University of Pittsburgh Class of 2024 Official Discussion Thread

@carachel2 my home state is Arizona, so my next choice after Pitt and Florida State is the University of Arizona where they offer me 16,000 a year

@mtemmd Not sure if you got your answer on this yet but my daughter received her room info via email about two weeks after She officially accepted

@Peimom I know that Pitt’s pharmacy program is very good.

I have no direct insight into U Buffalo’s program.

I was just sharing the advice someone else shared with me about the possibility of a student at U Buffalo not being accepted to the pharmacy program when doing pre-pharmacy there.

You might want to get some information from them.

My D wanted the conditional acceptance to pharmacy school.

If she took certain classes and kept a certain GPA and
had a minimumm PCAT score she would have a spot reserved in the pharmacy school.

She had that at Pitt.

PlainwellDad, let your daughter know that if she goes to Pitt, she’ll be in the company of the great-granddaughter of Stuart Niles Rowe, founder of the neurology department at UPMC! My husband and both of my in-laws are alums. Our daughter got a bit of merit aid, and we’re waiting to hear back regarding her Legacy Scholarship application. We’re OOS so every little bit will help! Seriously though, I hope your daughter doesn’t stress too much over her decision. Best of luck!

For those we are attending Pitt…Do we know if Pitt gives AP credits for this year’s AP tests? Are your students taking AP tests?

S who is a SCI commit wanted to take BC, Econ, but not sure about lit, euro and bio. We paid for 6 tests. Our public HS counselor said he needs to let them know by sometime in May if he wants to cancel any tests and get money back.

Hi! Along with my High School Diploma, I will also be graduating with my associate’s degree (64 college credit hours). I know for transfer students, Pitt will accept up to 60 credit hours. Does anyone know how many of my credit hours Pitt will accept?

@mommdc Thank you very much!
I found out more about these two schools. My D prefers Pitt. Do you know how much pharmacy loan Pitt will give to P1 student? We are OOS , so it’s gonna cost her a lot. We hope it’s a good investment.

@twinmom We must missed the chance to apply legacy scholarship…my husband is Pitt alumni too. My Sister- in law works at UPMC as well. Love Pittsburgh!

Huh, got an email from Pitt today saying that my financial aid has been updated. I checked the portal and it looks like they increased my “Panther Pride Merit Award” from 5k/year to 10k/year. Did anyone else get this?

@mathhappy --did they change the Panther Pride award? It’s never been a merit award. It’s all need based.

@carachel2 I have both a “Panther Pride Award” and “Panther Pride Merit Award” listed (in addition to a regular merit award - called the university scholarship - and a “Pitt Success Grant” that I think is need-based). I assume the second is some kind of combined merit/need thing, but I never asked

@mathhappy When did you commit to Pitt? Do you think they will give more merit after committing? That’s great news! Congratulations! I wish my D could get more scholarship.

@Peimom I actually have not committed and, due to other options (with even more generous financial aid), I don’t think I will. I absolutely love Pitt and am very grateful for the aid, but I just don’t think it makes sense for me

@Peimom for P1 and P2 year they should be considered to be undergraduate students (at Pitt) unless they have a bachelor’s degree already, so the $7,500 direct student loan limit should apply. There are health professions loans as well, I think the limit is $5,000.
You should try to get some information from the financial aid office if possible.
Look at the total 6 (or 7 year) cost of each school.
OOS pharmacy tuition at Pitt is $37,000 I believe.

At U Buffalo the number of prerequisite course credits is higher than at Pitt I think, would they be possible to be completed in two years?

We were instate for Pitt and my D had a scholarship for the first four years, so I understand your concerns.

Your D could still do pre-pharmacy at U Buffalo or another instate school in your state and then apply to Pitt and other pharmacy schools.

Pharmacy students could live off campus with roommates to save some money.

@peimom I am an incoming freshman accepted into the guaranteed admission program for pharmacy at Pitt. I do not know a lot about UBuffalo’s program, but I can speak about Pitt’s program. I attended a pharmacy camp at Pitt this summer, so I got a sneak-peak into it. Pitt has one of the best pharmacy schools in the nation, and it is one of the only schools that doesn’t require physics or anatomy as pre-requisites. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! I am obviously not an expert by any means, but I researched the program in great depth and fell in love with it, so I can speak a lot about it. Especially in times of pharmacy saturation, I think it’s beneficial to attend a good pharmacy school like Pitt.

@mommdc @kpharmgirl Thank you both so much for your encouragement! We love Pitt too. My husband went there and he still has family living down there. We know how good Pitt Pharmacy is. We are very proud of her to get in and receives some merit scholarship. The main problem is the total cost. We hope my D can really afford it. Please keep in touch if my D commits to Pitt then you will be classmates.

@mommdc Where did your D live at campus? My husband said not the towers. We’re also afraid that she’s too late to sign up better dorms.

@peimom Pitt does not assign freshman dorms based on when you sign up. All freshman will select their first 3(?) choices and then Pitt does their thing behind the scenes. If you apply to be in an LLC and get in you will be wherever they are housed. You get your dorm assignment during the summer. Towers isn’t so bad. My daughter ended up there and she said it was a lot of fun.

Hi everyone,
So I’m currently deciding between the University of Arizona and the University of Pittsburgh for neuroscience this upcoming fall. I like UPitt because it has more opportunities for premed research, but I would be paying around 22K for tuition(my parents are covering housing and I got a 10K merit scholarship). I also like UofA because it’s close to home and the Mayo Clinic hospital and I get in-state tuition and a 16K scholarship, so I would not be paying anything for my undergrad studies. (I should add that no matter what school I go to, my parents are covering my housing fees and I am covering tuition fees.) I hope to become a psychiatrist in the future, so saving money for med school is something I’m considering now when choosing a school. I like both schools equally and I’m still unable to choose one after much consideration, so if anyone has some advice that would be greatly appreciated!

@silverfalls31 —wait how are you going to cover $22K per year in tuition? Do you have that much saved? I mean you can take the federal student loan of $5,500 freshman year (and I believe max is senior year of close to $7,000) but that still leaves about $15-17K per year you will have to come up with.

Are your parents going to co-sign a loan for you? If so, I wouldn’t do that. Pitt is great but it’s not worth going into debt. You will come away from undergraduate education with close to $80K + in debt/loans. That’s a horrible start from someone who will then need to assume $200,000 or so in medical school debt.

If U of Arizona is close to free for you then do that! Sounds like an amazing opportunity and congrats!
