How hard is it to get in CS major? Unweighted GPA 4.0, 10 AP with all 5, in state, no outstanding ECs, any chance?
25% accepted rate
UW CS is very competitive but b/c youâre in-state you have a shot.
Out-of-state, not so much. Low single digit acceptance rates.
It blows my mind that it is easier to get into MIT (~4% AR) than UW for CS OOS (~2% AR)
Well thatâs a whole different group that applies to MIT
SAT 1580 doesnât help, right? Is test score optional or blind?
But both are super highly ranked for CS. Iâd expect high stat CS majors to apply to both.
Itâs test optional, but they will review at 1580 if you sent it in if you were boderline.
A 1580 will likely be seen and help your chances significantly. Those stats should give you a great shot in-state based those students my kids know who were accepted to UW CS the past few years.
The 20-25% CS acceptance rate can be confusing to some though. This is not 20-25% of the general pop. CS applicants certainly lean higher achieving. So, it takes a lot to get in, even in-state.
I thought UW no longer considers SATs as of this yearâŠ
SATs can be reviewed in borderline situations. If you read the policies at many competitive schools, theyâre often very confusing. But itâs also pretty clear theyâre still considered in competitive situations. CS for example.
how competitive is english major?? how hard is admission
English is not capacity impacted, so you just need to be able to get in to the university as a whole.
The odds seem to be starting to lean towards Thurs night I agree, but still worth checking ~8:30pm the next couple nights Iâd think.
A reminder to share the following after the notification, if youâre willing, and want to help out future stressed-out applicants:
- In-state or Out-of-state (OOS)
- UNWEIGHTED GPA (at time of application)
- total # of AP classes taken
- #1 major requested in the application
First generation in-state college students also seem to get preference at UW. If anyone chooses to share that. Feel free to add more, but 1-4 seem to be most relevant.
Does anyone know if UW looks at Cambridge A and AS level classes like AP? Our school was a Cambridge international school and those classes were weighted the same as AP.
While we wait for admission decisions, some useful statistics from the 2023-24 Common Data Set for consumption

Admittance % | 52% | 38% | 45% | 43% |

Do they have the breakdown by majors? I hear itâs ~3% for OOS CS. Is that true?
This is for the university as a whole. Major wise decisions are not part of the Common Data set. Sometimes they are available publicly. And yes, admission % for OOS for CS at UW-Seattle is <5%
