University of Virginia Class of 2028 Official Thread

I do not see the data chart. Is more like Q&A

Please click on ā€œHow many students will get admitted?ā€

It’s called the ā€œCommon Data Set.ā€ Why this name, I have no idea. It’s a must have standardize set of data allowing one to compare many different statistics on colleges their interested in including: all kinds of data on admission statistics including what admissions criteria is important to not important. (This differs by college) I’d at review the important sections (once you get familiar with its structure it’s pretty quick to find the important data) for any college your child is interested in applying, prior to applying.

They also have the 2 prior years posted. Take 2020-21 and 2021-22 (Covid era) data with a grain of salt.

You can find this data for all colleges except Univ of Chicago. Why? I don’t know. Type the above 3 words in your search engine plus the name of the college.

Thanks for this info… very interesting!

Correction on my Jefferson post above. Admissions informed me that Echols designation is through admissions and independent of Jefferson. That not all Jeffersons may receive Echols.

Heading down for the Day On The Lawn tomorrow with the droids. Can’t wait!

We’re here as well. Hoping for a non-rainy day!

How’d you like it? We enjoyed it a lot even though the weather was uneven. It wasn’t as tightly curated as the UMich day, at which tour guides lead us from place to place and handed us off directly along the way. But otoh there was more flexibility for what you could do and explore.

I liked it overall. However, I remain VERY concerned about the McIntire application process. There were over 200 kids on that tour that hope to get into the business school after 1st year- approximately 1/2 of them will be left disappointed. Many stories on reddit of high stat kids getting rejected. If you maintain a 4.0 the first year (taking exactly the courses required) it should result in automatic admission. If that’s not good enough then they need to tell the kids what they expect from them besides the ā€œget involvedā€.

Completed agree! It’s definitely a concern! There are also several majors students have to apply to… no guarantee of acceptance!

I posted this in the Michigan thread, and it is just as relevant to UVA:

Came back in here to congratulate the (few) folks who got in during RD this year and to encourage/support those on WL. I am a Michigan alum.

My sons went to the same Northern Virginia (NOVA) public high school. They have virtually the same GPA (3.9 UW/4.3 W), SATs (1480 v 1500) and APs (9 v 10) and ECs.

S21 was deferred EA, admitted RD at Michigan, and now a happy Wolverine in LSA, Econ major/Ross minor. He was rejected by UVA.

S24 was deferred EA, waitlisted RD by Michigan but admitted EA to UVA. Based on S21 and others’ experience with with similar GPA/test scores at our high school who were rejected by UVA (including legacy, URM and URM+legacy), we didn’t expect S24 to get in. But there you go. S24 is happy to go to UVA, and so is our bank account.

These outcomes were good for our sons, despite the randomness of the process. It was definitely worse this year, and will only get worse next year.

I urge everyone to take a deep breath, think carefully and then move on. If you make it of WL, that’s great, but there’s a big world out there with many great schools. Y’all will be fine at any one of them! Good luck and God Bless!

It will actually be more than half because many self select and opt out of applying…

For better or worse (ask me again in 10-20 years) McIntire isn’t on my kids’ radar at all. But I hear you. What you describe sounds like college admissions in general.

Sent you a DM. Would love your thoughts if you have a moment thanks!

Agree that McIntire admission is a concern for someone who wants to study business. You absolutely have to have a plan B. I think the reason they don’t give you more specifics is it is a holistic review, and they do consider things like first generation, underrepresented minority, gender, etc. in their decision process. That process is clearly represented on their website.

Your numbers also don’t consider the kids who enter as one major and decide they want to apply to the Comm School. That happens with some regularity as well. If you go to UVA as an intended business student, you need to be OK with the fact that you may not get it and end up studying Econ/statistics or some wholly unrelated discipline.

Has anyone gotten their financial aid package yet?

Student Financial Services just started getting FAFSA information from the Dept of Ed two weeks ago. I’ve been giving updates on Fridays on instagram. As of last Thursday, they had about 3700. They are working as quickly as possible despite the bugs and errors.

For those talking about McIntire, I’m going to share some information I already sent to a parent in this thread whose student is interested in a particular field…

Looking at the outcomes data for undergraduate students who work JUST in ā€œinvestment banking,ā€ about 2/3 were in McIntire and about 1/3 were in the College of Arts and Sciences. Some also came from the School of Engineering. Add in related areas like private equity, asset management, etc. and you find about 1/3 of the students coming from McIntire, so the majority majored elsewhere in the University.

There isn’t always a straight line from one major to a field. I think UVA provides an excellent education and many opportunities for jobs and internships regardless of the school in which the student has their major.

If you want to play with the data, it’s here: https://career.virginia.edu/CareerData/StudentOutcomes

just wanted to update you all i think 57 people were offered a spot off of the waitlist today. I only know one from my school but possibly more since I know a LOT of waitlists. Knocking on wood but I think this may be a good sign for significant & early waitlist movement across the board this year…keeping my fingers crossed for other schools, too!

Does anyone have experience with or know who we could contact at UVA about the Year in Wise option? (for waitlisted, in state, arts and sciences kids). I just had a really unsettling phone conversation with one of the deans in the admissions office, who basically didn’t know anything about what would happen to the kids once they transfer from Wise to Charlottesville, and didn’t even know who to connect me with. My kid is seriously considering it but that conversation has us having second thoughts…
