@TheVulcan
Thank you for the analysis - that explains it I guess. Our school does not rank - so despite high stats no merit(:. What a disappointment.
I would hope it doesn’t really work the way their NPC suggests it does:)
Is there anyone here from schools that don’t rank that received Pitt’s merit this year?
Our school does not rank and I know of 2 students (OOS) who have received merit from Pitt so far this year. One got 10k the other 20k. Mine was accepted back in September with good stats and ECs and essays but still waiting to hear on merit.
@brown2024
Thanks. Agree it is hard to pay OOS for premed. No we did not fill out the FAFSA

My school does not rank. I have specifically asked this question at most college visits 1 on 1 with a counesolar and everyone said they will not penalize yhe student if the school does not rank. In the counsellor form on the common app, our counselor checks the box to indicate the school does not rank.
Yes. My son received some merit. His HS does not rank.
Glad to hear they don’t seem to be penalizing students whose schools don’t rank. Our school does not rank.
So I will keep checking the mailbox:)
It’s a quality state school. Reputation maybe not on par with Pitt or PSU but I liked it after our visit. I liked the campus, the kids, and the admin we met with during open house. It’s Philly with good food and lots to do. I suspect the major turnoff is the surrounding area. It’s rough but I went to Pitt back in the day and it was also rough. Much better now. Like most city schools you have to be aware of your surroundings.
GT is awesome but there are plenty of good, affordable state schools that are strong in STEM. Pretty much all the Big 10 schools. Also NC State, Clemson, Va Tech, Rutgers, Maryland, Florida. I really liked NC State. I was hoping S20 would apply but no luck.
My daughter’s high school doesn’t rank. She was accepted into SCI back in early September and was offered $15K of merit per year late October. We are OOS.

There goes our theory reg. SCI…
Congrats again!![]()
@TheVulcan thank you! My theory is that the kids with max stats (e.g., 36 ACT) who haven’t heard about merit yet are going to be in the running for Chancellor’s. Just a hunch.
@Beekayweha it will be interesting to see if that plays out. Lots of changes for sure.
In the past, Chancellor’s invites were an interesting mix of ACT 33-36 and most definitely not all ACT 36.
S got $15000/yr (In state) but no Chancellor’s invite nor GAP invitation yet.
DD got 10K/year in state. Invite for GAP for engineering came soon after her acceptance.
Sounds like Chancellor’s invites to be interviewed would happen in February but VERY few are granted… so we’ll keep our hopes low on that one.
@coldsnapple, @Susanb33, congrats!
Do you mind sharing stats, school applied to, application/admission date, and date merit letter arrived.
Thanks in advance!
FYI—daughter submitted app October 31, and today she has the accept/decline buttons!! Now we wait for word on merit. National Merit Semifinalist, 4.0 unweighted, 34 ACT, 1500 SAT, 7 APs, goes to small but challenging charter school (whopping 17 kids in her class) rank is either 1st or 2nd, we haven’t been told yet. We are OOS, dad and both paternal grandparents are alums.
