University of Tennessee Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

I totally get what you are saying, but I don’t think it a question of putting themselves out there. I think that kids have to do that no matter where they attend if they really want to meet their people and find their place. I have one who loves the idea of a small school - where she can still be very involved, but has smaller class sizes - and I have one who only wants a big school. You just hope that wherever they end up, they are happy and feel connected.

I totally agree with you. My main point was that kids that go to small high schools like my two d’s can find their place at a big school.

This is very encouraging

Admitted instate question? Anyone hear about honors decisions yet? Website says mid December. I read on the thread above one student being notified in their acceptance letter. Anyone else?

If I recall, you were plugging Arkansas on an Auburn thread, too. Can’t recall my exact responses there, but:

Geography matters. NW Arkansas is, for high schoolers from anywhere north or east of Memphis, for all intents and purposes the absolute middle of nowhere. Knoxville is twice as large and within a day’s drive of NYC, on the other hand. It’s on the edge of the Smoky Mountains and a couple hours by car from Atlanta and Nashville, where tons of alums end up. It’s in the East, in other words, whereas Fayetteville’s a couple hours from Oklahoma City or Wichita. That’s a bridge way too far for most 18 year-olds from Boston or Jersey.

Meanwhile, Neyland Stadium’s 50% bigger than Razorback Stadium, and the Vols have had more success in recent years in the sports kids care about. As a lot of the trend toward larger, southern schools is based on access to big time athletics, that’s a differentiator. And since you mentioned rankings, other than the undergrad b-schools, I note that Arkansas is currently at 189 in the (obligatory note about how extremely flawed they are) USNWR ranks. UTK is literally closer in ranking to NYU, BC and Tufts above it than to Arkansas below it. People notice that and think “If Walton’s pulling it up to 189, what about the rest of the university?”

Didn’t mean to make people sensitive. I’m not plugging anything…just mentioning a solid alternative if people want to look beyond with better outcomes. And UTK accepting 23% of OOS kids? Give me a break. Literally three years ago that was at 80%. Rankings don’t matter, now they do? Of course rankings matter. And Walton school of business is higher ranked. That doesn’t detract from Haslam…I’m sure they are very similar. Like I have always said, UTK is a fine school. All SEC schools are fine schools. Fayetteville is sandwiched between Kansas City and Dallas. Wichita and OKC? Telling that you mentioned those cities while ignoring KC and most importantly Dallas. Last I checked at least one of those is a major metropolitan city.

I’m from the northeast and agree that Arkansas seems like it is in the middle of no where. My d wouldn’t even look at Kentucky because it’s too north even through it’s not far from UTK. Maybe that will change in the future.

We’re from Boston area and UNH has a great campus and would be an automatic acceptance for my D but she is only interested in the southern schools. UNH vibe is completely different from UTK. We have visited both. She LOVED UTK. We looked at Syracuse, Cornell and other schools in north and she wasn’t buying it. My d wants warmer climate a sports school, nicer dorms and facilities and of course a great program.

Totally get it. This is why New England Uni’s are struggling with enrollment.

What time are decisions being released tomorrow?

What are her stats and major? Good luck tomorrow!

I’m feeling slightly more hopeful for OOS applicants with the addition of an SAT requirement for in-state auto admits. SLIGHTLY more hopeful…

Last yr, acceptances came bt 4p and 7p at all S24 schools, so they don’t distract students in school and the AO is closed, so they don’t have to handle calls/emails right away… Gives families that evening to digest notifications and not knee-jerk contact AO for variety of reasons. Good luck everyone. Exciting time!

Good luck to all of us out of state folks today! I had a hard time waiting for 6pm notifications for another school last week, that extra hour of waiting until 7pm might just kill me.

If anyone has anything interesting and distracting to share, please do!
