@dangkat5 Hey congrats!! I applied the day after you, so hopefully I can get my decision soon.
@chinmato Thanks! Good luck!
I have been following this blog for a long time. As the days go by, it is becoming more apparent that Pitt will probably not be awarding us any merit. They are only awarding these to tip-top students. Which might explain the lower yields from the past year and the higher scholarships this year. These same students either choose higher ranked schools or they were offered better scholarships somewhere else. I wish they were a little more holistic which their approach.
She was accepted a few months ago and has been one of her top choices. But as other acceptances started to roll in so have the scholarships. So far she has received a few fabulous scholarships from some excellent schools and as of right now, she will probably be committing to one of those Universities sooner rather than later. She wants to be able to get in the cue for a good dorm as well as priority class registration. I do not blame her at all. For these kids (and us parents) the anxiety level runs high and they just want to move on and enjoy their senior year. I just wish some of these schools would not drag the process for so long, especially those with rolling admissions. Many of her classmates have already committed to their future schools which is very exciting to see. Just can’t imagine waiting until late March or April to find out about finances. I am very hopeful for @Kayak24. Not sure where else you applied to, but I know Pitt will come through for you as well as everyone else here… But please Pitt do it sooner rather than later… Congratulations to all of you. You are all well deserving.
@1917souci , thank you. I agree with you in that it is difficult when schools drag this out. My D gained interest in Pitt late (we had originally ruled it out due to distance) and we have not had the opportunity to visit (although instate, it’s a good five hours away). We know so many people who love it there so we are hoping that it’s an option for D, but truth be told it will not be a contender on her list unless good merit comes through because, like your daughter, other schools have offered opportunities which are difficult to turn down (including full tuition and more to some schools for being a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist…though Pitt doesn’t know about that).
For a time I was stalking the mailbox for word from Pitt but I’m starting to believe that instate awards may not be as generous or as timely. Good luck to your daughter and I’m confident she’ll be successful wherever she lands.
Hi! Do you know if you don’t get a scholarship, if you can ask for another scholarship to be matched at Pitt?
@Kayak24…Wow Full tuition!!! She will be fine. It is nice to have options and the only way you can have those options is by creating them. I remember the GC telling us, “you daughter has a chance to get into Michigan and Boston University” and I remember asking her “Who is going to pay for it?” The room got very silent. We choose to chase the merit opportunities. We only applied to eight schools where her stats would fall into the middle 50% (some on the lower end and some on the higher end) and we figured that she would either get into some of these schools and maybe get some merit… We knew full well that none of it was a given including getting accepted to our state school which has only gotten more and more competitive every year. By the end of the day, we hoped for a few opportunities which luckily for us, we have them. Pitt devotes this whole page to a diversity scholarship No different than many of the other schools. We are still hoping, although as I said before, time is probably not on our side to get an opportunity. But again, the sooner the better, these kids deserve an honest answer…
@RUPITT I heard that if you receive a scholarship, you might have an opportunity to let them know about other scholarships you have received. Some schools might decide to match. Its like trying out for a team. Who wants you more. I think it is worth a shot if you really want to attend the school. But I believe you have to have a scholarship already in order to see if they would increase it/
@1917souci I agree with you. Pitt does need to explain that the diversity scholarship stats are almost always in line with the stats specified on the scholarship page. I’ve browsed these forums extensively (as you all know lol!) and I’ve never seen them lower their minimum stats for diversity. As @itsgettingreal17 says, the only difference for the diversity scholarships is these are funds that are specifically set aside for diversity.
The candidates are ALL high achieving, ACT 33 plus kids. I think I saw one 32 ACT at some point but never anything lower. It’s competitive.
I am glad your daughter has good options. It would be awesome if she did get something from Pitt—we all root these kids on and just want the best for them.
@carachel2 Do you have any insight on when Pitt requests mid year grades and senior year SAT? SATs were 50 points higher and anticipated mid year grades to be all A. What has been the a chance of acceptance in prior years for kids that were requested to submit?
@Thewaiting4ever I don’t have any insight to that…I’m so sorry! Hopefully the Pitt rep can answer your questions.
Have you called the admissions office? They are always incredibly helpful.
@Thewaiting4ever, We will sometimes ask for mid-year grades/senior year SAT when the Admissions Committee would like more information before making a decision. Chances of admission are case-by-case, it really depends on how you perform in the mid-year grades/SAT. If you want to give our office a call to discuss your specific application, you are welcome to do so: 412-624-7488. Once the requested additional materials are received in our office, we will send you back to Admissions Committee and they will try to turn around a decision within a few weeks.
Best of luck!

@MPT3D , I second what the others have said. I believe I recall seeing just a couple of in-state kids who got awards and posted on CC.
Now I am also wondering the turnaround time. Has anyone who applied Oct or later received scholarship notification? Maybe they review in order of application receipt versus immediately flagging apps which meet statistical merit thresholds.
Does anyone know if a tuition scholarship can be applied if they are accepted in GAP? From our reading of the materials it looks like scholarships may not be applied if you are accepted into GAP
One thing I will share that we have discovered through this process is out of state schools (including Pitt) have been more generous than our in-state MN flagship with our dd. She has a 35 ACT, 4.0 UW, national merit semi-finalist. Pitt is one of her top choices so I am thankful for the scholarship opportunities she has there. When she started the process we counselled her that often out of state schools will be generous and possibly end up cheaper than in-state options and that has been the case for her so far in this process. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear!
@Mnacttutor I have seen nothing like that on the PITT website. Why would they NOT be applied if you are in GAP?
@Mnacttutor , my D has the exact same stats as yours (4.0 UW, 35 ACT, NMSF) and we are in-state so it will be interesting to see the Pitt Merit outcomes for in-state vs OOS same-stat kids.
I didn’t see it on the website, but my daughter said on her reading in the application that scholarship money would not be guaranteed which is why I am asking here as it seemed unclear. I will probably just call admissions as they will know
@Mnacttutor , I would assume that language means that scholarship money cannot be applied to the graduate studies. I highly doubt it’s referencing undergrad.
@Mnacttutor Please update here when you find out as there are many GAP applicants WITH scholarships on this board!
My daughter knows a medical GAP student and she most definitely is using her scholarship $$. “Scholarship money may not be guaranteed”…is it perhaps referring to what would happen if your GPA drops? Just wondering. Medical GAP was never anything my engineering daughter had on her radar so I really don’t know.
My son was admitted to Dietrich - pre-med, is eligible for the Honors College, and was invited to apply for GAP. He applied in late October and received his email notice last week and his letter on Monday.
