It’s been more than 2 weeks since an alumni has been assigned to my portal. Is this not a garantee to get an interview invite?
Has any international student applying RD received an interview invitation?
Since the math isn’t pretty,
2017 Early Decision: 1,210 admitted / 8,000 applicants = 15% acceptance rate
2017 Regular Decision: 2,339 admitted / (59,000 RD - 8,000 ED applicants) = 4.6% acceptance rate
I’d like to remind everyone that you’re all extremely accomplished in getting to this point. And the acceptance percentages are not similar to the lottery. Instead, each application stands on its own. So, don’t be discouraged by the low acceptance rates.
Yea I had mine last week
Did anyone in the group applied RD to Penn Nursing? and did they receive any email in the recent days?
D24 applied ED to Nursing and was deferred to RD. She did not get an email…what did it say? Perhaps one she got earlier?
It says would like to connect with the student over zoom, not an interview just a form of introduction to give an overview of the list of academic offers Penn has. Quite not sure what this means.
hmmm… yeah D24 didn’t get that. But we did fly to Philly in September and she did a campus tour and had a 1 hour meeting with Nursing admissions officer. She also did the alumni “interview” over zoom. Has your child done any other meetings?
I have no idea what that email means, but sounds like a good sign!
My daughter is planning to apply ED to Penn nursing next year. She has toured Penn, but not the nursing school specifically. I’m planning to take her back to do that. She volunteers at a hospital, has done shadows, and has high rigor/grades. I think she may do her CNA this summer. What else has your daughter done? I haven’t seen many other future nurses on here…
My daughter didn’t have a tour of the nursing school just a meeting with nursing admissions. It was in the nursing building and she was in there a LONG time, so I’m not sure what she saw, but I know it wasn’t a proper tour. I’ve read the admissions officer reaches out and has zooms with some applicants, but if you can get there and schedule an appointment I recommend. It was after that meeting my daughter knew UPenn was IT for her.
For Nursing: My daughter has volunteered at our local hospital in the Mom & Baby Unit since Sophomore year. She now is the official “trainer” for all new volunteers in the unit (including adults!). She also does community pop ups with the hospital (blood drives, flu shot clinics). She works at a summer camp which has nothing to do with nursing but because of that she is CPR/First Aid/AED certified for babies-adults. And for her senior final project she’s becoming a Certified Doula (she mentioned in essays since in progress). She has other interests so she didn’t chose to go CNA route instead very active in school (Capt Varsity Basketball, Student Body Treasurer, Editor Yearbook, etc)
Future nurses aren’t really on these boards but we know they’re out there because it’s one of the hardest majors to get into in the country! (like…UCLA has 6600 seats for Freshman and only 40 for nursing). We have learned a lot in this process, feel free to ask and GOOD LUCK!
Thanks for the reply!
I interview for Penn - no worries. They try to match applicants with alums but sometimes alumni are simply too busy or in my case, my account is suspended for one admission cycle because I have a child who is a senior. Starting this year there is no more “grade” on interview reports and is more informational from now on. Good luck!
Thank you for the information. Good luck to your senior!
what do you mean “match applicants with alums…”? you mean you interviewed the students who are intended to study for the similar/same major as you did with Upenn?
Match on the following factors:
- Geographic proximity
- Alumnus availability
- Applicant profile
- Alumnus interest/profile
Some schools use only the first two parameters. Hope this clarifies. Good luck with your application!
Thanks. Per Upen website: " Penn Alumni Conversations
Each year Penn attempts to connect as many applicants as possible with alumni, depending on volunteer availability. We foster these connections to provide an opportunity for you to learn about Penn through an alum’s experience, and for us to learn more about you as an individual.
Things to remember:
- It is our policy that applicants cannot request a conversation with an alum. Please don’t worry if you’re not contacted for this opportunity. Since the availability of our volunteers is limited, we aren’t always able to reach every applicant. Therefore, your application will not be viewed negatively if you aren’t offered a conversation with an alum.
- These conversations are offered to first-year applicants only, this does not include transfer applicants.
- For the 2023-2024 Application, all Alumni Conversations will be held virtually.
- Our alumni aren’t admissions officers, and they will not see any part of your application. They will only receive your name and contact information to contact you directly.
- Student Applications are not pre-screened or sorted. Applicants are matched solely on availability of our alumni volunteers.
- All Penn alumni volunteers receive thorough training to ensure you have a positive experience.
- If you are matched with an alum, we strongly encourage you to make time for the conversation. If you must decline the opportunity, please follow up directly with the alum to let them know that you are declining the offer.
- If you have any concerns about the above information or your conversation with an alum, please contact Penn Admissions. Be sure to follow up directly with the alumni volunteer when appropriate."
Am I good submitting an unofficial PDF mid-year report as “Unofficial High School Transcript”?
A mid year report is something the counselor fills out, a form. How do you have access to it?
We have an unofficial transcript that we ca download, but since the schools sends mid year transcripts, thats not necssary right?
Assignments are given to interviewers so we have no way of knowing whether it was random. I do believe some schools within the ivies are randomly assigned and some are not. Penn alums don’t get to choose who we interview.
That being said, my child had an interview (one of the Ivies) in which the interviewer candidly told him he was the first applicant from a public high school he interviewed and the alum has been interviewing 10-15 applicants every year for the last decade.
you think Penn interview is becoming like Cornell type interview – Non evaluative? Some schools still evaluative – like Harvard although interview is not required…
