Occasionally schools are a little more transparent and honest with the holistic review process when presenting to their board of regents, but I’m sure the words are still recorded carefully in the meeting minutes. Anyway, I have heard there are WA legislators pushing for more transparency in the process (not just short youtube videos).
These small departments are essentially handing out $120,000 scholarships at their discretion, so I think it’s reasonable for residents to expect that transparency.
They would need to show they have an income to support themselves, with no parental support, I think get their own health insurance, show they moved in state for reasons unrelated to college.
per this link, in 2024, 1,845 of the 8,232 students on the waitlist were offered admission; in 2023, 2,985 of the 4,122 students on the waitlist were offered admission, and in 2022, 8 of the 5,347 students on the waitlist were offered admission. so it can fluctuate greatly but probably around 10-20%. especially if you applied for a competive/capacity constrained major. in that case, your chances decrease substantially.
If you get an acceptance but don’t see a scholarship listed do we assume there isnt one? It says “congrats…and see below for details of your offer” but below is only my son’s application info and the semseter fall semester he will state and his major. Thoughts?
D25, OOS, Accepted CS with P&G Scholarship, 4.0 UW, 16 APs, 1580 SAT, Robotics leadership, a few coding competition awards, several music awards (national level). We love Seattle!
It sounds like the only thing that would be included in your Admission letter is the Purple & Gold scholarship, and only OOS students are eligible for that. Not sure if many (most?) OOS get some amount…they say it’s based on academic performance.
For in-state, it sounds like approx. 600 students will be offered a merit scholarship (they say typical amount =$4,000) and that would be delivered as part of your financial aid offer - I’m hoping those come in the next week or so.
This sounds similar to how WUE works…we’re in WA and my daughter’s admission letter to Oregon State included her WUE scholarship, then the financial aid letter which came later included everything else.
Obviously this is not helpful now. Just curious why is there no UW Spokane or something where acquiring land is not an issue.
Edit: Ignore the comment above. It has been tried before and it does not help. (See UC Merced).
