I agree with the above that it could be one of many factors, but all other things being above average it may be the GPA. The most recent common data set (2022-2023) shows that 82.6% of the incoming class had a GPA of 3.75 or better. I think it’s fair to assume that many of those admitted on the lower end of that group were in-state. GPA is one of 2 factors considered as “very important.”
A 3.78 with high rigor is remarkable, a great achievement, and it portends great future success for the student. Unfortunately in this instance it’s a numbers game with an easier standard applied to Wisconsin kids (as it should be.)
Any recommendations on hotel to stay in during our visit? We would like to be close to the university and And near restaurants and shops, where students would typically go.
That’s very nice of you to say. It’s funny because I put together the tables for my son who was also deferred at Wisconsin and it’s also his first choice. I wanted him to understand that he’s still competitive for admission, but that the admissions process is going to be more of a marathon than a sprint.
Congratulations to your son on his acceptance to Michigan! That’s my son’s second favorite, but he was deferred there as well.
Classmates with lower GPA and less rigor were accepted or deferred. What else could it be that’s in this application and all the rest that have been submitted? I am worried there is a giant flaw.
I hope your son is admitted to Wisconsin and Michigan - and everywhere else that he has applied. Maybe our sons will end up in the same place and be good friends.
And I thank you again for your kindness and your efforts in putting this together. Seeing that other people with great credentials also have been deferred is a (partial) comfort. Again, good luck to your son!
There are two Hilton properties very near campus (walking distance to all). I would download the Hilton app and search that way. One for sure is the Hilton Garden Inn.
You might ask your high school college counselor. Are you from Minnesota? Acceptance rate is lower for MN students. Those classmates who were accepted with lower stats could have indicated an intent to study a less popular major. It’s a numbers game, meaning they are trying to fill seats in a variety of subject areas, while also creating a diverse student body both nationally and internationally. While I don’t think it is yield protection, they might also have thought you would not enroll given your high ACT.
It’s expensive, but the hotel in Union South is awesome. All Wisconsin decorations and you’re right there for all other things Union South has to offer. A bit of a longer walk to the Eastern parts of campus, but worth it IMHO
Last year we stayed at Hotel Indigo, which seemed newer and was reasonably priced.
Does anyone know about accepted student days? Or Orientations? Anything worth attending prior to drop off in late August? My daughter would like to go back but I am not sure if there’s any events specific to incoming freshmen? Thank you!
