US College Questions from Canadian Student

FACTS:

 • I am an American-born citizen going to High School in Canada (also a Dual Citizen).
 • I’ll be doing all four high school years in Canada. I want to go to college in the US.
 • Right now my GPA is 3.93. I go to a Private School with no IB, Honors or AP classes, therefore I can’t have a weighted GPA.
 • I want to go to a school like Columbia or UNC Chapel Hill.
 • I have done around 1,000 hours of community service and do lots of extra-circulars

QUESTIONS:

 • Will I be able to apply to these schools as an American going to school “overseas?”
 • Will the inability to have a Weighted GPA negatively affect my chances? If so, any solutions?
 • What do you think my chances are of getting in a school like Columbia or UNC Chapel Hill?

Thanks in advance!

Yes
No
Can’t say without more info. Coumbia would definitely be the harder of the of the two.

Are you looking for financial aid?

How can I highlight my accomplishments in a college application? I’ve taken a look at the Common App. Is the best way simply the essay? If so, do they really read them?

And yes, financial aid would be helpful.
Thanks for your help!

Please remove the link (I have seen it). This is an anonymous forum and we don’t want people to know who you are…

It’s been removed. Sorry about that - new here…

You are ok. It is for your own privacy that you do not want to give out info that lets people know who you are.

Sounds like you are a 10th grader who is deep into journalism. As an American citizen you will have access to all of the financial aid available if you meet the need requirements at different schools.

I assume you are a good writer. If we start with that premise, a lot of college application work is good writing skills. This will take you a long way in the application process. Commonapp only has 2 essays and they expect to change topics starting this coming year. You will no longer have a choice that says your own topic.

What you should try to do is open an account in commonapp (state that you are not applying this year) and pull the colleges you want to apply to into your college list and review the supplements. The college supplements have more essays and you should think of these topics since they dont change too often.

The FA is dependent mainly on your parental income and assets. So only they would know if you would qualify.

Don’t worry, weighed GPA’s aren’t very common in Canada and the U.S universities know that, and will take it into account. No AP or IB courses are needed, but I’d recommend self studying for some to show your commitment (But don’t go overboard!).
