University of Pittsburgh Class of 2024 Official Discussion Thread

I see this forum has devolved quickly…

@jdcollegedad it’s great to read how much of an impact our affordability efforts are making! Thank you for sharing and I hope you enjoy your time at Admitted Student Day.

@hailtopitt1787 Thanks. Definitely a game-changer for us. Looking forward to the visit. There is a separate forum that is discussing observations from a recent Admitted Student Day that you might find useful. Someone on that board indicated that they hoped Pitt Admissions would read it and incorporate feedback into future days.

@hailtopitt1787 Hi hailtopitt1787, My S was requested to submit his mid-year grad and he sent it thought SRAR more than 2 weeks ago, and still no news yet. Do you know when he will hear the decision?

@hailtopitt1787 do you have any timeframe as to notification of selection/invitation for chancellor award? Also does current merit award from Pitt exclude in anyway opportunity to be considered for chancellor? We were very grateful to have receive a large merit award from Pitt early on and hoped to understand of we would still be considered in the chancellor scholarship process. Our son is very high on Pitt and it seems awaiting this opportunity and the potential invite to the medical GAP program leaves his decision between Pitt and his Ivy acceptance. It’s funny that Pitt was first place we visited along this admission journey starting junior year and it is shaping up to be where he will end up…sort of ironic.

@jdcollegedad Agree wholeheartedly regarding UPitt and financial aid award. We were very pleasantly surprised as well when DS received award notification. As an OOS applicant with a Direct Admit to the Nursing program and an EFC in the 18,500 range, we weren’t really expecting much in the way of Merit and/or Grants. The awarding of both the Pitt Success Grant and Panther Pride Award has put UPitt within reach for us financially, and now will definitely be put on the “short list”!! @hailtopitt1787 The affordability efforts are much appreciated and most welcome here!!

@YS1111 it should still be about 4-6 weeks but your son can always reach out to his Admissions Processor to get an update on his status! https://oafa.pitt.edu/processors/

@PAdude he can certainly still be invited to be a part of the review process. Interview notifications will be sent in early-February and interviews will take place throughout the month of March.

Congratulations on the merit award, by the way. I hope your son decides to commit to Pitt, it sounds like he would be a great addition to our campus community!

@dvckennyd that’s amazing, so glad to hear it. Now we keep our fingers crossed to earn the top spot of that list!

@hailtopitt1787 Sorry if you’ve already answered this question, but I didn’t see it in earlier threads. My son was accepted about 17 days ago. So far the portal doesn’t indicate any merit aid. In your opinion, what’s the longest time period for learning whether he will receive merit aid? He also applied for the Nordenberg Scholarship, so I’m not sure if that would impact my question. Thanks

@JPE some students can be reviewed several times before an award is made but they would definitely know by March 1. As far as Nordenberg goes, the semifinalists will be interviewed by March 1 and I anticipate those invites will be going out sometime in February.

Good luck!

@hailtopitt1787

As a longtimer here and a huge fan of Pitt, it’s nice to see the pure merit awards continuing and now the need based aid appears to be improving.

At what point will Pitt update it’s Net Price Calculator? As you know, this is the only tool families have available to them in exploring costs.

I just re-visited the NPC on the Pitt website. I entered a top 1% student with an ACT 35 and an EFC of $11,000 (someone above noted theirs was similar and they appear to have gotten significant need based aid).

According to your NPC, the student entered above got $0.00 in merit scholarships and $0.00 in need based aid other than federal loans.

If Pitt really is going to go out of their way to improve affordability and need based aid, you really need to update your NPC to reflect those changes. And why ask about merit stats on the NPC if the NPC won’t reflect merit awards?

Things for Pitt to ponder for next year!

@carachel2 you are absolutely right! I will pass along this recommendation to our stakeholders. Thank you for bringing it to our attention!

@hailtopitt1787 as a Penn State grad I too must commend Pitt for their merit awards. It’s a little embarrassing that a school(PSU) with so much financial support for their sports teams can’t put a little more skin in the game with Merit. My hat is off to Pitt for getting their priorities in order!!

DS Got an financial aid email with 5000 in Panther Pride award and 3000 in federal loans .

Does this mean there will not be any additional merit based scholarships that will be offered?.

There may be some more merit to come later…how do your daughter’s stats look relative to some of the merit awards reported in this thread? That is probably your best indicator as of right now.

Note that Pitt is shifting financial aid dollars from merit to need based aid, so overall fewer merit awards to be handed out.

My kid received a “financial aid” award today and it was only a $5500 loan. Can’t tell you how bummed and disappointed we are. We are from out of state, visited Pitt early, my kid really liked the place and it was a leading contender. This decision really complicates that. 33 ACT kid, 3.89 weighted GPA at a rigorous private college prep school taking all of the tough courses, etc. Just by comparison, Binghamton offered the kid $13,500 a year for merit-based aid, Miami of Ohio offered $22,000 a year. I have a hard time reconciling all of that, but is what it is.

I guess my question is, based on what I’m reading above, seems like there is a good chance this is all there is coming from Pitt – might I be wrong about that? Hope I am, but seems as though Pitt is going in a different philosophical direction than other state schools when it comes to aid decisions.

@trhbnhgth i don’t think all of the scholarship decisions have been made. so depending on when your kid applied there’s still hope

@hailtopitt1787
Does anyone know if Pitt will take new SAT/ACT scores for financial aid?

@trhbnhgth I’m with imaginoof. I don’t think it’s over.

Pitt web site says:
Notification of Award: Admitted freshman selected to receive an academic scholarship are notified by March 1.
