University of Washington Class of 2028 Official Thread

Thank you very much @jefrobertson . This gives us some idea of challenges and opportunities for a transfer. What does FIG mean?

Freshman Interest Group

A few other points on capacity constrained:

  • Clarity that yes it is a risk to come to UW pre-X and try to be admitted if that’s what you want in that capacity major and don’t come to UW if that’s not for you. I get the impression they get a lot of it’s not fair this is all I want once they are at UW. UW did not sugar coat the difficulty of being admitted - particularly to CS or Engineering.

  • Noted that there are plenty of students with careers in those areas outside of the majors. I’m sure the direct to Foster was pro-Foster but surprisingly the interest in Foster later was a little dismissive of the importance of Foster compared to other majors - like Finance to Stats or something.

  • Advisors see lots of students where it was the parent desire to enter into that capacity constrained major and feel like they cannot change and implored group to make sure it is the student wish

Parents and college counselors may not have identical motivations, of course.

Counselors may like to help spread out the student body across all majors and help relieve some of that stress on the more constrained majors (which also tend to be very highly-valued in the workplace). And parents may want to help their kids find something that is both fulfilling and presents many financial opportunities after graduation as well.

Nothing wrong with the potentially differing motivations at all, but worth considering in any advice received.

Here are some of the details for additional items considered for the business school, one of the very competitive and constrained majors. Much of it relates to hardship and diversity. Maybe similar to the general admissions criteria considered at UW, and other competitive schools.

Does anyone have personal experience with the early fall start (College Edge) program? My son finishes high school on May 20th and wouldn’t mind starting college in August instead of waiting until September. Four whole months is a long summer. Besides his summer job ends in early August anyway. Thanks!

I wonder if this document will be updated after the Supreme Court decision. Seems ripe for a legal review.

No, but I’d just let him know the campus is pretty empty until a ~week before classes start, at the end of September. My kids didn’t want to do the early start. The UW school year goes into June, so maybe enjoy the one extra long summer.

He could grab some easy college credits online from the local community college if he gets bored. Sure makes the path easier later.

I think universities are pretty careful how they structure these admission evaluations now. With a focus on equity, first-generation students, and hardship. I just think more transparency on all of it w/b helpful, so state residents at many of the most competitive flagships can decide if they agree it’s the best approach. Not unique to UW at all. Same discussions in the UC schools and elsewhere.

I know several students that participated in this program - both local to the area and out of state. Feedback was similar across all - great way to meet others, get settled in and many of the participants they met remained friends. Never heard anything about the academic part vs a social boost and feeling comfortable on campus prior to the big move in and activities. All were very happy they participated.
