There could be merit awarded to him until March 1.
He could receive some, but it also makes sense to have the frank discussions it sounds like you have been having about finding an affordable school.

Lawrenceville is a super cute little neighborhood near Pitt (5-10 minute drive), less touristy/commercial than Strip District. Butler Street has independent boutiques and fun restaurants. Enjoy! My daughter is a Pitt junior and we love visiting (from MD) and find new things to do every time.
When we began the search process, we stressed to our son the importance of finding a school that is willing to invest in him with the same vigor and enthusiasm that we are planning to invest in the school.
We don’t take it personally if Pitt doesn’t offer any merit awards to us. He has already been accepted to Temple and Drexel and each of those offered enough in merit scholarships to make them financially viable. He really liked both of those schools, so he’ll be happy either way. It’s just frustrating that college is so expensive in the US that scholarships and federal grants are necessary. But that’s a topic for a different forum, lol.
Has anyone received any news about their status for Honors application? Son applied mid-August and was accepted early-September but we still haven’t seen anything about Honors.
Honors decisions are released all at one time, around March 1.
For some reason I remember seeing something about them being released early December but that might have been merit
Admissions and merit are both rolling (although with merit they can keep reconsidering you).
Honors has a fixed application deadline and a single announcement date.
@PeixeGato , I share your frustration and our situation is also the same. Six years ago, when my older daughter applied, we felt that Pitt was so eager to welcome OOS students with high stats with open arms and a lot of love. They tried everything to accommodate the students with high stats and impressive resume. But this year, our experience is vastly different with Pitt during our interactions even though our younger daughter has a superior resume than the elder daughter including perfect GPA and almost perfect SAT. Pitt seems to tell us that their priorities are changed. We have no choice but to accept it and move on to a university that welcomes us and feel wanted.
We know they have shifted some funds to Pell grant students. They still do have OOS merit but it’s harder to get.
We need merit too, so I sympathize. My S18 got a pile of merit but S24 likely will get zero to $5k (at best).
But, IMHO, Pitt has some aspects of a private school for public school prices. I feel better about the cost when I think of it as a cheaper private school.
Agree. I don’t think it’s meant as an insult. All schools treat aid differently. So much depends on your income, your stats, etc. The Ivies offer almost no merit, but they are nearly free for poor-middle class kids. For some people Colgate would be cheaper than a lower tier state school. For other kids, vice versa.
Luckily there are a lot of options and hopefully everyone finds something that can work. For my kids, because of various factors, OOS state schools are cheaper than my in-state options.
What can you do?
Admitted to Detrich School of Arts and Sciences for Political Science and offered guaranteed admission to the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA)! I applied in mid-November, received my initial acceptance in late December, and was just sent the grad school admission offer last week.
I’d be curious to know how many people receive this offer. Still waiting on other decisions, but this made me take a second look (which I’m sure is what AOs intend to happen). Sorry if someone said it earlier, but I think it’s interesting, and I’ve had no other schools send me something like this before.
Let me know if anyone knows anything! Take care!
earlier they asked for mid-semester grades before making a decision. We submitted them this past weekend. How long do you think before we hear from Pitt?
My S24 also received this offer
My OOS S24 also received this. In my opinion it’s nice if you think you might be going that route!
My S24 received the same offer. He’d prefer merit and/or Honors College. lol. Masters programs, in general, are suffering from low enrollment.

It took more than a week for my daughter. She was for mid term grades on 1/12 and received the admission on 1/31. Just the portal was updates but didn’t receive email that the portal was updated.
My daughter received $5k per year 2/1. Her acceptance came October 19 so we had given up hope that she would get anything.

How different is Decision Day visit compared to the regular visit?
We went to decision day in November and didn’t find it very different at all from a regular open house event. The only difference for us is that we were able to attend a session specific to our daughter’s college (College of Business) on the decision day visit and that wasn’t an option during the open house we attended.
