@carchel2 and @heyhaygrl, how much weight would you apply to her 22 college credit hours towards the abnormally high merit award for the given stats? I’m asking because my son (a junior in HS) will also have a significant number of credits by the time he graduates, through a dual credit program.
I realize we are all just guessing, but I haven’t seen many applications post with that many college credits. Personally I believe these should count for more than AP credits, since Dual Credit classes are actual college course, taught in a college setting, by college professors.
@gschally My daughter will have 8 AP and 1 DE class under her belt when she graduates. Of those she has taken they are primarily 5’s and this year’s AP Calc BC is a wild card but assuming a 4 for the AB portion. The rest of her APs from this year should be solid 5’s based on her past history with testing. I’m not sure how much weight they put into incoming credit hours; she got 15K for a 4.0 uw GPA and a 34 ACT. It’s an absolute mystery to me as $20 K would have made this decision so much easier for us as OOS parents. She’s still in the running for Chancellor but quite frankly it’s such a long shot that I don’t put any weight into it at all. Her short answers were well written, her ECs and Volunteer Hours are in line with other kids. I really don’t know what the magic science is behind it to be honest. She did show a lot of demonstrated interest, which I think does help.
@xi8a4go —Pittsburgh won’t “bargain” for scholarships. They can adjust your scholarship offer if you can show that your bottom line cost of attendance is lower at another school because of that school’s offer.
I see you have an ACT 31. Pitt’s threshold for merit is published at ACT 33 (although admittedly it looks like there are a few outliers this year so who knows for sure??? We know many ACT 32s from last year who got zero so at least last year they stuck to their published criteria).
Anyway, I have no experience submitting a cost analysis from other schools when the stats are below Pitt’s published threshold. Maybe someone else can chime in? From year’s past I would say it’s doubtful that Pitt will “bargain” when the stats start out below their threshold. But again—I’m just an audience member and have read the threads here for a few years. It could happen?? IDK.
D had a 34 ACT, was given $15,000 initially and then awarded $2K more per year when she/we submitted a cost analysis showing offers from two other schools. The offers varied in amount, but the bottom line COA (Cost of Attendance) was lower at those schools and Pitt did come back with a bit more.
Has anyone with a sat of 1420 received any merit aid from Pitt. We are oos and my daughter is so disappointed
that she has admission to Pitt but no offer of aid. Also, does Pitt match aid offered by other schools or should we just explain to her right away that it will be unaffordable for us.

Keep in mind that the applicants are competing against their peers in each college. I think I saw one poster with an ACT score of 32 that was offered merit, but I don’t recall if they posted their college.

[] Top 7% of class. This one really bugs me because of the way our school district weighs DE and AP courses. The “top” students in the class are all full-time DE students that haven’t taken a class at the HS in 2 years.

Within about 72 business hours of submitting your application you should get an email from Pitt’s Help Desk. They will give you information to log into a portal and check that your application materials have been received and processed.
@cardinal27 - Hi! I would explain to your child that it will be unaffordable because even though Pitt does match scholarships, it is very rare for them to do so.
Has anyone been rejected by the Pittsburgh campus & accepted to another campus even though another campus was not designated? My son was not accepted to the Pittsburgh campus and is not interested in attending Bradford but he did get a $7,500 scholarship. He has a 1460 SAT, 3.6 W GPA, 19 honors classes, top public school in PA & applied to school of liberal arts.
@Mnacttutor, re: your experience that OOS schools (like Pitt) are offering your child more $, we are almost certain to be in the same boat.
Although it will be a loooong time until our California public universities release admissions decisions, we are virtually assured that the most our son would get would be a thousand dollars or so (which would come with priority registration for classes, which is a big deal), and even that is extremely unlikely. Lots to love about Pitt!
