The general scholarship for non residents makes the tuition the same as resident students. Dept scholarships reduces tuition, but it is about 3k higher than regular non resident tuition–not as low as instate tuition.
If you get both a general scholarship that takes you to instate tuition and a dept one that says it reduces, you get the instate tuition plus the add on funds that come from both. So if you get Superlative general, you pay instate tuition and get $500. If you get a $500 scholarship from a dept that says it gives $500 and also reduces tuition, you still just pay instate tuition bc of the general one you got, but you get both the $500 from dept, and the $500 from the general-superlative. Not sure if im explaining it well, but they will just reduce you max to instate tuition plus added on merit $. Thats been our understanding from attending dept sessions where stacking scholarships were discussed

OK got it! This ia the most info I have gotten and your explanatiin makes perfect sense.

My son recently got waitlisted from the honors program. Is anyone familiar with the honors waitlist, how many people actually get off the waitlist and get accepted?

Same here.

In the parents’ fb group, they are saying they had never heard of a waitlist for honors college before and that there had been 6k applicants for 600 spots.

do many kids get into capstone?

A couple of 2021 news articles stated that there were 1400 freshmen in Capstone.

I don’t remember what thread I was on, but I thought I saw someone say that the Honors College does not accept AP credits. Does anyone know if that is true?

I’ve not heard that, so will be interested to hear from others.
The website says they will accept Cambridge International A Level, AP and IB Credits - Office of Undergraduate Admissions | University of South Carolina

Thank you, hopefully whoever said that was misinformed because that would be a pretty big letdown. We are still not 100% committed (we are still waiting on 8 RD), but the honors college seems like a great opportunity.

Honors does not allow AP classes to count toward Honors requirements. AP classes are accepted at USC but cannot fulfill the hours needed. Ex: AP Lang can fulfill the university requirement of English 101 but would not fulfill the Honors requirement of 3 hours of English. An additional Honors English class would need to be taken.

Ok thanks. Based on the honors college website it says that students have to take 45 credits of “honors” classes but the avg is 54 hours. So the remainder could be non honors classes that my D could still get credit for? I guess we need to see an honors degree plan to see what exactly they would require.

AP classes can be used to fulfill Carolina Core requirements, but not Honors Requirements.

There are a wide variety of honors classes available, some overlap with the Carolina Core and some are “cool classes” that are unique offerings and some may meet the requirements for your major. There is a good search tool here: Courses - My Honors College | University of South Carolina You can also search using the school’s main class search tool to see which classes have honors sections, and thus, smaller class sizes here: Select a Term You can use “SCHC” in the subject field to narrow down the search in the main school tool. Honors sections of general classes start with an “H”, like HO1, H02. You’ll see those sections should have smaller class sizes than the general sections.

Hello! Congrats to all the accepted students and parents. Looking ahead for next year with my junior OOS student. Difficult to read all posts but wondering if anyone could give an estimate of what. 4.1 student OOS is getting for merit ( non honors) likely test optional. Will have 5 AP courses by graduation but currently only has 2. Thank you ahead of time!

This is exactly my daughter and she just got waitlisted

anyone know when merit comes if any? would it have been in the letter?
