University of Wisconsin Early Action Fall 2024 Admissions

What do we think the likelihood is of a deferral becoming an acceptance?

Also wondering… DS deferred OOS 4.0w 32 ACT strong essays, EC’s, volunteering, leadership, pt job

If you haven’t seen this:

Applicants who are deferred are neither admitted nor denied upon initial review. Deferred applicants have the potential for success at UW–Madison, however, we would like to review midyear grades prior to making a final decision. Decisions on deferred students will be made by the end of March.

Good luck to all.

First-Year Students: We highly recommend that you self-report your mid-year semester grades. Self-reported grades are the primary factor in the consideration of your admissions review.

What Do You Consider When Reviewing an Applicant Who Has Received a Defer Decision?

The most important thing we consider is your self-reported grades.

Can I Provide Additional Materials for Consideration?

Please do not send any additional documents unless specifically requested, as we are unable to accept them and they will not impact your decision.

So does this mean no LOCI?

I’m not Wisconsin - but if I’m reading this, I’d say no.

Your submitting mid-year grades is your LOCI - how I’d interpret - if I was an impacted family.

Deferred.
OOS public - Asian male
UW 3.57/W 4.3
SAT 1550 (not superscored)
9 APs (3 senior year)/lots of ECs/interesting essays and explanation for poor grades in sophomore year (something difficult happened).

I think the best guide for who gets in after being deferred is the profile of past enrolled classes. That’s the base rate of who is admitted.

If a student is willing/able to wait on a college and has metrics near or above the 75th percentile of typical enrolled classes, I would think the odds of an acceptance are pretty good. The problem is the longer a student has to wait, the less merit aid will be available.

I’ve heard that students on the waitlist who can pay full cost of attendance are more likely to be admitted. This is because the college at that point has exhausted their pool of merit aid.

I could also be completely wrong.

I don’t think students should expect merit in general from UWM.

Per the CDS, last year 464 first year received, 52 of which were athletes.

8,625 enrolled.

No one should expect merit at Wisconsin.

For those who get, they should be very thankful.

For the chart maker or others looking for data

S24 OOS deferred Business - non-GPA high school, 2nd in class, 2 varsity sports (accepted EA at Michigan, North Carolina, and Villanova, and offered merit scholarships at Fordham, Loyola, and Marquette but, sadly, deferred at UW-Madison)

Congratulations to those who were accepted. UW-Madison is amazing. We still hope to get good news at the end of March and to see you in Madison.

And this includes students auditioning for music, dance, etc. I have a kid that attended Madison in part because of one of those scholarships. In general, very few students get merit at Madison.

Everyone should check the scholarship hub in the portal to see if they qualify for anything. Many are very specific for major, background, etc but may requie a separate scholarship application.

I am sorry if I missed it, but does anyone have non-anecdotal data on OOS acceptance rates or deferral/regular decision acceptance rates? I found a newspaper article that reported the OOS rate last year was 18% but the article did not attribute the source. I could find nothing indicating what the odds might be at the end of March.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Seems low. That Michigan’s oos acceptance rate. Wisconsins should be at least a little higher.

Thanks for doing this. OOS DS24 Deferred for CS. 3.82 UW, 1460 SAT, 9 AP’s.

Also, might not be many rejections being reported as people are deflated and/or embarrassed. Honestly, we also received two rejections yesterday and we were busy last night, but I haven’t felt the urgency to go back and post yet for other schools.

Also, I think CC or at least the schools we’ve been following on here are VERY high achievers, which is amazing. A 1460 is supposedly 96th percentile, but feels more like bottom 10% with what a majority of posters are reporting.

Good luck to everyone!!!

That number in the article was incorrect. The article reported something closer to the percent of applicants who enrolled, not the percent of applicants who were accepted. Here’s something I worked up using CDS data. I wasn’t able to confirm every assumption because I couldn’t find the data. However, using the same methodology, I was able to predict U. of Michigan’s numbers. Keep in mind these data are from two years ago:

The numbers being thrown about out here are statistically meaningless to any predictive model for so many reasons.

Consider the common data set and other data from UW, but don’t give credence to anything as unscientific as the ā€œchartsā€ in this thread.

I don’t think anyone has claimed that these charts were scientifically/statistically meaningful. I specifically stated they only represent self-reported data from a highly biased sample. They represent what people have chosen to submit.

The one above with the large ā€œWisconsin, Madisonā€ is based on real CDS data, some basic algebra, and a few small assumptions. It should be reasonably accurate. It however won’t help an individual know whether they will be accepted.

Based on the additional self-reports, I have updated the tables. As @d-one correctly points out, they are not representative of the total applicant pool (just this thread) and I would not use them to guarantee who will be accepted to the University of Wisconsin.
