University of Washington Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

Grandson did not get the email. Maybe this is hopeful? His application is ranked higher on the wait list?

Waitlist is not ranked. WL is used to fill in gaps in yield projection vs what actually occurred which is largely a variance with OOS students. I think @dawgdad22 already correctly stated that the in-state WL has less movement (apologies if I have my poster wrongly attributed) - they already admitted 40-50% of the applicants and can predict the yield better. The OOS WL will fill in gaps where the yield did not work out in specific OOS demographics and majors. For InState students, fairly or not, UW expects you to go to CC or UWB and apply again to replace those InState who transfer or wash out.

Returning with the goal of helping those applying next year. Be careful of going in the back door majors, if Foster is the goal. I will admit we were asleep on this and applied straight up (but also had the stats to do so). However, I have also learned that this year’s group of standard admits trying to get into Foster was brutal. Many are now navigating staying with whatever major they are in. As you may have seen, IU changing standard admit reqs for Kelly. I would not be surprised to see a similar change for Foster. @jefrobertson pointed out in this thread that for us, UW may have done us a favor by not giving second choice to encourage going elsewhere. I choose to believe that. UW is a fantastic school and for in state, there isn’t a close second choice. And yes many friends are going cc route to transfer in. But there are great schools oos and I encourage you all to apply widely.

Has anyone tried calling the admissions office? I wonder if they would tell us if there’s going to be any more waves?

I still think out-of-state waitlists, especially at west coast schools, could have additional movement this summer because of concerns/challenges international students may be feeling in this cycle. This would make estimating the “melt” (the students who accept an offer and pay the fee, but never show up to campus) more difficult too. A low level of “melt” is built-in to the numbers, but seems like it could be more challenging to estimate this year.

Any in-state movement was likely a trickle, and a mid-summer surge would be a surprise unfortunately.

Another incentive UW may have to keep waitlists open into the summer, is that they don’t allow students offered a spot on a waitlist to appeal until the list closes. So, the longer they keep the waitlist open, the fewer appeals they will likely have to deal with later. It’s natural to get worn out by the whole process and just move on. We’ve seen some success with appeals in prior years, but perhaps less so last year (based on comments on these forums). Again, it’s no guarantee at all, but if UW is your top priority it may still be worth the shot. They outline to process in detail on the admissions website.

Maybe just short of a “favor” as Foster is very stats based so not a real secret on how to get in. But UW’s grading system makes it challenging for most UW students and a really stressful 2 years of worrying about GPA. The “favor” is the practical reality if not admitted SA:

  • 4 classes before you can apply of which 2 count for something generally at UW (Econ/Eng) and 2 might not depending on your major (Math/Acctg). 0-20 credits maybe lost on this effort. GPA in these classes needs around a 3.7. Don’t aggregate to a 3.7 - you really have to take them again.

  • 4 classes before you can be admitted. 19 credits. These mostly count for nothing else at UW other than maybe Econ major if you go that direction and at least 2 Acctg 225 and Mgmt 200 are difficult concepts to get a high grade. Econ backup majors probably want to take Stat 311 over Qmeth 201 but Stat 311 is very difficult to get into in registration.

  • 60 graded completed overall credits and 2 admit cycles - early fall and early spring. 60 credits is obviously intentional with an early Fall cycle to early soph apps. Most entering frosh will have to apply in Spring of Soph year so you are actually 90 credits in progress by the time you apply and 105 if you apply again in Fall Jr year to try again.

  • Now if I don’t get admitted I have to immediately declare a major of which I’ve maybe taken nearly zero classes in prep if its a capacity constrained one and I have 5 quarters to go (about 75 credit) so hard to waste more time having to apply by their cycles. This is why you see a lot of Comm majors out of failed Foster apps - it’s just way easier to start. And when we talk about UW maybe being potentially selective on HS admits to second choice “Econ” majors this is why - it’s not practical in many cases to pivot to Econ. Especially not an Econ BS because of the Calc series. So if i see from your app that you really are a biz major - I can see why UW the business says - you will be happier elsewhere. In a very hurtful, maybe costly and unfair practical way. And the I got into UW hack is unlikely most of these kids get into Foster though that back door.

Did your daughter get off? Or did she receive the email? My daughter is similar stat 3.92/1500, biochem, in state.
I saw only 1 person who claimed to get in from the recent wave. I don’t know if that was real big wave or not.
Please share if you see a lot of people who got off this week.

It was a pretty big wave. Alot of offers were sent, both in and out of state. A lot of my friends got off and a lot of people from reddit said they got off as well. I would assume this to be the last wave maybe because the email is kind of saying that they’ve filled up all their spots but maybe if someone drops they’ll send out an offer or two.

Thank you for letting me know.

Agreed. By favor I meant that since business is having a moment this cycle, the push for my daughter to pursue a business direct admit elsewhere was what was needed. She wanted to go to UW forever. We are season ticket holders blah blah. It’s been further confirmed by family friends who’s students just struggled with SA hence my wish to be sure I hadn’t somehow conveyed in earlier posts that the back door may work, specifically for Foster. (Thank you for your insights here and on IU, much appreciated)

She did not. But several of her classmates got off the waitlist last week.

Any updates on WL?

Haven’t heard anything. Who knows if they’re done with WL

OOS got off WL today for pre-major.

We could be in the final round of the waitlist now. If anyone receives the email indicating the waitlist has been officially closed, please post that here.

any updates?

Anyone knows if the waitlist is done or not
