URI Class of 2024

Has anyone who applied regular decision received their financial aid information yet? Thx.

Not yet MipperMoo. The merit award came with the acceptance letter. I just noticed on the website that financial aid awards will be released sometime in March. Does anyone know what that could consist of? Is it based on FAFSA? Grants or loans?

I think financial aid is usually based on FASFA. All income/asset based. The merit awards are the only ones separate.

Has anyone visited and checked out the off campus housing? I have heard a lot of upper classmen live off campus
?

@“Jolynne Smyth” We are headed there on 3/28 for accepted students day and plan to take a ride to Narragansett to check it out. Will report back!

Sorry to confuse anyone—it’s on Sunday, 3/29.

I’ll be interested to hear, CTCape! We went up recently for a visit. Beach town is very cute. D did like the school.

@“Jolynne Smyth” Oh good! What stood out to her?

Well
she plays things close to the vest. So wasn’t raving or expounding on any one thing.

I am guessing here but we had a fantastic tour guide who was brimming with enthusiasm and love for URI. The guide talked a lot about ‘community’ and professors helping the students. The presenters at the info session talked a lot about school spirit (cheering at sports events, etc.) which is something D really wants in a school.

It wasn’t huge and it wasn’t insanely far from us (four hour drive away, vs. a full day of air travel to get to the Colorado schools she is considering).

It was an overall nice school and gave off a positive vibe.

@“Jolynne Smyth” That’s great to hear. I think the campus is so pretty, and I was super impressed with the honors program. They also gave enough merit that it comes in at less than UConn, so I’m hoping he can get past his concerns about it being too Greek, etc.

Interesting, CTCape! They downplayed Greek life pretty much during our tour. Said something like only 20 percent of kids participate and it’s not essential. Campus was pretty! Yes, w/merit URI is cheaper than our instate flagship (Rutgers).

Also I met a mom at a B&B we stayed at in Kingston whose daughter goes to URI and loves it.

Hi @“Jolynne Smyth” I know our kids were looking at several of the same schools, so I wanted to update you on our URI developments. DS’s admissions officer connected him with a local student in the business school so he could ask questions in lieu of being able to go to accepted students day. She was delightful–an amazing ambassador for the school–but unfortunately, she confirmed his concerns about greek life.

To clarify, she didn’t say that there was no social life without it. She really just confirmed that a large enough majority of kids who don’t go greek tend to move off campus to beach houses in Narragansett after freshman year. This sounds really fun to me, tbh, but I think ds wants to know that life stays vibrant on campus for all 4 years regardless of what social sphere he ends up in. The comments on Niche seem to support that as well. So he made his decision–it’s Umass Amherst for him for a variety of reasons, the primaary one being that he was approved for a major change into the Isenberg School of Management, which was what he really wanted.

I loved URI, so I hope whoever else reads this doesn’t see it as criticism–just not what my ds wanted. In my heart, I know he would have thrived at URI just as much as I know Umass is a great fit, too. He withdrew from URI yesterday, so hopefully someone on the waiting list will get a spot. Has your daughter made her decision yet?

CTCape- thanks for the update!
Glad your son found a good fit at U Mass! We had that on the list to visit but didn’t make it before everything shut down.

Interesting insights about URI campus life. I’ll be looking for people to talk to (for my D) who are at or who are recent grads of URI (also U Mass & U of Vermont!).

Again - best wishes to your son!

@CTCape The clubs all have parties. So if your kids was in the soccer club or crew they would have fun with their club or organization, my eldest was part of the ballroom dance club which competed at college from Harvard to Yale. I have two sons at URI and neither went Greek. And my second son is planning on staying on campus for four years. Many people do not move down the line (or to Narragansett). My husband and I are both URI alum never moved down the line. Neither son will move down the line. There are apartments around the border of campus that you can rent if you don’t take a URI apartment and simply walk to class. It’s that easy.

@“Jolynne Smyth” My husband and I are both URI alum. My eldest son is a 5th year IEP student studying abroad. I also have a Freshmen at URI. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer. I was Greek. None of our males went Greek. Most students don’t go Greek. Only about 1000 kids out of 14,000. It’s not the 80s anymore.

Many people do not move down the line. I wouldn’t want to because parking is a hassle . They have some newer dorms and are planning for more. One cool one opened in 2020 for upper classmen. That is where my son plans to live. There are also apartments and houses to rent which surround the campus. The best way to have a social life is to join a club. Pick a sport or whatever and then you’ll be with your group.

Here are 12 dorms/apartment complexs for upperclassmen. Brookside is the new one https://web.uri.edu/housing/apply/returning/

Thank you, gearmom, for that helpful and detailed info!

For better or worse my daughter is leaning toward Colorado State instead of the nice east coast schools she got into (U Mass, VT, URI). We are from NJ so there may be a lot of ‘seeking adventure’ aspect to her westward leaning.

@wondering2020 How many Thomas M. Ryan Scholars Program finalists were there, and how many were selected?
