University of Pittsburgh Class of 2024 Official Discussion Thread

UPITT is one of top public university and ranked top 20 for primary care and Neuroscience program. The only thing is that the pre-med students may be competing with those who got accepted to the Guarantee program. They will have to apply to many other medical schools include the UPITT’s SOM. I believe that our daughters and sons need to form study groups to make it through these large size classes.

Can someone show me a link where I can find their acceptance rates to Medical school? I found that UMichigan has about 50% of those who applied last year.

Indeed, I would like to see the online statistic – 90-100% medical school acceptance rate with every pre-med student that applies to Pitt Medical School getting in (it’s pretty impressive). Perhaps this will help convince my son to go there.
Thanks.

I don’t think those med school stats are accurate. PM @hailtopitt1787 who I believe has shared these stats with students before.

I have a question to raise; my apologies if this was discussed before. My son was accepted to UPitt, and the letter of admission stated he was admitted to the D School of Arts and Sciences as a “prospective Neuroscience major.” I just happened to look into the Accept / Decline process (each school is different) and found that his offer is “Undeclared.” What the heck? Has anyone else encountered this situation? Does anyone have any advice? Frankly this feels deceptive.

@SQBrit Everybody has the same thing and is listed as undeclared in the portal for Dietrich since you don’t have to declare until much later in your college career. They list the proposed major from your app in your acceptance letter to let you know that see it. No deception at all.

DS20 committed to Pitt last week and we paid the deposit. How long does it typically take to get the housing packet so we can pay the housing deposit too?

@vannevka, thank you for the clarification.

@jentam

I believe that based on the data shared with me, 90-100% is an incorrect statistic. The average medical school acceptance at Pitt (2019) had a 3.77 GPA and a 513.8 MCAT (for all med schools, not just UPMC). Even though it isn’t 90-100%, Pitt is amazing because a lot of Pitt undergrads go to their med school, with a higher chance than coming out of another undergrad institution, unless it’s Harvard or Stanford but that’s for another discussion. Notice how I’m not mentioning the actual percentage. This is because it depends on the student. There are Pitt undergrads who went on to UPenn Med School and others go to Drexel (good but not great). So, statistics are misleading. However, Pitt is still one of the best pre-med schools. A student who uses all the resources, studies hard and does not waste time, will be faced with good news when that Medical School application cycle comes around.

Further, Pitt is good because getting into a top medical school is incredibly difficult (1%-3% acceptance rates). Top med schools not only look for people who have 520+ MCAT, 4.7+ GPA but also significant research and passion, which only a few people show, hence the low acceptance rate. Based on the statistic, a Pitt student is in luck to get into UPMC (not guaranteed, but a higher chance) with similar scores but without a great number of publications and world-changing extracurriculars (which is required to get into like Harvard Med). For example, I know someone who got into Harvard Med because he started a clean water initiative in Mexico, where his grandparents live. Med schools like Harvard and Stanford are looking for leaders in their field, not just medicine but in society (in addition to the 99 percentile scores). You most likely don’t need to be that extreme to get into UPMC from Pitt, hence why you are benefited by going here and still receive a phenomenal education.

To all the pre-meds and premed families, knowing this information, please make sure you know that medicine is right for you and you are passionate. Many people take a gap year to show they are passionate because they were “late” in figuring that out. Do not be set on getting into a “Top 10” ranked medical school. They are based on luck (said by a Harvard Med Schol Interviewer himself) and even with 520+ MCAT scores, you are setting yourself up for heartbreaks. So, do the best you can and there plenty of resources are Pitt (eg hospitals and collaboration opportunities for outside-classroom projects) to get into an amazing med school, and possibly even UPMC.

If anyone has any questions, reach out!

Hi- sorry if this is repetitive. My son was accepted to the Computing and Information School. We are OOS from NH - know Pitts is a really good school but frankly were supposed to visit this March and clearly can’t. Can anyone give any specific info about the school who visited? We’ve listened to the virtual stuff but it would be really helpful to get some details from a current student on here or someone who visited? Impressions of the program? Thanks in advance.

@susanb33 and @Itisatruth , my daughter is also deciding between Pitt and Bryn Mawr. Right now, Bryn Mawr is in the lead. . .

@KeystoneDad what is your daughter studying?

I know my daughter’s heart wants Bryn Mawr but Pitt makes much more sense for her major. She is gradually working out her pros and cons.

It is definitely interesting, though. They are VERY different schools!

@Susanb33 , she is interested in physics and math. If she goes to Pitt, she’ll likely focus on physics. If she goes to Bryn Mawr, she’ll likely focus on math. She really like Pitt when we visited, but I think she fell in love with Bryn Mawr. . .

@KeystoneDad our daughters should talk! Alas my daughter is interested in engineering, which of course makes more sense at Pitt. The engineering at BMC is a 4+1 with Penn for a Masters in Engineering. But it is really easy to fall in love with BMC. For strong young women it is a wonderful place to be.

@KeystoneDad If she goes to Bryn Mawr, she could also choose to major (or just take classes) in physics at Haverford, which has an excellent physics department. As you probably know, the two schools act as one for class scheduling and choice of major. My son graduated from Haverford with a Bryn Mawr major in Archeology.

@KeystoneDad @Susanb33 Did you or your daughters participate in any of the accepted student events at Bryn Mawr yesterday? I have to say both the physics prof (who is also the engineering programs liaison) and the chair of the math department were very impressive. Bryn Mawr has a great track record sending graduates to STEM grad programs. (We should probably move this to a Bryn Mawr thread! Or a Bryn Mawr v Pitt thread…)

Hello! In regards to the earlier medical school stats I posted, that was information given by a Pitt medical school committee chair/ FROGS chair who also happened to be my foundations of biology 1 professor. She gave us the information during the first 2-3 weeks of classes so most of us were inclined to believe her without vetting it out (she may have just been telling us this so we didn’t drop her class, who knows?). But one thing I do know for certain is that several of the profs bio majors encounter have written or are writing for the MCAT and have lots of insight for getting into medical school in general. Pitt is a great pre-med school but the classes are tough (Organic Chemistry is a cause for dropping for the program). It’s good preparation for the workload of medical school and it really comes down to how determined your student is to get there. Hopefully, that helps and sorry for any confusion!

Does UPitt still offer a cost analysis worksheet for incoming freshmen? I got 10k in merit scholarships at Pitt but I got 15K from Florida State University, a school that’s ranked the same as Pitt. I want to appeal to the Financial Aid office to match FSU’s scholarship amount, but I’m not sure if I can at all?

@silverfalls31 they supposedly do not have an official process anymore. But I would say all bets are off due to the pandemic and you should still try.

What is your home state?

I was admitted to Pitt in February I decided to go ahead and apply for the African American Alumni Scholarship. Has anyone who also applied to this scholarship heard anything back?

@mommdc Thank you for the information! My D was accepted into 2+4 year PharmD program at Buffalo and Pitt. They both charge the first two years undergraduate tuition. Since we are OFS, Pitt in 6 years will cost us $70,000 more than UBuffalo. But my D likes Pitt better. Do you think Pitt is this much better than UBuffalo at Pharmacy?
