Update - Eve Carson Case

That’s my wishful thinking too eadad. Whatever it takes to get this solved so the proper people are punished severely and this family can try to heal. And bless the Morehead kids…they are such a tight community and this has to be very hard.

I just can’t imagine either sooz. It just beyond comprehension…hard to wrap the mind around such a thing.

Btw…at [WRAL.com - Breaking News, News, Weather, Video, Traffic and Sports](http://www.wral.com) they have a place for people to submit their pictures of Eve. I love this one:

WRAL website says that in Durham, I think, they are detaining a “person of interest” in this case and have now turned him over to the Chapel Hill police.

Rosedale Avenue; uncomfortably close to Duke’s campus isn’t it?

Description of raid and footage of person of interest:

Person of interest in custody in Carson case!! (WNCN)

Let’s see who gets to him first. The police had better be very careful to treat him within the law so as to not blow this case.

Rosedale-- I’m trying to place it, ldmom. On a map, it might seem like it’s close to Duke’s campus --but I don’t really think it is. I’ll go look. For sure, this is one of those Durham inner-city neighborhoods, though, that you don’t want to be caught driving through after dark. Way too many drive-by shootings in those areas.

Rosedale is truly a sh#teous looking place janie. I just googled a streetview. But it seems relatively close to Duke. My d’s Dukie friend says they have some really nasty neighborhoods around them. Hard for me to tell though since I’m not from the area.

why does it matter where the arrest took place? we know where the crime took place.

I can’t believe that idiot stayed in the area. I am soo glad they caught him. We can all rest a little easier.

sokkermom: Durham is infested with gangs; someone actually made a fairly well-known documentary film of the problem a few years ago. While gangs and gang-related crime are not limited to Durham, they do have the biggest/worst infestation.

With regard to this case, the local media have recently had “gang experts” discussing whether they think Eve’s murder was gang-related (an “inititation rite” of sorts?), or whether it was simply random. Any question about the possible connection to Lauren Burk’s murder would be gang-related as well. One expert said he didn’t think either was gang-related; the other said he thought Eve’s murder did look like a gang killing (an “initiation” killing).

At any rate, it matters (I think) because Durham gangs are a serious, serious problem. Eve’s murder (and Lauren Burk’s) occurred just blocks off a university campus. Duke and UNC are 8 miles apart. If this guy was hanging out/living near the Duke campus, and that’s “where the arrest took place,” then the location is/should be a concern, whether any of us have students there or not.

These campuses don’t have moats around them, unfortunately. I personally want this trash cleaned up. I don’t want them in Durham, and I don’t want them in Chapel Hill. I don’t want them anywhere-- and most definitely not anywhere near university campuses. How about you?

I am very familiar with Durham, janie. (In fact I know someone who lives there as we speak.) I know very well that there are some very high crime areas there. The focus should be on getting the Durham police Department to focus on this.

Without opening any old wounds here, the police spent a lot of resources and time on another case in Durham that really didn’t seem to do anything to address the crime in Durham.

I don’t really understand your point or your post #27 sokkermom. ??? And I don’t know what other case you are speaking of…

I was merely pointing out this crime is of concern to parents and students at UNC and Duke. It is truly hitting close to home for both communities.

I think sometimes this Duke vs. UNC thing is just taken waaaaay too far. Maybe because we are from Texas, but I just do not get the kneejerk reactions it inspires.

Make the reward high enough and they will have their man in a day.

sokkermom: I definitely agree with you. In answer to your question, though, I think it does matter where he was arrested. They will ultimately determine if this guy was part of a Durham gang, or if he’s just another loser working on his own.

As far as I know, the Durham police have their own “gang” unit (maybe even more than one), and they’ve worked steadily over the years to eradicate them. I think things have actually improved somewhat, but it’s an ongoing job- for sure.

Chapel Hill always had this street festival, for decades, called Apple Chill. They canceled that festival a year or so ago, because gangs (with guns) were coming in from Durham (and, yes, they know they were from Durham), and it got too dangerous to continue with it.

I’m sure the Durham police continue to focus on this very real problem, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us should ignore it, or pretend it doesn’t matter. So, in my opinion, it does matter “where he was arrested.”

absolutely janie! As parents, we want to know the steps the University will now take to make sure the UNC campus and the Chapel Hill community remains as safe as possible. It’s a great place and I want to see it stay that way.

He was arrested in Durham…and I just saw footage of him being “escorted” into a building…his face looked significantly similar to the tape we’ve seen in the past couple of days…

I hope they got the right guy (and get anyone else involved)…

CNN just reported that the Durham police have turned this individual over to the Chapel Hill police.

ldmom,

My point was that this is a City of Durham issue that needs to really be addressed by the City. I know that after the murder of the Duke graduate student in January, Duke University police did try to work with the City of Durham to address the issue, and have pledged to continue to do so.

This was posted in January on a Duke newsletter. “Durham, NC – Duke University Police have begun increasing their patrols of apartments and other locations near the campus following a series of recent crimes involving members of the Duke community…”

Unfortunately, there are some jurisdictional issues between the City police and the University police. There may be a fine line here. I am sure that the City Police do not want the University Police dictating their authority. Town and University relationships are not that good, as evidenced by the Duke lacrosse fiasco.

I don’t think that the University Police can delicately insist that all the crime is related to the big bad gangs who live in Town. Yet, the City does needs to protect the “temporary” residents (students) who live at the University. There may be a lot of resentment by the local residents and Police if they think that the Townies are being targeted as criminals.

You see similar crime situations immediately outside of many University campuses. New Haven Connecticut and West Philadelphia have similar gang issues.

It is a tough situation that does need to be addressed.

Sorry, sokkermom, I did not get that from your original post.

But seems to me the cooperation level between the two cities is very high as the Durham police (after doing an excellent job on that raid) turned this suspect over the CHPD immediately. Thank goodness everyone seems to be working together on this.

They are now announcing that Chapel Hill police will soon hold a press conference…

1sokkermom there is an agreement to share jurisdiction between the City of Durham and Duke University. Isn’t it funny how its always something in Durham?
