I read it this morning (Mom’s recovering from surgery, so I don’t have many opprotunities to do stuff for the time being) and found it very interesting. It sort of shows you that academia (at a top-tier school!) isn’t this pie-in-the-sky thing you never use, as it is often presented.

How would you feel about your son/daughter writing something like that? Is it valid? Is a pointless?

TWoP is one of my favorite websites but I hardly think it qualifies as thesis material. I read most of what she wrote and I think the author could have made her point in about three pages instead of 100-something. And after reading her thesis, she’s taken all the fun out of TWoP for me now!

I would want my kids writing about things like this. It has to do with modern culture and the Internet. IMO students who write about things like this are likely to be sought after in terms of the job market. The student who wrote that thesis probably now is one of the few people in the country who are looking at this new phenomenon. She could get jobs in the marketing field, in advertising, in the media – jobs that older people could not get because middle aged adults don’t value and understand things like TWOP the way that younger folks do.
