Same. We have not heard of a single NoVa deferred to admitted status update. DC actually only knows one kid who got in EA at all. All the rest were ED from their school. We were advised to ED TO UVA from our school if DC was really serious, but they had other schools they wanted to attend and weren’t willing to miss out on the chance of acceptance.
I know I’ll get booed by this comment but I feel like UVA should adopt UNC-Chapel Hill 18% limit. UNC’s policy is that no more than 18% of the undergraduate student body can be composed of out-of-state students. If UVA is primarily funded by the state of Virginia, then it has an obligation to prioritize admissions for in-state students.
This is why it won’t and shouldn’t happen, the disparity in state funding is enormous.
In terms of state funding, UNC receives significantly more per student than UVA, with UNC receiving around $22,131 in 2013-14 and UVA receiving $9,518. Which has gotten even more skewed since then…
The state contribution is well under 20%.
Does anyone have any info on the nursing program at UVA?
Conflicted. OOS daughter accepted at uva, Baylor, wake forest and trying decide. Daughter has always been academically driven but also loves playing sports and being active. UVA has provided no merit and we do not qualify for financial aid. Other schools have provided merit scholarships.
UVA concern….kee hearing about the challenge of OOS students acclimating with the in state uva students? Is that a real concern at uva? Or just outliers?
Georgia Tech… I heard the same thing for S23. Obviously it depends, but at GT, he found his crew right away.
Now, he isn’t into the frat scene or that… which I won’t stereotype things… but let’s just say S23 crew would have been his crew no matter what. That written, S23 is OOS and zero of his friends are actually from Georgia… it just so happens the high-pots he hangs out with… simply are from OOS.
Would love to hear responses from OOS UVA past families… but I think its a coin flip no matter where one goes!!!
Daughter was an OOS who graduated in 2023 and I was an OOS student who graduated in 1992. There is a significantly larger number of OOS students at UVA than most schools especially public universities (33% are OOS.) It’s not difficult to make friends there are lots of clubs and groups to find like-minded people.
She found her “group” by joining a sorority who is her core friends and roommates in DC now. I chose not to join a fraternity and made connections in the premed community and on the basketball court.
It’s an environment where students are bright, motivated and well rounded…you have to work to excel but that prepares you for the future.
My daughter decided not to go to UNC because she grew up in Chapel Hill and felt it was just an extension of high school. She wanted to challenge herself and after graduating with a 6 figure finance job in DC I would say she accomplished just that.
It seems like Baylor would be the choice if she wants the Baylor experience. Does she want a Christian school? Does she lean conservative? Baylor has come a long way to shifting towards a more moderate approach, but it is not a fit for everyone and they don’t want it to be. And while it’s a great school, it doesn’t have the same level of prestige as either Wake or UVA. That won’t matter though IF she wants the Baylor experience.
Or does she fit the Wake profile better? Wake is much smaller than the other two and more liberal than Baylor—does that work for her? It is also very Greek life oriented, more than the other 2. Does she want that?
How do the majors compare? What is the cost difference?
Anyone got off the UVA Engineering waitlist yet?
My thought is outliers. Our OOS small school has sent 1 or 2 people to UVA for the past few years. All seem to have found their place and love it, and all are very different kids. Some joined Greek life, others became involved in clubs, one was an athlete and found their crew that way. As noted UVA has a high percentage of out-of-state students and there are many ways to meet people.
Did anyone get off the UVA waitlist for college for arts and sciences yet?
Yes. On June 2 but just found out today. Tough decision as my son has now mentally committed to Lehigh.
