Has anyone here applied to schools in both the US and the UK? I’m having trouble deciding where to go . . .

I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place: Lafayette or Uni Reading.

Here’s my plus side to Lafayette: I can pursue both Theatre AND History (but there’s no Italian major/minor). Plus side to Reading: I’m in for Theatre BUT there is the possibility of changing my course, or adding a course for a dual degree (History and Italian or Theatre and Italian).

Did anyone here make this kind of decision? Not just between two countries, but perhaps between two completely different locations? I know my final decision will be up to me, but I want to get some ideas on how to make a good final decision!

Where do you want to work after you graduate?

Would you need a student visa in either country? How difficult would it be for you to get a permanent working visa in that country? (Hint: in the US it would be extremely difficult to find an employer who would be able to get you an H1B working visa with any of those majors.)

Is there a significant difference in cost?

@happymomof1: Thanks for these questions!

I won’t need a student visa to Lafayette (I live ten minutes away!) However, I would need one for Uni Reading. I plan on moving out of the United States; as of this moment I’m not sure whether I would move back to Singapore or into Europe. I would like to teach history at an IB school or at a university.

The cost difference is huge - but: I have a full scholarship to Lafayette already; I’m nominated for a full scholarship to Reading (dependent on my IB exam grades), so I won’t know until July 6th.

On the math end, try running your financials through this: [FinAid | Calculators | Advanced Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid) You will have to adjust it because you are looking at two completely different financing systems, but it will give you somewhere to start.

Here is a thread started by another student who is facing some of the same issues as you. Maybe if you PM the author, you can help each other out! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1125719-bryn-mawr-vs-uncch-vs-british-school.html

It looks to me like you will need to accept Lafayette for now, and treat Reading as though it were a wait-list situation. If you do receive definite admissions there, and are awarded the scholarship, you can decide whether you like it better than Lafayette.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and the link to the other thread! I’m definitely depositing at Lafayette; I never thought to look at Reading as a wait-list situation though! Thanks again :)
