University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

@Hobothecat‌ I was accepted and there is a link that shows my status

Thanks @goblue100. Wonder if anyone who got deferred has a link that shows deferred status?

yea I was deferred too and I don’t see mine either but I think its because they had such an overflow of applicants this year

Hey, I was defered too. According to last year’s thread, apparently everyone who was defered did not get a link on wolverine access because it’s not a standing decision (ie. Accepted or rejected)

I’m baffled by the number of people who keep harping on and on about test scores. Michigan, like many highly selective universities, have been de-emphasizing test scores for some time. It is nothing unusual and reflects widespread unease amoung universities about SAT and ACT scores. Students who count on super high scores guaranteeing them admission are being disappointed at many universities. All I can say is, get used to it. This trend is increasing.

question - i got the acceptance email but was wondering if anyone has gotten a letter yet?

Question: did anyone got the official acceptance letter yet? I got an email saying i am accepted and that the official letter will come later…so does anyone know when? thxx

omg me too I have been stressing about not receiving anything other than that one email saying i got in. I hope they don’t make the same mistake JHU did…

General Comments:

Why take the tests if they, like you say, are a non factor at so many universities now? @excanuck99‌

@excanuck99‌ You keep pontificating - as if you know the inner working of the university. All your posts seem to be justifying your weaknesses, test scores, GPA, etc. Yeah, you’re the poster child for “holistic” admissions, you lived in 3 countries, blah, but please don’t deemphasize the importance GPA and test scores play in admission. Otherwise, Michigan will not be seeing increasing average SAT scores and GPAs every year.

General Comments:

no deferral letter will be sent.

if you’re deferred, they don’t show the deferred status. it’s on their admissions page, if you want to read for yourselves.

@nnocnat2‌ & anyone else who thinks their “essays really won them over”… lol… do you really think that with the 27,000 people who applied for early admission, they had the manpower dedicated to admissions to read through 75,000 essays in six weeks? If so, you are unbelievable naive, egotistical, & self-deluded. This is a numbers game, pure & simple. (not just GPA & test-scores, but how much $$$ Michigan can make out of the admissions process: they made $1,755,000 in just the application fees thus far)

anon, money has nothing to do with it. Whether those students apply EA or RD 1-12 weeks later is irrelevant. Either way, Michigan will receive tens of thousands of applications. Applications are not a money generator for Michigan or any other university. The more applications are received, the more officers the admissions office will hire, so it is a zero sum game. Most universities charge application fees and those are used to pay for the salaries of the admissions office. For a university that has an operating budget of $7 billion, $4 million is completely insignificant and utterly irrelevant. There is nothing strange or suspicious about that.

As for not reviewing all applicants, I am not sure where you got that information from. Michigan has 25 admissions officers. Each one is allocated an area/state/country of equal size. That means approximately 1,000 EA applicants to review in 6 weeks/admissions officer, or 150 per week or 30 per day. Although it is a lot of work, admissions officers at most major universities spend 10-15 minutes per applicant, meaning that each officer can cover 4 applicants per hour, or 32 applicants in an eight hour day. Now we are assuming admissions officers only 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week. During the September-April period, they probably work closer to 10-12 hours/day, 50-60 hours per week, so they can technically cover 200-350 applicants per admissions officer per week. The numbers add up. Michigan most certainly could go through 27,000 EA applications in 6 weeks with 25 admissions officers. You can find out more details about how areas/states/countries are assigned to officers by scrolling to the bottom of the page below. Like I said, there is nothing suspicious. The numbers add up.

Yes, yes I do. If it was just a numbers game, we wouldn’t have such a mixture of high and low stats getting in and getting deferred… If it was a “numbers game” we would be able to see a clear pattern in the deferrals and the acceptances and this is obviously not the case.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: No clue why I didn’t get in

Same, I was accepted and my status has been updated. No letter in the mail yet though.

@Chefmom99‌. I don’t get it either. My daughter’s stats are close to yours and we are OOS. She does have more leadership stuff but not your medical experience. Interestingly in our Michigan nursing school session they downplayed having medical volunteer experience as important. When someone asked about it after the person was like " we know it takes connections to get those most places so it doesn’t impress us" ( they seemed to place it on the same category as expensive volunteer trips to developing nations). At another school ( iowa) someone asked if medical experience would help and they were just point blank ‘no’.
