I think it helps to try to separate these small and political admission departments from the much larger university. They’re really not all that representative. It’s also okay to be completely annoyed with the gatekeepers and the whole process, and still love a school! They do make it tough though.
If you get a spot, take it and run. You shouldn’t ever have to deal with these guys again!

WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) guarantees that for students in many Western states, the tuition cost of attending an out of state school is capped at 150%. Not all schools participate in the program. It will save $18,000 a year for our grandson if he attends the Oregon state school he’s currently committed to,

Hey, current waitlist student here ( in state ). Did anyone else who’s on the waitlist receive an email last Friday about an update to their financial aid offer? It also asked me about my living conditions for next year. If you’re on the waitlist and didn’t get the email, I would still love to know just to see if it could possibly mean anything! Thank you!!
If there’s a student number in the email or on myUW when you log in you’ve likely been admitted. I don’t believe UW assigns a student number unless you have been admitted. The email you received was probably generated by assigning the student number which then starts the processing of financial aid and living conditions impact the cost of aid - that’s all part of the same aid question not two separate issues.

Any news on waitlist movements ? We’re out of state and wanted to know if any OOS canidates got any information
There have been some posts above about waitlist movement, but it seems to be somewhat slow. Small sample sizes, so hard to say for sure of course. Prior years have seen some movement in early June as well. Again, no guarantees at all and it can vary greatly.
I may suggest that some of the confusion around international students and visas at the federal level may have an impact on these waitlists nationally. I suspect some universities may keep their waitlists open longer to fill in spots later in the summer, if needed. This would likely disproportionately help any out-of-state students on waitlists. If a university needs to backfill for the potential of fewer international students (who pay the much higher out-of-state tuition rates) they would likely pull out-of-state US students off of waitlists to attempt to fill those spots at a similar revenue level. A potential system-wide issue, not just UW specific again - but you could see how this may disproportionately impact west coast schools, and the most competitive universities on the east coast as well.
Just something to note, and perhaps worth keeping an eye on in the weeks ahead.
Daughter waitlisted. And still waiting.
In state, Asian,
3.8+ UW. 4.5+ weighted. 12 AP the rest honors, 1490 SAT
Biology.
I’ll say it, the only negative about her application is that she is Asian.
Strange because she got accepted to better out of state schools.

yeah,
I feel for you…
my son (asian, 4.0/4.7) WL for biochem.
non asian kids at his school with similar or inferior stats got in?
our society really needs to go back to meritocracy and away from asian hate. FWIW, he got into UCSB, UCD, UCI, NYU, BU, NEU and other schools so doubt that there was something wrong with his essays or application in general…

I guess we’ll see in the lawsuit vs UW whether there is evidence of Asian discrimination. UW cares a lot less than almost every school about the totality of the app - so anyone with a full and impressive app will get admitted into “better” schools than UW.
If I was trying to view In-State WL or denials I would be focused on these factors UW does seem to care about:
-
CADR classes, UW GPA in those courses and AP/Rigor with those course options and did you take more than minimum in context with AO area rep knowledge of high school
-
5 or so ECs with depth/leadership (I don’t think UW cares at all about a nonprofit, passion project, whatever)
-
Character/diversity essay
-
What you shared in the add’l section of app
-
Where you attended to in-state high school and how many others are applying to UW
-
Male or Female
-
Intended major with alignment to HS transcript/profile
-
Athlete, first gen or historically under-repd
Not much evidence UW evaluates deeper than that. Maybe they consider race or ethnicity but not much external evidence of that. Meritocracy is important but I find people assign factors to UW merit consideration that are not actually things UW finds important. And this often is at the detriment of talented HS students especially at schools with lots of UW in-state apps and those with many HS opportunities and a full robust application.
Stanley Zhong is not a good example of unfair admissions (although his dad certainly thinks he is). If you read the actual lawsuit materials that include his high school transcript, you’ll see that he lacked rigor in comparison to others from his high school. He had a high SAT score, but this is irrelevant to UC (and UW). Discussion starts here (but I think you might have to join the politics forum): https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/race-in-college-applications-faq-discussion-14/3627043/2077
I believe that thread is the only one on this site where discussion of race in college admission is allowed, fyi.

Just got off the waitlist yesterday (6/2/24) around 11 pm
Intended major: biology, got in for pre-sciences
*also wrote a LOCI but not sure if that played a factor
Stats/Background:
Asian male
In-state
3.9 unweighted gpa
11 APs
AP Scholar with Distinction
2 two week community service trips (120 hours of service)
3 years NHS
4 years varsity basketball
Some things that I didn’t put in my application but should have
- really make sure to emphasize how much you want to go to UW in your personal statement and tie it in with your major
- make sure to look at majors and maybe choose a less competitive major like pre-sciences instead of biology
Does anyone know if UW does waitlist waves once a week? or multiple? I feel like I haven’t heard about waitlist movement until today.
It seems like the first movement has started. How many people are getting off? Small amounts? Why is it so quiet? I thought there would be many people getting off like ~1000..
maybe there were so many people already without us knowing. Please share if you get off. We want to know if the first movement is already done.
UW has made it pretty clear they hope to continue to increase the share of what they define as the more in-need groups, they often refer to as URM, or under-represented minorities (non-asian, non-white I believe). The goal is to increase the share of URM, decreasing the share asian/white. They do detailed break-out by race showing their progress in presentations to the UW board of regents, and in other public info as well. It’s clearly a focus, and a closely measured metric in admissions. I’ll be curious how all of this plays out in federal investigations. I have a feeling there won’t be big changes though. It doesn’t appear very difficult to work around the technicalities of the supreme court rulings.
There does seem to be quite a split on if parents/students believe this is the right or wrong approach, but I am convinced we won’t solve it here. It’s certainly playing right into the politics of our time however!
Agree. It may not be federal investigations but the federal purse strings that ultimately change behavior….if change happens
Did anyone else get the email about waitlist from office of admissions today? Do you think it means that they’ve filled up all spots?
We got the email too.
I can’t believe the first wave is already over. Seriously! Do they get off over 1000 people already?
Did you get off from the waitlist? I thought everyone who didn’t get off received this email.
“Thank you, again, for joining the University of Washington freshman waitlist. We understand that the wait has been long, so we are writing you with an update. While we are not able to offer you admission at this time, we plan to keep the waitlist open in case space becomes available. You will be notified no later than August 1.”
Yes got the same email. Did anyone get off the waitlist ?
