Normally I like a little snow for Christmas, but this year I’ve got a project with a house that lost its roof to a fire. There’s no way the tarps and temporary stuff that are up there now will survive a snowfall, so we are happy. I should have a building permit by the end of the day, and they are going to start work next week. I’ve also got a nephew coming down from Boston and SIL up from DC, so obviously good travel weather tomorrow is a plus too.
But it sure doesn’t feel right. My geraniums started blooming again, there’s a blossom on the azalea, and a neighbor’s plum tree is in full bloom.
It’s 72 degrees today in the Outer Banks of NC. I just saw a post with pictures of hundreds of black birds (grackles, maybe?) covering roof tops. Very creepy. The weather is definitely affecting migration. The whales are traveling very close to shore this year too.
I’m enjoying the warm weather (middle Tennessee) for my activities, but I’m watching my bonus dwindle since I work for a company that depends on seasonally appropriate weather! This is killing retail to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Thanks to El Nino, it’s been unseasonably cool here in SoCal. On the bright side, I’ve been able to wear my peacoats that have been largely unused for the past few years.
Normally I love a white Christmas here in Boston, but I still have PBSS (Post Blizzard Stress Syndrome) from last Jan-Feb. so I’m okay with one unseasonably warm Christmas.
I was shopping in REI in Austin today it was in the mid 80’s and the store did not have the AC on. It was hot! I’m not complaining about the weather I’m from FL but at least the retailers in FL have sense enough to turn the AC on. I would have shopped longer and bought more but had to leave because it was too hot!
One winter in So Cal and I couldn’t imagine why people said we’d miss the seasons. In the northeast, the snow is pretty…for a day. And when there’s enough against the house foundation, it seems to insulate. But it can’t beat a walk on the beach. I miss that.
I want to be in Lake Tahoe! Several years ago I was skiing there the week between Christmas and New Years. I was stressing because there was no snow until about December 20th. But then there was a ton, and we had a great time. I don’t know why some of our guests tonight wore winter sweaters. We’ve had our back door open all day in the mid-Atlantic area, and my husband grilled dinner in the rain.
We are having tornado warnings and heavy storms with damage in our area (not in my immediate part of town) and a fatality. We all had to go to our safe places a couple of times.
Sat outside for cocktails this evening, but eventually driven inside by mosquitoes. But that’s not so unusual for an El Niño year in North Texas. We have put up Christmas lights in shorts, and we have put up Christmas lights in parkas and gloves. The remarkable thing (and we are thanking whatever God we thank) is we finally have water!
Like @dragonmom, I’m in North Texas, and it’s really warm. On the one hand, that’s good for my bike riding. It really suffered last year once the cold and wind hit. I basically stopped for several months. So I’m still riding, though not as long and not quite as often.
My D and her SO are visiting. They met in a place where the temps are incredibly frigid. As in REALLY cold. Her BF is also from a state where this time of year is normally really cold and snowy. He actually brought shorts with him “just in case.” Today he was able to wear them, as it was in the upper 70’s today. They spent a good part of the day exploring some cool parts of Dallas in their shorts. Had cocktails and dinner outside, went to a pedestrian shopping/restaurant/bar area. They are in ecstasy! While I am pouting. Usually we can run our fireplace at this time of year. But I have had to run the AC at some point during the day for the past several days.
My brother, on the other hand, lives in Telluride, and he said they are just getting POUNDED with snow. Several feet in the last 48 hours.
Nrds, my D and SIL are in the spa as I write. Loving being out of the west coast snow.
Unfortunately she didn’t think to pack shorts so appropriated a pair of his this afternoon . Whatever works…
But I don’t know anyone on the West Coast who isn’t welcoming the snowpack and the water even if it is causing short-term problems
This is weird weather, supposed to be 75 tomorrow, and warm through the weekend (I have tickets for the Jets/Pats this weekend with my son, supposed to be warm with some showers). We have a flowering tree that can bloom in winter, but usually it is just a few blossoms, but the tree is in full bloom, it is amazing. I hear the cherry blossoms are up in Washington DC as well. The problem is this kind of weather can disrupt things, plants can get confused and it can cause die off if the temperature plummets. It is kind of weird for Christmas, especially since last year was so cold.
It is not really weird, it happens every 7-10 years or so to varying degrees. I am also in North Texas, we were just looking through some photos with the kids the other day. Christmas eve 2009 we got 8-10 inches of snow. No big deal for those of us originally from ‘up north’, but a serious mess for a metro area that cannot see the wisdom in actually obtaining or contracting for snow removal equipment. It was pretty though.
