wral.com has a link for the press conference that is supposed to be coming soon

I went to UNC (class of 83) and I remember that we could walk or bike all the way into Carrboro from Franklin Street. I would bike through Carrboro to my apt on the bypass. It was a long haul, but no one felt particularly unsafe. We’d go to the Cave, there was a pizza place down there, the mill mall, and we loved the barbeque place (can’t remember the name- the one with the pig on top). A few years ago, we were visiting and went to the barbeque and had to park a few blocks a way. I’ve never been so scared in my life walking back to the car after dark. There were dozens of unsavory types on the streets, accosting us, talking trash. My BIL had brought a couple bottles of wine in with us, and he was carrying one out, and it was attracting a lot of attention.

Another night (same visit) we went to 411, not quite as far, parked at around Granville Towers and walked it. Same thing on the way back to the car, except this time there were hundreds (not exaggerating) of people- obviously not students, many gang types, judging from the clothes, and cars cruising by. People were shouting at the cars, people were hanging out of the cars shouting at people, it seemed like we were in the midst of a mini-riot. We had to weave in and out of the people and were very conspicuous; again, we all were kind of scared, including my H and BIL. I’m not sure if this was some kind of special weekend or what. I just remember thinking, “man, this place has changed a lot”. It seemed like once you got to the corner of Spanky’s and TOTH, all the activity stopped, as if there was some kind of invisible barrier.

doubleplay: I ate at 411 about a week ago. I typically eat at other restaurants down in that area, too, and there are lots of them-- always at night-- and haven’t noticed anything like that. Carrboro, on the other hand, has always seemed a little off to me-- though most people seem to love it. Chapel Hill also just built a fairly posh hotel down closer to 411. That area is pretty lively and safe, and I’ve been there frequently–certainly as late as 11 pm, though probably not much later. ??

Maybe there was something going on that weekend- like Apple Chill or something similar (an “underground” apple chill?). Or maybe a local hs had a big game or something. The people ■■■■■■■■ in their cars and on the streets were definitely not UNC students, though.

I haven’t ever noticed that sort of activity after dark either! I wonder if it was Apple Chill, which is no more because it attracted a bad element? Carrboro doesn’t scare me either…it’s kinda got a funky Hippy Hollow with clothes thing going on (eadad will know what I mean) Of course, my perspective on Carrboro is that of Houstonian who grew up in the Valley, soooo…

Btw…janie. I’ve tried to get in at the Franklin since it opened…what does one have to do? Book a year in advance?

Looks like they got him !

Probably. That seems to be the case with the Carolina Inn, anyway.

Agree that doubleplay may have been there during Apple Chill, which was discontinued for that very reason-- basically bringing in a bad element from Durham.

Carrboro doesn’t scare me-- it’s more like crossing the street and, without warning, stepping into 1965. A little weird and disconcerting, but hey-- I can time travel with the best of them . . . so I get used to it. I always dress differently, though, if I know I’m going to Carrboro. ;)

Many college towns or college areas in larger citites have become favorite targets for muggers and other similar bad actors. Madison which never had much trouble downtown had a rash of beatings and muggings last year and it was all done by groups of kids and youbng thugs who did not go to UW and came downtown for that purpose. The cops added more foot and late night patrols and seem to have the problem under control but it was a real shock to read about.

News conference at 4:30; from WRAL via a post by Tyr - apparently there’s a shootout with a second suspect at [Shepherd and Proctor](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps), a few blocks East of where the first suspect was detained.

I hope the cops have good aim.

Just in from WRAL

There were no additional comments on the purprted shootout in connection with the additional suspect.

They have charged the first guy already with first-degree murder, according to the WRAL website:

Thank you God.

Treated at UNC Hospitals? That must have been very difficult for the people there who knew Eve Carson.

Looks like this guy has a record and was arrested as recently as February for breaking/entering and had a court date on March 3 in Wake County (Raleigh)–unless there’s someone else with the same name (unlikely). He should have never been released; I’m sure some court-appointed lawyer and judge greatly regret that now.

In posting the information regarding the incident at Shepherd and Proctor, I should have used the word “standoff” rather than “shootout”.

Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part that, if the suspect actually committed the crime, he would do something to justify shortcutting what would otherwise be a lengthy judicial process.

The other guy, “at large,” is armed and dangerous and-- 17 years old. Unbelievable.

Idmom, during press conference the police chief said he was taken to hospital “for evidence recovery” procedures.

I could say something rude about how thoroughly (and roughly) I hope they looked for evidence…but I won’t.
