The lesser UCs are always highly overrated IMO. UC Santa Barbara isn’t substantially better than UT-Austin. If anything it’s probably worse.

^ I agree.

Sorry Johnny Utah, US News thinks otherwise.

Public schools get bashed on by US News and Report year to year. I wish US News and World Report took into to account how schools like Duke have their students studying only 10 hours or how 2/3s of all the grades Brown gives out are As. PRIVATE EDUCATION IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER THAN PUBLIC…best High School in the nation is public after all…AND IN VIRGINIA.

“Columbia – too high
Stanford, Caltech and IT – too low
Notre Dame, Emory, Vanderbilt and WashingtonU – too high
Berkeley – too low
Wake Forest – too high”

How much higher should Stanford be ranked?
Caltech’s engineering is not even as good as UCBerkeley’s. So, it’s too high, not too low.
If WashU is too high, then Northwestern is worse.
Emory, Vanderbilt, and NotreDame are top 20 schools. So, they are ranked correctly.
UChicago is supposed to be the best in Midwest.

I think we can all agree that this year’s rankings were the most anticipated and most nerve-wracking.

Do we know that the rankings posted here are legit?

Can someone post 50-75?

No. Not at all.

Stanford should be #4 at least. I even think it should be #2, should only be behind Harvard. But then again, this ranking is NOT a ranking for ACADEMIC QUALITY, but a ranking for COLLEGE DESIRABILITY or whatever…

^ Also: If you want to see a ranking of ACADEMIC QUALITY by FIELD/SUBJECT, the U.S. News Graduate School Rankings are better. That’s where the publics really shine.

^ Yes exactly. How can schools like Michigan, for example, with almost every major field offerig is ranked in the top 10 but is ranked almost outside of the top 30 overall - if this is at all a ranking for ACADEMIC QUALITY.

Stanford pawns YP in almost all major fields. But it’s only ranked #5 and is even sharing the same spot with another East Coast school. How can this be a ranking for academic quality? There’s really something wrong with USNews ranking. It’s either the subject ranking is flawed or this one.

Princeton agrees with the rankings proposed by someone here apparantly

[Princeton drops behind Harvard in U.S. News rankings - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2010/08/16/26201/)

RML: I agree completely. This is not a ranking that accurately measures academic quality.

LACs someone? Please don’t make me have to go and contribute $4.99 or whatever it is to USNWR at the nearest borders…

Please post 50-75

Someone said that people who go to Duke work only 10 hours a week. As someone who goes to Duke (majors=PoliSci and English with a certificate in Journalism), I wish that was true (probably work more like 20 hours a week study-wise outside of class).

As for the rankings, I never really cared much for 'em, but I’m glad to see Duke climbed up a spot to number 9. When we dropped to 10 last year I thought we might drop out of the top 10.

As for the legitimacy of these rankings…meh. Go to whatever school you fit in best with!

P.S.: MIT and CalTech got screwed.

Illinois must have reported the money they THOUGHT they were getting from the state and not the actual amount. Perhaps next year this will show up.

I think he is still ‘working on it’…
Our best bet is to wait for another ~4 hours for the official online version…

I thought that UIUC would slip after last year’s admission scandal…
Ahead of Wisky…?! I think NOT!!

People need to give Northwestern a break because it’s in the Big Ten, that doesn’t discredit the academic aspect of the school. Is it that strange that there could be a Stanford/Duke of the Midwest?

Being in the Big Ten is icing on the cake in terms of the total package. You get high quality results in the classroom and REAL athletic competition on the field. Sorry Ivy League, but NU actually can compete with the top schools in the nation academically and athletically. The school won’t choose which aspect to puruse–instead it will excel at both and then some.
