Us news rankings 2011

^ Do you legitimately believe that Northwestern should be ranked six spots above Cornell? I’m not saying that one is better than the other but seriously…

Yeah, I do. I’m pretty sure NU doesn’t have a net that guards people from committing suicide over Lake Michigan. I think that’s part of the new scoring system.

Just because you’re not in the Ivy League doesn’t mean you can’t be ahead of an Ivy League school. Similarly, being in the Ivy League doesn’t entitle you to any handicap number of spots ahead of someone else.

Northwestern sucks in sports though…I wouldn’t say “excel”

^ I do. One of the girls from my school who just graduated from Cornell couldn’t read until 3rd grade. It’s a joke where I come from.

People are discrediting Northwestern for being in the Big Ten? Why? I’ve never heard that. Considering UChicago is in the Big Ten also, I don’t really understand that criticism. (EDIT): Oh, I see, people are mad because its ahead of Cornell. I don’t think that’s all that ridiculous. They seem like similar schools with similar student bodies and resources.

I think the problem for MIT and Caltech is just that they’re thought of as the best schools in the country for math and science fields, whereas they’re not as oriented towards the Liberal Arts as other schools. I personally hate the US News and World Report rankings, I think they’re manipulated to generate more sold magazines and site views. But I can’t find a whole lot of fault with them this year, at least in the Top 25.

^ Wow you’re completely misinformed. Uchicago is not even close to being in the big ten ahaha

^That’s just low. Cornell has had a lower than average suicide rate over the last couple of years.

" I do. One of the girls from my school who just graduated from Cornell couldn’t read until 3rd grade. It’s a joke where I come from."

And what does that have to do with anything. Lots of people have had issues at early ages. That doesnt prevent them from being smart in the future if they put their minds to it.

“Wow you’re completely misinformed. Uchicago is not even close to being in the big ten ahaha”

Newbie ;p

Chicago maintains ties to the Big 10 through the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, but they don’t compete athletically in the conference

wahoo go RML!

Only disagree with your placement of WashU.

Awesome… but where’s they’re team? What’s their football record? oh yeah… that’s right.

That is low, but when you had 3 suicides in a 30 day period or something like that, there’s something wrong with the school or the students there, either way… how does that make it deserve a higher spot in the “best colleges in america”. If this were a competition of the best schools to commit suicide, then maybe that would be valid. I’m not trying to be low, these are pretty much facts.

“Considering Chicago is in the Big Ten also, I don’t really understand that criticism.”

Yeah, and they looked really good the last time they participated in an athletic event. Makes you wish they’d bring those leather helmets back.

Of course, we all know there is more than football in the Big Ten. I try to TIVO the faculty meetings and the banquets of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. The action is fascinating, especially when they start debating which school defines the term intellectualism the best.

haha right on xiggi, there’s definitely more than just football. The big ten is a great sports conference which is going to be supplemented/boosted by Nebraska’s entrance. Just because the big ten is full of other schools that aren’t in the top 20, doesn’t discredit NU. We can’t all ride on the coat tails of the phrase “ivy league”.

Northwestern can excel at both–that’s fine. But there’s a reason the Ivies don’t give out athletic scholarships; their focus is on academics. So it’s not unreasonable to bash a school that doesn’t wholeheartedly emphasize the academic side, especially when the topic is a list ranking academic prestige.

Sorry, but I think it is terrible to comment on the suicide rate. It’s just inappropriate.

Lac’s out?

It seems like not many people care to even post the LAC ranking despite of being asked many times.

I’m not saying that suicide only happens at Cornell because obviously it doesn’t. I just had a personal experience with someone at Cornell who I was going to potentially room with this year post-college. Turns out he committed suicide and then I read about how it was such a huge problem. So that’s what immediately comes to mind when I think of Cornell versus another school.

it’s definitely a pertinent fact in terms of searching for colleges. you can’t deny that.

I guess that says something.

I know someone at Cornell who says he likes it except for the months of Nov., Dec., Jan., and Feb., which he says are completely unbearable because everyone is studying so much and so tense due to the cold.

Other than that, I think it is a great school.
