Hi, I’m a Korean student studying in Korea, who have been admitted to UC Berkeley and the University of Toronto as an international applicant. I would like to major in pharmacology & toxicology, and UofT has offered me a place that I can study pharmacology starting in my second year, whilst UC Berkeley did not (I have been admitted for ‘Biological Science’, and plus, Berkeley does not offer a place in pharmacology for undergraduates). This has left me an obstacle in making a decision between these two universities. For me, my gut feeling was to attend UofT since it provides an opportunity for the students to have an internship experience in the third and fourth year, and also, I would like to live in Canada in future. Any recommendations for me? I’ve been working out with this for a month, but I still could not make a decision. Thank you.
Seems like you prefer the major at Toronto, and it gives you a chance to try out living in Canada.
Also, completing a degree in Canada may be helpful for immigration to Canada.
Both are very good schools with international prestige however…
I’m guessing you want to be a pharmacist in Canada - then University of Toronto is the one. Especially if it allows you to study pharmacology early, and it’s also Canada, so much more advantageous and convenient for your future if you want to live in Canada. However…
UC Berkeley - You’re from Korea. I’m also from Korea, and we both know the reputation of Berkeley in Korea is much higher than the reputation of UofT. If you have any type of hesitation or uncertainty in your future, or you have any thoughts of going back to Korea, go to Berkeley. It will allow you to get a better job.
- Immigration is a HUGE step and will change your life forever. Many do quit and go back to their country of origin. Pharmacy school requires good undergrad grades, and if you have a hard time maintaining grades overseas, it will be much more convenient going to Berkeley to transfer to a Korean University as well.
Can a Korean National easily become a pharmacist in Canada?
I do agree in general with your thinking, though: If you want to make your career in Canada, go with the U of T. If Korea, choose Cal.
Can’t help you there, since I’m in the US and I’m not in pharmacy. That’s something you need to ask somebody more professional or do additional research on. Probably depends greatly on your English/French fluency.
If you want to live in Canada, UofT is the right place for you.
