I submitted my application a few weeks ago and received confirmation via email, however, I am still receiving emails asking me to Apply to Pitt. Additionally, when I log into my.pitt.edu, I do not see any information regarding application status. I just see the sidebar links like Ask Cathy or visit one of the campuses. Is this normal?
My son was accepted 11/17 and still has not heard anything about scholarship money (although he did get a letter saying he was accepted in to honors college). He has 1480 SAT, AP classes, 4.0 GPA etc. He was offered a huge scholarship to Temple University Honors College and is trying to choose between Temple and Pitt but it’s difficult with no scholarship offer from Pitt. He emailed the Office of Financial Aid today asking if he would be offered anything as finances are also a big consideration in his decision making. I hate for it to come down to money because Pitt has a wonderful program but I told him perhaps he can go to Pitt for Graduate School if this doesn’t work out. I know they have until March 1st to offer something but it just seems so long a time frame in comparison to other schools.

It is now 12/26 and still no merit scholarship award. We’re guessing he’s not getting anything as we have received 2 additional letters encouraging him to enroll. He is only interested in Temple University or Pitt and Temple offered a huge scholarship a week after his acceptance which is why this process with Pitt seems so frustratingly long. He’d like to make a final decision but without a scholarship offer from Pitt, there’s not enough reason to choose Pitt over Temple. He emailed Pitt today asking if he was being considered for any merit scholarship so he can get on with making plans for visiting the university again or not.

@StaHos I know it’s difficult to wait, but I don’t think it’s been that long of a wait yet.
If he just got accepted a week before Thanksgiving, then the committee has only met a few times since then. Classes start back up on 1/8 so hopefully you will hear something around the middle of January or February.
My D waited 4 months for her merit letter. And decisions don’t have to be made until in the spring. Financial aid awards (if he applied) come out in February at the earliest I think.
My D has not heard anything about merit money and she was accepted in the middle of Sept. with mention of Honors College and merit consideration. In state, 1500 SAT, 3.8 uw, 5.0 w, Neuroscience, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. 6 AP classes, 10 Honors classes (at least), probably in the top 5% of her class (they don’t rank). National Merit Commended. Answered all 3 short answer essays. Went on an official visit (Ready, Set, Pitt program - it was a great full day visit). I am still hopeful that they could offer her something by March.
Do they stop granting merit in early March or late March?
The only hiderance that I can think of is that we live close to the University and offer no geographic diversity.

I agree with everyone here… It is extremely baffling how some of you have not received any Merit from Pitt. @StaHos “I hate for it to come down to money because Pitt has a wonderful program” I know how you feel. These kids want to move on and for many of us, money will dictate where these kids go to school. It is the reality of it all. We did not get any Merit at Pitt and based on all the incredible information posted on these boards, it is more likely than not that we will not get any. The wonderful thing is that you have a good option at a great University such as Temple Exact reason why you apply to many schools in order to weight your options
Once the new year rolls around, many of these kids are ready to move on from the application and acceptance phase into other decisions such as revisiting the school, admittance day, dorm and roommate options, and the buying of all the school gear. You have to love those schools that have been incredibly transparent with Merit information. Some do it either with their acceptance letters or within a few weeks of acceptance. As the days go by, I now my kid is getting more and more excited about her other excellent options. She is even going to watch some of these Bowl games where some of these teams are playing. Who her? LOL!
My S didn’t get merit money as well. 1510 SAT, maybe the weakish GPA (3.6+ uw, 4.1+ w) due to a disastrous freshmen yr (sports injury - he missed over 3 wks of school on and off that yr) is the reason. That said, I can’t say I am disappointed or matter to us anymore. We got a big scholarship from CW and he got into UMich (both EAs). It is kinda crazy to read some of the stats here that haven’t gotten any merit money. Maybe they ran out the budget with all those early grants, or maybe they are waiting to see if those being granted the money will stay with Pitt. This whole college application process is filled with randomness and totally irrational. My S was rejected outright by a lower rank school (rank in the 70s, applied ED - THANK GOD in hindsight) - and accepted by CWRU with big scholarship and miraculously gotten into UMich EA with his preferred major/research oppty… and yet nothing, zip from UPitt other than the button change (not even Honors College notification…so we assume NO )… Go figure.
@Mickey2Dad Wow, it seems Pitt has been all over the place with very high and very low merit offers. When did your buttons change, maybe they haven’t gotten to you or maybe Pitt is reaching a limit for giving out merit money. Regardless, CWRU and Mich are great schools that probably carry more “prestige” than Pitt. Maybe fill out a cost-analysis if PITT is still a top chocie?
@TheBurbs Applied ~Nov 10, button chg ~ end of Nov… UPitt was not high on my S’s list, but he would consider this if the other options failed. He got good test scores and very strong soph/jun yr grades… but the Frosh yr GPA was hideous, multiple Bs, due to the injuries he had then. We were literally had a heart-attack when his prefer ED school dinked him, then a week later, we got news from both CW and UMich. We are basically written all the other schools off at this point other than CW and UMich. The whole process is so unpredictable. We knew the GPA will be an issue so we didn’t push him to apply any top tier school and UMich was a - hey, what the heck, maybe they will care more about the performance during the non-injury induced dip years… and seem like they did. Cost is not a huge factor as we have enough savings from all these years get him at least 50-60% thru even with OOS costs. CW’s merit scholarship basically filled in the rest of the hole…and UMich’s aid package (based on my D’s experience) should be workable as well.
I am glad you are on a path, @mickey2dad. Seems we are waiting longer for the clarity.
Hopefully those kids who have accepted an ED (binding) offers elsewhere have already withdrawn their Pitt applications and that merit money has gone back into the pool. I’m not sure how it works or if Pitt already accounts for that, but sounds like a lot of very deserving kids are still waiting. We did withdraw immediately.
And honestly, @kayak24, I am sure ED applicants are withdrawing their applications if they are attending their ED schools because deposits are expected often in 2 weeks, and withdrawals are a part of that process. The only reason I think ED applicants would not do this is if their financial aid package has not been given to them, OR their financial aid is not sufficient and they are backing out the their ED agreement. If I was a college like Pitt, and our policy was to award money until March or until the end of March (anyone know the answer to this one?), then I would keep awarding that recycled money. Grinning…

We were hoping for more $$ but I heard that the first offer is really just a starting point. He also received a full tuition scholarship to SUNY StonyBrook so hopefully we can possibly negotiate for a better offer to make it competitive.
