applicants got in over higher stats ones. That has NOT been the pattern at our school. Something is definitely different this year.

Yes it’s different, but not hard to understand. Michigan wants to stop over enrolling. They made it clear i think. So now they rethought their criterias and selected the students they really wanted. And by pushing the others into RD they have better yield prediction.

@alsa2000‌ hey u are exactly right!!! i was rejected from my ED last week and now just got the deferral from umich. it honestly sucks because both schools were my dream and to get a rejection and a deferral in the same week sucks and really makes u question the application process. so if anyone got into their top tier school PLEASE WITHDRAW AND LET OTHER PEOPLE HAVE A CHANCE !

@daxgrl351‌ literally in the same boat as you! Same scenario! Best of luck to you!

You have no idea (none of us do) of who Michigan is accepting or deferring as it relates to scores. You are basing your conclusion on a very small sample size and a lot of emotion. I will bet you right now that, like last year, when the stats finally come out the average for GPA and Test scores will have increased. They get thousands (record amount this year) of aplications so basing your conclusion on just a few is flawed to say the least.

@Ryan33‌ Thank you! Umich has a rather subjective admissions process. In my opinion, I’m not sure its possible to be overqualified at such a university. Clearly Michigan values student qualities beyond a good test score. Umich has 40,000 applicants and a 33% acceptance rate. There are tons of kids applying. With good test scores and gpas. Do you people honestly believe that a 34 on the ACT and a 4.0 makes you or your child “overqualified” under the circumstances of such a large applicant pool? Surely you or your child is smart, but so is everyone else. How do you stand out?

Decision: Accepted

(I am a international student and I would love to talk to others not applying from the States  )

Reflection

Strengths: internationality, school transcript, rec letter?

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly think I’m accepted because of the school I applied to…I don’t know anyone who applied to Umich Nursing, and also I am an international student.

Canada!

Does anyone know if UM sends a letter to your house if you’re deferred?

I got accepted but I got the notification via email and have not received a letter yet. I hope it’s not a mistake like the one Johns Hopkins made.

Reflection

Strengths: Essays and Course-load with extracurriculars

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I believe having a connection to sister at UM, being an Asian minority along with the good essays really helped me, because my stats really are pretty average.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to MSU, Indiana, Butler and was deferred to Case Western

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Income Bracket: ~70000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: Extracurriculars and Essays

Weaknesses: ACT score hands down

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I’m quite surprised I got in after reading this thread, considering my ACT score is way below the average, and just got my admissions email today. I think I was accepted because I showed who I was throughout each essay, and emphasized specifics I liked about the Bio program for the why michigan? essay.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Case Western Reserve, colorado state university, university of colorado-boulder, Fordham, university of Denver. Rejected from Notre Dame

General Comments: Although my ACT score is so much lower than many of those who got deferred, I feel as though the rest of my application really showed who I was and how I would fit in great at the school. I’m super excited and it’s definitely one of my top choices  Congrats to those who got in, and those of you who didn’t, don’t give up!!

@daxgrl351‌ glad to see my message is gaining traction. I was deferred from UMich and Case Western (my top picks) so I feel your pain.
