URI Class of 2024

@foodlover865 from what the admissions person said, they wouldn’t be sending anything and that the decision letter in the portal is it. It definitely would be nice to get something in the mail. Not sure if anyone else had a different experience with this?

Yeah, something would be nice. But it looks like that won’t happen. They did state to post a photo of yourself using the URI face filter @universityofri instagram page to let folks know you’re #InAtURI. I guess that is all the accepted students will get. Guess DD will be hopping on RamsZone to buy some branded attire

Has anyone heard about the Thomas M. Ryan scholarship? Where would we look to see if we got it?

Is anyone who applied early action still waiting on admission?

@akobialka we contacted admissions regarding the Thomas M. Ryan Scholarship to see how and when candidates would be notified. It sounds like they will receive an email if they are candidates to compete for it and most likely would receive an email by 1/15, for sure this week. She said she was flagging students with exceptional stats ie 1400 SAT 3.9 or 4.5 gpa and those who have done things during high school most students wouldn’t do i.e. be entrepreneurs, etc.

Has anyone received an email today or possibly earlier this week that you are a candidate to compete for this scholarship?

I received an email today 1-16 saying:
Congratulations again on your acceptance to the University of Rhode Island and being a finalist for the prestigious Alfred J. Verrecchia Scholars Program.

This distinguished scholarship program will cover tuition, fees, room, board, book stipend, Winter J Term travel course, a spot at our Leadership Institute, and many special opportunities for those selected. Your excellent work inside and outside the classroom have been recognized and we invite you to come to campus for a Scholar Day to interview with the selection committee.

The Scholar Day will include a 30-minute interview with the selection committee and a series of events to help you to connect with our greater URI community. Options will include a personal guided experience on campus, attending a class, meeting with your academic college or the Honors program, and lunch in our award-winning dining hall.

@Jordanf Congratulations! Sounds like a great opportunity! Were you accepted as a business major? If you don’t mind - are you OOS? Would you share your stats?

Son received portal update today - Admitted

Congratulations everyone! I got accepted into URI a week ago and just received a letter in the mail today that said I got into their honors program. Whoever else has gotten this, could you please explain it to me a little. I’ve read everything that comes with the honors program and I think it’s a huge step and will look great for medical school. However, could someone please explain to me the project they say were supposed to do for honors program. And also how do classes work, is there only certain honors classes I can take or…? Last thing, I read that honors housing is available for all year levels but for freshmen, it is only available to them if they are undecided in their major. Is that true? Thanks guys!

Congratulations!! Got the letter as well! From what we were told, the project is a faculty guided project of your choice. Sounds like you will determine that with your mentor(s). There is also an additional seminar type class you need to take each year if you plan on doing the full certification…different topics, sounds like they try to mix it up.

Not all classes are offered at the honors level, it depends on the major and semester, and it sounds like they are trying to grow the program. You can take as many or as little as you like (and as are available), and you don’t have to do the full out honors certification with the project if you do not want to. You can just pick and choose classes, and take advantage of the early class selection and other resources that come with the program.

Re. Housing, I believe freshman are housed by major, and honors housing is not an option. Not certain on that though.

My daughter did the honors exploration program in December, and really enjoyed the economics class she got to observe. It was less than 20 students, and they were really engaging with each other.

She likes the flexibility of the program, definitely makes URI a strong contender for her. Good luck!!

My daughter got into URI with some (relatively modest) merit $ and we going to visit. Would anyone care to share what they like about URI and why you are thinking of going?

My daughter looking for mid-to-large sized school with school spirit with a nice campus and strong alumni network. Thinking this might fit the bill - hoping!

My daughter is almost committed to URI. We visited twice once 2 years ago for my son and then last year for my daughter. Both times she loved it and for sure felt like the atmosphere was right for her. I would visit first before making a decision, the campus is medium to large and they have a lot of school spirit!!

@“Jolynne Smyth” My DS was accepted and it’s still on his list for consideration. I found the campus to be really pretty, and it’s not far from the beaches in Narragansett. I would call it suburban. Lots of school spirit, and what seems like a nice honors program. We went to an honors presentation in December and were very impressed.

My son’s biggest sticking point right now is social life. Apparently upperclassmen tend to move off campus and live by the beach, necessitating a car. Alternatively, people choose Greek life, which my DS is not interested in. So he’s basically trying to ascertain what the social life is like for kids who choose to live on campus and not join a frat. For this reason I’m not sure what he will decide, but his other top choices seem to have more variety in this regard, more of an active town around them to venture out into, etc.

Has anyone heard about the full ride Ryan scholarship? I know the admissions office said they would be sending them out a while ago, does anyone know if they did? Just surprised I haven’t seen anything about it on here.

My daughter received a phone call a few weeks ago letting her know she is a finalist for the Ryan Scholarship. She submitted an additional essay and is going in for an interview in February.

Yes, my son still hasn’t seen anything in portal.

Has your son been offered the scholarship? I am just wondering because to be honest, I have no idea how many finalists or scholarships are available. Thanks!

Thanks much for the feedback on URI. Will be visiting soon & I think it’s a good contender for D (at least on paper).

Anyone know when we will be able to sign up for the Welcome Day’s (accepted students day’s) ? My daughter is telling me a lot of people are insisting on going on March 29th so I don’t want it to fill up (I don’t think it can anyways).

@foodlover865 , according to URI’s website, invitations will be sent via an email to the student. I’m not sure if they (URI) select dates or if it’s just a link to register. I have to see if DD received one. We are looking at attending 4/4.
