Just starting this so we can discuss and stuff as we wait for decisions of March 1-15. Excited about this one. UW is my in state flagship so I better get in!!
Does anyone know if UW flat-out rejects people that applied CS first-choice even if they are qualified to be in their second choice major? Or does UW just reject from CS but accepts to another major?
I think if you are rejected for cs you automatically are reconsidered for next choice
If you are rejected from CS as direct major admit it doesn’t appear you are considered for direct admit to a second major (like engineering). I believe there was one year a student could have engineering as a back up to CS direct but that is no longer the case based on what we’ve been told. Of course if your second major is one that doesn’t do direct admit then you’d be admitted as undeclared and would have to go through process to apply for major (following whatever reqs exist for that major). It’s so confusing so hopefully I got that right. Good luck!
From 2021, but our kid who applied CS/CSE as the primary/backup was accepted undeclared so I think they do consider you.
Just thought I’d share what we learned the past few years with UW decision timing and trends. No guarantees of course, but maybe you can take some hints from it. I have two kids there now, and they absolutely love it btw!
decision timing (best we could tell):
2020: Friday 3/6 after 8pm
2021: Friday 3/12 after 8pm
2022: Thurs 3/3 after 8pm
2023: Thurs 3/9 after 8pm
2024: (best guess) Thurs 3/7 or Fri 3/8 after 8pm
Portals were updated by 8-8:30 pm or so, and emails went out soon after.
My kids thought the majority of students with a 3.9+ (unweighted) and 6+ AP classes (or equivalent) were accepted. UW doesn’t really do the weighted GPA as they do in CA or other states, but they pretty much get to the same place. First-generation college students (neither parent went to college) seemed to be accepted at a higher rate with a lower grade threshold. Acceptance rates have generally trended down overall, as the number of applicants has increased significantly especially since the move to the common app last year (they rec’d ~10,000 more applicants in 2023 vs. 2022).
Best of luck to all as the date approaches!
Thanks for sharing the decision timing! Very useful!
We live in Washington so in state for UW and my son applied for Fall 2024. He is very certain he wants to stay close to home so UW is his best option. I know UW has become incredibly competitive over the past few years but my question is if one is ok with general admission and not targeting CS or Business would UW be considered a safety for an Instate student with a 3.90+GPA and overall good stats? Thanks!
I think so. Not engineering or comp sci can definently be a safety. 60% acceptance rate.

Hey, anyone receiving this error message upon attempting to view application status? " Admission Application Status - Not in System
We did not find a record corresponding to your UW NetID in the UW Student Data Base."
I’m so confused and freaking out rn!! I just logged in yesterday so I don’t know what’s going on
Mine is the same way.
thats so weird
I know. Probably just system updates. They might be switching to a more modern system because the previous one was pretty bearbones.
i really hope so. if this continues to persist until next week i might email admissions or something
Same, but I bet it will be fixed by end of day Monday.
Just a warning on the “safety school” talk. In-state acceptance last year was 51%. Out-of-state 38%. Sounds pretty easy, but it’s deceptive.
We know plenty of kids who didn’t get into UW with a 3.8+, especially if they weren’t loaded up on AP’s. UW clearly uses the holistic review to mold the class how they’d like to see it. Many students with lower grades were accepted, especially first-generation students. It gets complicated I’m sure, but I’d just be careful assuming it’s a slam dunk. 3.9+ (unweighted) and a lot of APs and they s/b pretty solid though.
Saw this in the portal

Feeling little weird
Now, the website database is fixed. Back to usual message that they are evaluating …
Are Senior Mid year grades for UW?
