I should also add that we are out of state and didn’t apply for aid
@Dancer41
Has she used Khan Academy? It will pull her current score/performance from college board and coach on areas that need improvement. Its FREE.
@Dancer41 My D has similar problem with SAT. Did OK, not great, last year, about 100 points higher than your D. Took several times with no meaningful improvement. Studied all summer using a tutor and took August exam. Felt she would surely get score up at least 100 points. Surprise - TERRIBLE curve! Exam was too easy, apparently. Got 7 more questions right, score only went up 20 points. Got 9 more questions right on EBRW, score went up 30 points. Normally that type of raw score improvement would have yielded about twice the points. She would have been done, as she hoped. Now taking October exam and hoping for the best (and a harder exam with better curve), but regardless, she’s done taking the SAT. Completely frustrated and discouraged with the whole process. Really likes Pitt, so fingers still crossed, but I’m tempering her expectations and looking at other options. Can’t believe how competitive it’s gotten over the past few years. Best of luck to your D!
S submitted application on 9/22 via common app. Is he supposed to get an email from Pitt? If so, when should that email arrive?
Thank you
you have to use the pitt mobile portal to check and make sure application is complete. if it is, you wait. you can keep checking it to see if the buttons change to Accept/Decline- that is an unofficial acceptance. My daughter got her letter in the mail within a week after the button change.
as far as applying, she used common app, did not send letters, and did the self-reporting of grades as requested. She did 2 of the 3 optional supplemental essays.
I have to say I am impressed by the caliber of the students getting in on this thread. Pitt is underrated and isn’t playing the game to move up the rankings I guess. And still suffers because of its location- it’s a great city but too many people haven’t figured that out yet.
Thought my daughter might have a good shot at honors and some merit award but after seeing the stats here I am not so sure anymore, which is fine.
FYI, my daughters stats:
SAT 1470, GPA 4.4 weighted, 3 AP’s Junior year (4,4,5) and 3 more currently. Top-rated public school in NJ. Decent but not stellar EC’s- no hook.
Really want to find time for a visit there with her. She has never seen it and isn’t excited about it but I think she could be. My wife and I spent 4 years at U Pitt Med Center (1997-2001) and loved it there.
After getting the email from the University to access the account, what do you do with the username and password that they give you after confirming your identity?
S2019, SAT 1530 (800+730), ACT 35, GPA 3.9+(UW), 4.6+ (W). Math II 800, Physics 780. Played varsity sports. Tutored and volunteered. Did not get into Pitt honors.
Got an acceptance email today, a little more than a week after the letter came.
@FindAGdWay not so fast. Decisions for the honors program come out later this year. I want to say December, but it could have been January
@mathhappy He applied last year. Already in college now. Just wanted to say it was not easy to get into Pitt Honors.
S2019, SAT 1530 (800+730), ACT 35, GPA 3.9+(UW), 4.6+ (W). Math II 800, Physics 780. Played varsity sports. Tutored and volunteered. Did not get into Pitt honors.
FindAGdWay,
Thank you for the reality check.
I hope he got some merit scholarship…
D20 opened the “personalized acceptance video” today – cute!! She was charmed. Not sure when it was sent, she doesn’t always emails in a timely way.
@4011959 Pitt gave him $5000/year. He ended up in another college with a lot more merit money.
I submitted my application couple of weeks back and got accepted. I should have filled in my honors essays at that time but did not since I could apply to Honors College later.
I cannot find a link on the pitt portal to complete that. Does anyone know the process.
@hailtopitt1787 - any advice?
Thanks for your help.
@sammyGA fill out this form
https://oafa.pitt.edu/forms/pitt_honors.php
The buttons just changed for me today and it shows accept/decline. Does this mean I was accepted @hailtopitt1787?
@brown2024 - thanks for the tip will def have her check that out
@yocco1 - thanks sharing your story. Helps me to know she’s not the only one out there that struggles with the testing. This is my second child but a new experience as the target schools are all large universities, my older child had better but not great scores but the focus was on small LACs. Many were test optional and even those that weren’t had very holistic admissions processes so relieved some of the pressure.
@FindAGdWay, was that in-state or OOS?
@Chekov In-state.
