University of Washington Class of 2028 Official Thread

It is indeed confusing. To be honest, we simply do not know.

UW says that they will not consider waitlisted students for direct admit majors, but anecdotally, some students last year were in fact admitted off the waitlist into direct admit majors.

Also, technically speaking, engineering isn’t “direct to major” (it’s direct to college). So that may also make a difference. We don’t know.

Waitlists for any school are unpredictable, and you shouldn’t rely on her being admitted in any case. She should proceed by choosing a school from those that have admitted her. If admitted from the waitlist, she can reevaluate at that time, based on what she is offered.

I think you just get into pre-X at UW off the waitlist but there are plenty of more qualified people than me here to answer that. I just think it stinks to do so well in high school and be denied by the State flagship school outright to a waitlist.

Direct to Engineering, CS etc… have real world capacity constraints. Where and how you draw the line is above my pay grade on admitting kids there.

At the same time Western, WSU and others are fabulous universities. There are choices to be engineering for sure.

I agree with above on this. Also, some of the confusion on university waitlists almost seems by design. They really want as much flexibility at this stage in the process as possible.

Reply dates for UW admitted students was also pushed back to 6/1 (from 5/1 in prior years). This will likely add additional wait time and pain for those holding out hope on the waitlist.

Thank you all who responded. Yes, she got accepted to Cal poly Pomona, Long beach state and OSU. Those are her top three .

Me neither, it might be alphabetical because the one person I know that has heard back has a name starting with “Aa”. Regardless of how they’re rolling it out hopefully we don’t need to wait till April 15 to hear back.

Could be. I didn’t get in to Honors College and heard yesterday. Apparently, they had over 10,000 applications for 225 spaces in Honors. ETA: I’m early in the alphabet.

Received notification for admittance to honors college today!

Not at this point in the process. As pre-sciences, you would be applying for another major at some time after you enroll at UW.

How does the presciences major work? Can my S24 select any major from Arts and Sciences? Most of the computing majors are capacity constrained. What if all the majors of interest are capacity constrained? Can they select any major from Engineering or will it be considered a college transfer?

Theoretically yes, but capacity constrained majors will have an application process that may be quite competitive and is not guaranteed.

It would be a good idea to also have a backup plan of a major that isn’t capacity constrained.

It would essentially be a college transfer. Here is the process for applying to majors in Engineering. The process is not guaranteed. Current UW non-engineering students | UW College of Engineering

Congratulations! My son got one as well.

Curious if anyone in the thread with children already at UW has impressions or knowledge of the UW Honors program.

We heard on Tuesday … last name ‘A’.

Does anyone know if it is realistic to think a student could graduate a semester early since they will have at least 15, if not more, AP and/or CE classes?

UW is on the quarter system. Fall-Winter-Spring quarters. Feels more like “trimesters” b/c fewer students attend a summer quarter. Typically 15 credits per quarter, 45 credits per year. 180 credits for a bachelor’s degree.

It’s pretty common to graduate in less than 4 years now (if you have a decent feel for your path), with so many of the students who are able to get accepted to these schools, enter colleges with 15-45 quarter credits. Some Master’s programs are only 15 months too, so more students can get a Masters in 4-4.5 years now.

Three years +/- has its pros and cons, but saves some cash which can go towards travel and/or another degree. Also 4th year can be used for a modestly paid internship, with no big rush to get that “career job” right away. Plenty of options and yes it’s realistic.

Here is a really good exercise to do for any school where the student is accepted, if you are wondering about this question:

  1. Look at the 4 year curriculum for the student’s major
  2. Pull up the AP credit list and cross reference. Cross out classes the student will get credit for (from AP or college credit). This is also a good time to double check that college credits map to the courses you want to map them to.
  3. Now figure out if the remaining classes can be theoretically packed into a shorter time period. You might have to look at the course schedule (to see if certain classes are typically offered multiple times a year, or in just one of the terms), and look at prerequisite chains for required classes.
  4. Finally, allow some wiggle room for the student not getting into all the classes they want sometimes, and be sure there’s a bit of extra space for a few electives or wrong turns here and there, etc.

Agreed. Pencil out the plan early and allow some wiggle-room.

One other note on this- many students supplement their university credits with online CC credits now too. Especially in the more constrained undergrad prereq’s. Helps ease the glut in some classes, and the credits seem to transfer over no problem.

When S23 was visiting UW last year, other students told him that this was commonly done, for various reasons:

  • replace classes you couldn’t get into because they were full
  • lower your workload by taking an easier version of the class
  • graduate faster, by getting more credits completed faster
  • better for your GPA to take certain classes at CC, instead of taking notorious “weed out” classes at UW

should i consider going to uw if i got into with pre science and not cs(i have also gotten into uc davis but with my intended major)
