University of Tampa

Also waitlisted for Fall 2024 and accepted for Spring 2025. :pensive:

I’ve been thinking about these posts, and all the opportunities that could present themselves to kids who start a semester later - travel, transfer classes, a half gap year (The Leader in Wilderness Education). After so much stress of high school and college applications, a few extra months off might really be good for some kids.

My D is in the same situation as others: waitlisted for Fall24, accepted for Spring25. She has been seduced by +70 degree winter days and palm trees. So UT seems to be leading on her list of schools. Our issue as parents is that we just aren’t impressed with UT outside the weather and palms.

  • March 30 decision day came and nothing back from UT
  • Days later, recvd email that says theyre overwhelmed and theyll let us know at some point
  • About April 10th, i reached out to the admisssions counselor on Ds portal. Asked on the timing of the decision
  • That evening recvd a Welcome to Spring25 email. NO other communications prior.
  • How is it all other schools responded prior to their deadlines?
  • Seems like a lot of Spring25 admits.
  • Where are they all going to be housed?
  • UT had a massive housing debacle years ago. And still do. Will not have D living in a hotel with 20 min walk to campus. Thats ridiculous.
  • Yes Ive read theyre building some housing
  • Its a big IF to assume itll house enough kids and be ready in time.

And to add:

  • all other schools D applied to have sent numerous emails and brochures, etc
  • zero rcvd from UT

Overall I am not impressed at all with UT. Seems overpriced and the school does not present well. They do not have their act together whatsoever. Hoping to hear some positive points that we are overlooking.

TBH I think it depends on how much they want a student. We had none of the issues you described, DS was accepted EA with a lot of merit, making it the least expensive of all his schools (we have declined). They sent much swag, nothing big, but lots in the regular post. That said, we had many of the issues you describe with a different school, his original first choice - deferred from EA, many many portal issues, waitlisted in RD, emails came in with name missing, etc. He’s now been accepted off their waitlist, and what started as his first choice is now “eh”.

UT does have issues with housing. This year they are housing some students in 2 hotels. They have shuttle busses that drop them at the bookstore. I believe housing is first come, so Spring admits have reasons to be concerned.

I also wonder about campus safety, after watching a recent video on X of a very suspect man leaving the ladies room in their main building and walking off campus. There is no security in that administrative building, it’s open to anyone in the city. I imagine dorms and classrooms have key card access, but it worth delving deeper there.

They did a good job with Admitted Students Day. The head of the accounting department gave us incredible advice. He talked about the types of employers in Tampa and the internships. He also said “most college students are lazy” and went on to describe sleeping late, skipping class, etc. We all took that to be a reflection on the students there.

I’ve met many people who absolutely love UT. Think it depends on what one’s looking for in college.

Can I ask for all of you that didn’t get your decision on January 31, around when did you hear back? Any one get in for the fall if they didn’t get the decision when that initial 1/31 wave went out? We are in this position right now and with Tampa being my daughter’s number 1 choice, there is a lot of anxiety.
