USA Biology Olympiad 2006

And biology charades and biology taboo and a Neil Campbell look-alike contest.

And plants. Always plants.

or we could play a nice game of pickup ultimate frisbee ;)

im dizzy memorizing vertebrates/invertebrates.

Who hates ecology?

Umm… everyone?

Ecology is interesting to some point.

I find it not applicable to the real world. Seems like I share that opinion with everyone here. But it is interesting, but useless.

How does the Raven 7th Edition Biology textbook differ from the Campbell 7th edition? Aren’t they both general biology textbook and having one should be sufficient?

In preparing for IBO, I’m only using Campbell and the 4 USABO recommended textbooks for biochemistry, cellular biology, plant biology and genetics, so just curious whether I should get Raven as well.

Campbell ought to be enough. It’s a bit weak in some areas (plants, mostly), but overall is a quality book. I’ve not seen Raven, but I doubt it could be better than Campbell. Especially since you have those other books, I’d not worry about Raven.

Canadian team is already selected? Damn, we really get the shaft here.

Wow Chancellor_Phoenix, did you qualify for IBO? What grade are you in, and how long do you study each day?

He’s Canadian, man. You guys still selling tickets to IBO?

What’s that supposed to mean? :-P

Hahhahhahahahaha. Nice one purge. If they are, make sure to get one for me.

Chancellor, the Canadian team has a bad habit of auctioning off their extra IBO spots if they don’t have enough money to pay for a whole team to go. Not that it has anything to do with you, though… that was just when they were getting started a few years ago.

No clue. We’ve only been in it for three years. Only 3 people went the first year, while we had 4 people the second year. This is our third year.

Gold and silver first year. Four bronze second year.

I haven’t paid a single cent… training camp or IBO and I don’t attend to.

Yeah, it was the first year they did it. Their third team spot was sold, and it really ****ed off a bunch of IBO higher-ups.

sorry guys for not responding to all of your PMs. AP testing got in the way. and my inbox filled up too. but anyway i have uploaded the pdf of the qualifiers.

enjoy.

Torrey Pines, Holmdel, Winsor, Stuyvesant…

Where’s TJ, Kay? :)

Hello everyone,

I’ve a few questions I’d like to ask those who’ve done USABO in the past:

1) Is this the first time they have a statistics “requirement?”
2) How important are the lectures in terms of the final exams?
3) Was there more critical thinking involved (as there was on this year’s semi exam) or was it more brute memorization?

Thanks a lot,
planet

Guys I just saw this thread today, and checked out the USABO website. On the sample open test (the one they had from 2003), I got 30 out of the 35 questions right.
Is this a good score or do you need to get all of them right to move on? And also how do you go about taking this exam?(thru school or some other testing center)

PS:I am just a honors biology student also preping for Sat 2 bio. I haven’t taken AP bio yet but know a lot of the material.
