University of Richmond Class of 2028 Official Thread

My S24 was deferred EA, and we were shocked to learn he was admitted RD! He was on the verge of committing somewhere else, and now we have a lot to think about. We really loved Richmond when we toured. Congrats to all the new Spiders!

Daughter was admitted RD after being deferred EA. 4.0 GPA unweighted, 34 ACT, oos, valedictorian, NHS president, Girl Scout, Quiz bowl captain, competitive dancer. No merit aid, but lots of need based. We are still hoping to possibly get a tuition exchange as her father is a college professor at another southern liberal arts college.

Richmond had been her 1st choice but now she has 2 concerns - 1) she really wants to major in computer science but in the group chat she joined, it seems like she is the only person who wants this major. Anyone know anyone in the CS department and happy there? 2) She has no interest in the Greek system and worries she will be socially excluded. Anyone have insight into that? I still think this is a good choice for her, so I hope we can calm her concerns.

I don’t know the on-campus culture there, but based on the website of only 20% and no Greek housing, I would hope one could find more than Greek life.

One possibility is looking into the sorority for women in technical studies - there is a chapter at Richmond. There is a social component while also giving her the potential to meet other STEM majors. It’s also a good idea to get connected with activities of interest - something she enjoyed from high school and/or something new that has a social element. If you are looking for other ideas, I’ve found the parent FB group to be a good resource.

I am from RVA, and there is a lot of social life besides soroities/frats from I can tell. It is a city, so there is a lot to do socially — but again, UR is a little bit of an island sometimes from the outside (dunno what it is like from the inside looking out). I would not be concerned about greek life though!

UR is a leading contender for my son too. He has no interest in Greek Life and we are hoping he can find like minded friends at UR. From everything I have heard through kids who go there, sounds like the social life is not dominated by Greek life and there are many different ways to get involved socially!

Same. No love lost, lots of good options to choose from.

If I’m reading the 2023 Common Data Set data correctly, it seems like if you’re waitlisted you have a pretty good shot of getting admitted - at least last year. 4,098 waitlisted, and only 36 accepted spots on the w/l. Of those 36, 34 were admitted. My son is moving on and not interested in being on the w/l (like the vast majority, apparently!). I see 2 possible conclusions from this: 1) Frivolous applications: kids are applying to SO MANY schools that they in fact have NO interest in attending and 2) Do w/listed students know they won’t get merit and therefore write the school off? Not sure how merit with waitlisted students typically plays out.

My guess would be clerical error in reporting most likely.

I agree it’s an error. I took the below screenshot last night which showed over 2,000 accepting a spot on the waitlist which makes much more sense. The error went away yesterday but has returned today which is strange.

Yes, that makes MUCH more sense and in line with what I would intuitively expect. Weird that the error was corrected and then reverted! Thanks!

Perspective from parent of a current UR freshman female. Spent a lot of time glancing these boards during our college application days and was curious to see if anyone still utilized these boards.

OOS daughter accepted as a Richmond Scholar this time last year. Her application was made without visiting the campus and with only a modest knowledge of what UR had to offfer. Not her 1st choice.

Now closing in on the end of freshman year and can say it was a good choice for her. Obviously getting the Richmond Scholarship played a major role in her final decision

We have been impressed with all that UR offers and our daughter has made friends from all over the globe. The diversity at UR is SIGNIFICANT. Classes are small and our daughter has truly gotten to know all her professors. Academics are rigorous and our daughter routinely speaks of how “smart” everyone is.

Dorms have been fine. Most kids seem to love the dining hall. Student center and gym are top notch. Our daughter also uses the counseling center and has found her clinician to be very helpful

Greek life is NOT pushed hard and although our daughter was originally reluctant to go that route chose to rush after xmas holiday when her roomate suddenly chose to. Very low key….

Overall UR has exceded our daughters expectations. It is a small school and that will certainly not be what everyone prefers. Our daughter came from a small private HS so the idea of seeing familiar faces daily did not affect her.

Richmond as a CITY has been great. Excellent food and we have always enjoyed our trips into visit.

Go SPIDERS.

I love reading this! My daugher will be a freshman in the Fall. She is excited to go to the Experience Richmond Day in April! She loved the campus and the academics offered and also LOVED Carytown as a place to explore off campus!

Does anyone know when will they release financial aid for domestic students? I know some international students already got theirs.

Thank you for this post – we just visited (my daughter is a junior) and the school shot to the top of her list. I will share this with her. We are hoping she gets the Richmond Scholars offer too.

Does anyone know if Richmond has already contacted the potential students they waitlisted and offered admission to certain candidates?

My daughter got a call today with an admission offer. The admissions officer was very nice but asked that my daughter let her know her decision by 5:00 pm tomorrow. She is committed elsewhere to a school that gave her $20k/year in merit scholarship. Richmond has already given all of their merit money out. So, this is fun!

Thank you for the response. It sounds like Richmond is making waiting list decisions real time at the moment. Good luck to your daughter!

Does Richmond send out snail mail acceptance letters? Asking here because my son is a new Spider…and wondering if we will get an actual letter in the mail.
